FARMER KILLED BY COWS James Pratt, aged 59, met a sud- den and tragic death in Port Hope Saturday forenoon when he was thrown from a cattle wagon when three cows he was hauling became irightened at a train passing over a viaduct here and plunged through the wagon rack carrying Mr. Pratt with them. He fell on the paved road and sustained a fractured skull and several broken ribs. He passed away in hospital an hour after the accident. HOG SHOW TO BE HELD Northumberland County is again to have a Bacon Hog Show this year. Arrangements are now completed to hold this on the Agricultural Fair Grounds at Campbellfordon Tuesday, Oct. 23. It has been arranged that female animals shown in the market class at this fair, can be purchased from the Committee of Management at market prices. This will give the farmers a fine opportunity to pur- chase good breeding stock, and should help to improve the hog in- dustry in Northumberland County. CARETAKER INJURED Charles Gallamore, caretaker of the Brock Apartments, Kingston, is in the Hotel Dieu, Kingston, suffering serious injuries received in an auto accident at one o'clock yesterday af- ternoon, and grave doubts are held for his recovery. His wife and child also suffered injuries but their con- diticn is not serious. The car was struck by an auto driven by a young man nemed Coventry. The accident occurred at the corner of Pine and Division streets, Kingston. Coventry escaped with a few cuts, He is be- ing held by the police pending the outegme of Gallamore's injuries, CANADA HOUSE SCENE IN CONFIDENCE TRICK London, Sept. 16--Leslic Raymond, South African engineer, appeared in Bow Street Police Court on Saturday | | charged with stealing £3 (about $15), a wedding ring and a wrist-watch by means of a confidence trick. The victim of the theft, a widow, testified that Raymond told her he had been shipwrecked on his way back from Canada, and that the Canadian Pacific Steamships Com- pany had arranged to pay him $35,- 000, but in the meantime he was without money, and had no place to sleep. The widow said that she lent him the money and her wedding ring. She also gave him the wrist- watch to take for repairs. They went to Canada House, she said, and her companion left her out- side while he apparently went to draw the compensation money. TRAPPED IN AUTO MOTORIST RESCUED Meaford, Sept. 16.--While driv- ing across the railway station bridge over the Big Head River saturday morning, Herbert Sinclair han his machine through the rail- ing. It dived fifteen feet into fif- teen feet of water, carrying Mr. Sinclair with it, still at the wheel. Mr. Sinclair is unable to swim and was saved by Darley Lovat, who saw the accident and plunged into the water with his clothes on, The latter got one of Lis feet mixed pp'in the car and Loyal had a hard job getting him out, He was driving the delivery truck for a local grocery, and in driving over the bridge turned out too far in passing anohter vehicle. The car struck the wood railing and went through into the river, The truck was pulled from the river, hadly smashed and damagad from water, WESTERN DEBATERS WILL TOUR ONTARIO Winnipeg, Sept. 16--In furtherance of its policy of encouraging national, imperial and international debating, the National Federation of Canadian University Students announces the completion of arrangements for a de- hating team from Western Canada to tour Ontario, Quebec apd Maritimes. The Western team will have as its manager Nelson Chapel, a promin- ent debater and student of the Uni» versity of Alberta. G. E. Britnell University of Saskatchewan debate leader, and W. CHURCH OF ENGLAND MAY REVISE BOOK OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT London, Sept. 16.--An attempt may be made to take the Prayer Book question out of the hands of Parliament altogether, according to an article in today's issue of The Sunday Times. The article was written in connection with the coming meeting of the Bishops at Lambeth Palace, called to decide what action 1s to be taken in regard to the second defeat of the Prayer Book measure in British Parlia- ment. Stating that the possibility of securing amendments to the en- sbling act so that the Church may settle its own domestic concerns through 21 Assembly and Convoca- tions ,as does the other established Church, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, is to be thoroughly discussed ,the article says that a committee of statesmen and church- men to prepare the way for this extension of privilege has been proposed by the Primate, Should the Church of England obtain these powers, it could deal with its own creeds and forms of ment.
