Minister of Labor, in the course of his address to the member of the city council and representatives of various civie bodies at a luncheon accorded him by the former body in the Empress Hotel yesterday. In his address Mr, Heenan took occasion to remark upon the pow- er of newspaper articles for good or fr ill, He instanced the pos- sible effect upon the uninformed laymen of an article which stated that the Government had given a tract of timber land worth some $3,000,000 to some individual or company, As a matter of fact, he said, the overhead in developing that tract, before 1t could be worth a single! dollar, would be far too great to he practical so far as the Government was concerned, There- fore, the Government should not have been accused of giving mil- lions 'of dollars' worth of timber and land away, "I have often wondered if it is to the interests of Canada to be able to pick up newspapers and read such articles. Because of such propaganda the progress of the country is retarded rather than as- sisted, We should develop our resources for the people when ft is possible, but I can see the wis- dom of our resources being tied up hecause the people are not ready for their development. "The other thought which I would I would leave with you is that as we expand we should not forget those greatest investors in any industry, the working men and women, and see that they get the square deal which they deserve," concluded the Minister of Labor, ORDER EXPULSION ~ OF HAROLD HORAN Anglo-American Journalists in Paris Take Action on Naval Accord Steal Paris, Oct, 11--Harold J. T. Horan, correspondent in Paris for the Hearst newspapers, recently questioned by the French Government as to his part in the-publication in America of cer- tain documents relating to the Anglo- French naval pact, was expelled from the Anglo-American Press Associa- tion, the organization of foreign cor- respondents here, today, His _expul- sion came after an investigation by the association, . Horan, meanwhile, had left France, and was last reported to have been in Brussels, Belgium. His departure was unknown to either his colleagues or friends, Reports here are to the cfiect that Horan had given an inaccurate ver- sion of his part in the document scan- dal and that he had misled the press associations as well as French offi- cials, Negotiated Purchase It was asserted today that instead of being a mere transmitting agent for the documents in question, as he said he had been, he actually nego- tiated the purchase of them. In a paper which he signed several days ago, Horan is said to have confessed this and to have given the names of three persons implicated in the deal. No official confirmation of this is obtainable at the moment, but a sub- committee of the association which had an interview with Alexis Leger, chief secretary of M. Briand, the Foreign Minister, were so impressed he made that a special meeting of the executive committee of the associa- tion, called immediately afterward, at once ordered Horan's expulsion, According to the latest version of the incident, Horan, after getting ion of the doc ts, showed them to his employer. William Ran- dolph Hearst who ordered them cab- led to America, Three thousand dol- lars was the price paid for the docu- ments, it is said. 3 The press association, previous to the revelations had protested action by the French Government ordering Horan's expulsion from the country. SYNOD IS SOLID AGAINST DIVORCE Resolution Protesting On- tario Court Left to Council After Warm Debate North Bay, Oct. 12--"The church of England in Canada knows no divorce, SaLNet Suction divorce, ad cannot marry divorce rsons, - clared Bishop Roper Tg Ottawa, at the Provincial Synod, when in the dying hours of the session Canon Ferg and Archdeacon Dougherty asked the Synod to pass a resolu- tion protesting ag:in-t the setting up of a divorce court in Ontario. Chancellor Gisborne, for a number of years parliamentary counsel, who admitted a wide knowledge on the subject as it appears in governmental and senatorial circles, and who de- clared himself as the strongest anti- divorce man in the house, submitted a resolution referring the matter to the general council, Col. Wigle sec- onded this. Against New Court Canon Ferguson declared that he believed the mind of the Synod should be heard as to whether the proposed Ontario divorce court would be a good or bad thing, adding that he personally believed it would be in- creasing facilities , for divorce, and therefore not in the interests of the community. He read a letter from a senator and former minister of the crown, who said, "I am square-toed against divorce, under any condition, and that is why I oppose all legislation that looks with approval on the dissolution entirely of the marriage. I cannot get away from the sound pronounce- ment which is made with all rever- ence at every marriage ceremony, 'whom forever God hath joined to- gether let no man put asunder.' It is my firm belief that a court in this province would facilitate divorce. One argument in favor of a divorce court is that the court could adjust ali- mony, etc, really making the whole proceedings more attractive. Un- doubtedly if a court in Ontario were empowered to grant divorce, it would shortly follow the lead of some other Jravitces in enlarging the grounds or divorce. "If there were no divorce, mar- riage contracts would be entered into with greater caution. It is a fact that at least 85 per cent of the applica- tions for divorce are from parties looking for relief from the old vows in order to repeat the vows to some one else. "It is only off with the old, but on with the new, making marriage a comparative joke. Under present law, separation is provided where it is impossible for people to live together. HAMILTON PIGS BEING PAINTED 'Hamilton, Oct. 12--If Hamilton- ians taste coal oil with their roast pork they must blame Inspector Berlinghoff, of the S.P.C.A. for he ordered that hogs be painted with the liquid to stop them from fight- The officer states that strange porkers.are about as friendly as wildcats and when shipments are gathered in local packing plants a rough and tumble results and the animals suffer, Slashed bodies, torn ears and other injuries are not uncommon and the packer and the public suffer through bruised meat. By the smell the pigs detect strangers, and the coal oil liber- ally applied to the backs of the ani- mals with a sponge will cause the scent to disappear, and the fighting spirit thus departs, he said.
