Approximately 50 houses, costing $150,000 are being built south of the C. P, R. tracks and within the city limits this year, while roughly $125,000 is being spent in factory extensions, school extensions, stores and other strue- tures in this area. Keeping the Pace Residents of the sections of wards three, four and five, lying south of the C P.R,, have just rea- son to be proud of the way In which they are keeping pace with Oshawa's cxpansion, Recogn:tion of this growth has been made in an af- ficial way, too, this year, for the city council has paid increasing at- tention to the requests from this corner of the city for pavements and sidewalks, sewers and the Board of Water Commissioners has seen that worthy petitions for con- nection with city water facilities have not gone unanswered. College Hill The College Hill district, reach- ed most easily by Mill street and centering about Mill street, Cu- bert street and College avenue, has led in housebuilding activity hoth the largest number and the highest valuation in houses being concen- trated in this district during the past few months, But every street in South Oshawa has heard the sound of the hammer and the chug of the cement mixer as dwellings have rapidly raised their roofs above the ground and the citizens have loked on the world with pride of achievement, New Factory Industrial, commercial and other | building has been active, with the W, E, Phillips Company Limited, taking the lead. They have added an extension to their picture mould- ing department, and are now en- gaged in erecting the Duplate Saf- ety Glass factory, foundations for which are in, These two buildings will aggregate $50,000 to $75,000, New Ruildings An oil storage warehouse and tanks, costing about $8,000, were PARKER'S Cleaners and Dyers CMCOE ST. SCOUT! It Isn't New-It Only Looks So! N | Phones 788.789 completed early in the summer by the Cities Service Oil Company at Court and Barrie streets. Parker's Dye Works have mover into the old Hart Dairy building on Simcoe street south, after spending about $5,000 in remodelling it and in- stalling mew machinery, and Ed- ward McDonald has completed the rection of a $3,000 store and dwelling at 482 Cubert street. Mike Mazur is now erecting an $8,000 store and apartment block om Al- bert street, and Willlam Kurela has built a $3,600 store at 168 Conant street, School Addition Indications that the Board of Education is vitally aware of the development of this part of Osh- awa is seen in the fact that, after the extensions made to both Cedar- dale and Simcoe street south schools last year, they have this year spent over $30,000 in making a four- room addition to the Ritson Road School. Cedardale school was also completely redecorated in the inter- for during the summer vacation, Comfy Homes Most of the homes being built in South Oshawa are constructed es- pecially for workingmen, affording them comfortable and sufficiently large dwellings that are yet not too large nor too expensive for the average man. The usual type of house in this section is the single story or story-and-a-half type, of either brick veneer stucco or frame construction, and containing usu- ally four or five rooms with bath, Most of these houses are nicely fin- ished in the interior, and present a cozy appearance, Nice Dwellings Trensane street is the scene of operations for the Waterous-Meek Company, who are constructing four $3,000 houses in this locality. This street is also seeing dwellings being erected by George Burrus, D. J. Hill, C, N. Stacey, Jim MacDon- ald, and M. B. Seaver, who is con- structing two houses worth $3,000 and one to cost $5,800. Mr. Stacey has also chosen Cu- bert street on which to build one of his houses and Isaac Smyth and T. W. Price, are also building on this street. G. A, Townsend has built a $3,500 residence on College avenue, J. V, Johnson one costing the: same amount on Hillside aven- ue, and P., Kostur a $4,200 dwell- ing on Burton road. J. Davidson is crecting a fine English type house at Hillside avenue and Park road that -will cost about $5,200, Four houses worth $3,500 each were built this summer at 313-326 Ritson road south by Mrs, Sophie Kobernick, R. A small office has been erected on the property, and the company now has a stock on hand of sufficient variety to meet the needs of manufacturers in Oshawa and this district, Raw Material As explained by the local manager of the Pedwell firm, manufacturing lumber only will be supplied here, The company will not engage in com- petition with the building supply houses, but will furnish woods that will become, as they are run through various manufacturing processes in Oshawa's factories, automobiles, fe- ture frames, and the other wooden articles made here. Hardwoods Stored Lumber racks have been placed on both sides of the new spur line run into the Pedwell property recently by the Oshawa Railway Company, and nearly the epire storage space is now piled high. Hardwoods: only are stored, as it is almost exclusively hardwoods that are used in the fac- tories of Oshawa. The activity mani- fested about the Pedwell property is indicative to a great extent of the increasing industry of the southern section of Oshawa, MANASOO SINKING STILL A MYSTERY Officers' Evidence Shows No Cause Known for Recent Disaster Owen Sound, Oct. 4.--Four of the five survivors of the Manasoo disaster gave their versions of the foundering of the ship at Wreck Commissioner Demers' inquiry yes- terday. All insisted that they had no idea how the tragedy happen} ed. They stuck to the stories they had told at the inquest conducted afer the body of Dougal McLean, one of he firemen, was recovered, Suggestions that there had been drinking on board to celebarte the final trip of the year, were stout- ly denied by Roy Fox, oiler. Fox declared that he knew. of no liquor on hoard the vessel. Capt. John McKay. master; 0s- borne Long, first officer; Arthur Middleboro, purser, and Roy Fox, oiler, told the Dominion Wreck Commissioner their story. Seated with Capt. Demers in an advisory capacity are Capt. Frank Waugh, who has spent his life as a sailor in the Great Lakes, and Jas. Nich- ol, superintendent of the Owen Sound Iron Works. Questions from these authorities assisted Capt. Demers in securing an accurate ac- count of the happenings immedi- aely prior to the loss of the ship about 2.30 a.m., Saturday morn- ing, Sept. 15. Paris pavers which record the do- ings of the smart set at the fashion- able resorts along the Riviera, how- ever, feature the Mosleys dining and dancing with foreign notables and the exiled princes and princesses of Greece and Russia so that life for them may not seem utter gloom. Hand in hand the Mosleys preach the distribution of wealth on the old fashioned socialistic basis and th makes the attack from the other sid plain sailing. "Inconsistent" is the word, They .were building an im- posing country mansion last year and the "capitalist press" revelled in pic- tures of a socialists' cottage. Both of them scoff at titles and Lady Cynthia has given out that she wants no other profix than a plain "Mrs." but the "Lady," like a faith- ful dog, will not be kept away. When the fifth Baronet, Sir Os- wald Mosley, passes down to Young Oswald the estates, responsibilities and prerogatives pertaining to the sixth baronetcy, the public asks what will he do about it?
