Our girls' baseball team defeated the Orono girls at Tyrone on Monday and won a prize of $5.00. Miss Vera Power has resumed her duties at Newcastle school. We are hoping for fine weather and a large crowd at the school fair on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Snowden and Mr. and Mrs. John Sanders, town, spent Friday at Caesarea, THORNTON'S CORNERS Thornton's Corners, Sept. 4--Mr. and Mrs. E. Pipher and Miss Dolly King were C.N.E. visitors last week. Mr. and Mrs, E. Pascoe and Mr. and Mrs. W. Pierson motored to St. Catharines recently to spend a week end. Miss Betty Robinson has returned home after spending the past two months with her grandmother at London and Port Stanley, Lake Erie, Mr, and Mrs. J. Lewington and daughters Marion and Ethel, have re- turned from their motor trip through the States. Miss Marion Lewington has returned from a two weeks' vaca- tion in Muskoka. The many friends of Mr. Morley Tann were very sorry to hear of his serious accident last week. While helping a neighbor to load up some cattle one of them turned on Morley crushing him against the wall .and one horn went completely through his right arm, badly tearing the mus- cles. Morley is now confined to the Oshawa hospital. All hope for a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. George Reynolds and family, of Courtice, visited at the home of G. H. Robinson on Sunday, bringing with them Miss Frances Robinson, who has been ing the past week with them in Courtice. Visitors to the CN.E. over the week end were: Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lick, Mr. and Mrs. Will Pierson, Mr. and Mrs. Everitt Jackson, Misses Edna and Flossie Reeson, Florence Garrard, Helen Pollard and Orilla Taylor, Messrs Gordon Reeson, Nor- man Garrard, Harold Pierson, Walter Buss and Frank Luke. Sunday guests at the home of Mr. Norman Buss were Mrs, Buss' bro- ther, Mr. Herbert Walters, wife and son, of Detroit, and another brother, Mr. John Walters and family, of Toronto. Don't forget the dates of the Osh- awa fair, September 11-12-13. All come and have a good time. There are fireworks on the evenings of September 12th and 13th. Also big vaudeville acts. EBENEZER Ebenezer, Sept. 4--Three regular services were held on Sunday last at Ebenezer church and Sunday School, Our pastor, Rev. J. H. Stain- ton, who has not been with us for some weeks, was present at both church services and delivered two very inspiring sermons, His text in the morning service was "The Ar- row of the Lord's Victory" and in the evening he began a series of talks about the men who were responsible for the death of Jesus. His subject] was "Judas Iscariot." The choir add- ed much to both sermons by the beautiful music which they rendered. Sunday School held its regular ses- sion in the afternoon and although the attendance was small a very help- ful time was spent by all. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hancock are here from the West, visiting with relatives in this community, The meetings of the Young Peo- on Thursday evenings during the summer months, have been with- drawn for the month of September. Regular meetings for the fall and winter will begin in October. Mr. and Mrs. H. Rose, of Cherry Valley, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. F, W. Rundle. Many from this community are at- tending the Canadian National Ex- hibition and report that is it better than ever, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pickell and baby, of Detroit, are visiting at his father's, Mr, Dean Pickell Regular services will be held next Sunday at Eb . Rev. Staint will occupy the pulpit in the church services. Everyone is welcome. The schools re-opened on Tuesday morning and pupils and teachers are once more back at their work, from which they have been resting for the past two months. Harvest and threshing are well ad- vanced in this district. The majority have their harvesting dome and many have both completed. FAVOR PAVING BY-LAW bY St. Mary's, Sept. 4.--St. Mary's citizens voted overwhelmingly for the Council's proposed paving by- law here today and for the expenm- diture of not more than $29,000 for the completion of a concrete pavement on the eastern and west- ern ends of the present pavement on Queen street. FIRE SWEEPS TOWN Prince Rupert, B.C., Sept. 4.-- One man, an Indian named Fred Ross, is dead, and several bulld- ings, including the United church, were destroyed by fire at Port Simpson, at the mouth of the Skeena River today.
