"PAGE TEN \ THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1928 Additional Sport Oshawa Seniors Win Again in Toronto on Saturday Show Marked Superiority Over Waghorne's Blue- Shirts to Win 6-2 WHITE SCORES THREE (By Staff Reporter 'While St Simon's were Bove de- feated by St. Catharines on Satur. day, Oshawa moved up into a tie for second place with the Toronto Saints when they handily emerged victori- ous over Torontos at the Ulster Sta. jum by a 6 to 2 score. Jt was a t and clean game which saw Osh- awa only assuming their comfortable margin in the last two quarters. Scoring three goals out of the six, #Toots" White was in the spotlight on Saturday, and besides his bullet shot, he turned in a fine e with his passing and checking 2a well, Mel Whyte was also prominent while McGrath and Jack Walsh were prob- ably the most dangerous ball car- riers of any throughout the game, Goalie Held Score Down Hobson in goal turned in an out stahding performance for Toronto: while Beasley and Laceby were th most consistent on the field. Bai was flashy and scored one of Toron- to's two goals. Beasley counted te other, No Score in First ! Fox and DeGray, under the pres- sure, were put off for checking too !| strongly and while they were off, Chuck Davis was right in on Shan- non in the Oshawa nets for a point blank shot. Stopping the shot how- ever, Shannon drew a great ovation from the crowd. Hobson earned a similar acclaim just at the end of the period when he stopped Barron's scorching pellet from about 20 yards out in front. The bell rang with no score being made while both teams so far appeared on an equal footing. The passing and checking was wi nigh perfect in this quarter and if the teams were ineffective, it was be- cause of the strong defensive work and the smart goal keeping of both aggregations. Toronto's Score Jack Walsh and Toots White made an opening drive on Toronto's net to start the second quarter but making a quick break-away from their defending area when they gained possession of the ball, To- rontos drove down the field and on a sweet combination Bain to Davis to Bain, the last mentioned beat Shannon for the first goal of the game. Bain was only ten feet from Shannon when he let the shot fly and the latter didn't have a chance in the world. ; With Torontos getting the first taste in the scoring, Oshawa came back with a do-or-die spirit and al- though they lost Bob Stephenson and Kelley Degray in penalties. Smith- son scored Oshawa's first counter on a pass from Reeve while two min- utes later on a smart pass from Scott Hubbell, Toots White put Osh- awa one goal in the lead. This pair coming in quick succes- sion gave Oshawa new pep and they went out to pile up a proverbial do- zen but they met with hard fought opposition from the home team every inch of the way, The play centred around the Torontos' net however but the bell brought the quarter to a close with Oshawa still battling to augment the 2 to 1 score. As shown by Bob Stephenson's and Kelley Degray's penalties and several minor ones, there was elgetricity in the air during this quarter but for- tunately no fistic encounters broke out and the players instead directed their surplus energy to make this an- other exciting inning such as the first, Oshawa Gets Two Only two minutes had elapsed in the third when Oshawa added their third goal. Taking the ball on the face-off, one of the slickest bits of passing seen anywhere in the game carried the hall down the field and when Toots White shot and hit the top of the net, Mel Whyte grabbed the rebound and drove the apple into the net past Hobson, Again taking the aggressive, Reeve started another attack but while both he and several others of the defend- ing section were up the field, Toron- tos made a dangerous but unsuccess- ful drive, Play returned to the To- ronto area but the blue and white clan again carried the ball down the field and in a mix up in front of the Oshawa net, Beasley scored Toronto's The Arcade, Limited ew Pleated Skirts Priced at $3.95 to $5.95 Misses' Fine Pleated All Wool Skirts in Plain and Fancy, Colors, Sizes 14 to 20, Special $3.95 Beautiful Plaid Skirts $4.95 or $5.95 All Wool Plaid Skirts, fine pleated, in a wonderful selec- tion of designs. Bains for Toronto missed the tie- ing counter at this period by a mat- ter of two inches when he hit the top of the net but rallying, Oshawa then cleared the danger area and carried the ball down the field where after a merry scramble, Bob Stephenson passed out to Toots White in front of the net, who promptly scored Osh awa's fourth counter. Pressing the play, Oshawa took no less than seven shots on Hobson in a hectic five minutes at the last of the iod but thanks to Hobson's excellent work, they were forced to remain content with a 4 to 2 count when the bell rang for the quarter, The last period opened with a mix up around the Toronto nets and fin- ally emerging with the ball, McGrath ut a clean shot past Hobson for M.C's fifth counter. Still pressing the Toronto net, Degray and White both took dangerous shots but missed before Torontos came back to stage an attack on the Oshawa net. For five minutes Torontos buzzed around Pat Shannon's citadel without avail. They passed and counter- checked, ran with the ball and shot but were unable to send the pill past the green and white net guardian. When they finally subdued the rally, Oshawa again took a hand in the play and with a few minutes still left before the end the game, Toots White made the last score of the con- test on a nice shot from close in. Al- though Torontos made a last dashing attempt they were forced to bite the dust when the bell sounded with the final 6 to 2 count standing in Osh- awa's favour. Both claim they will score knockouts. It is perhaps significant that, although Gold has repeatedly predicted that he would stop Rocco, not until last night did the latter venture the opinion that Gold would be on the receiving end of a knock- out punch. ; Rocco, flyweight champion of Can- ada, finished his training in a man- ner highly satisfactory to his hand- lers. He is hard as nails, and, while recognizing that Gold is a great pun- cher, feels that he can withstand the Philadelphia boy's hardest blows. Neither will have any difficulty in weighing in at the required 112 pounds, flyweight championship weight. Gold is the harder puncher, while Rocco is perhaps a trifle speedier than his rival. Both are of the aggressive type, and a knockout cither way would not be surprising. The Semi-final Bout Upon his showing in the semi-final will depend Alex. Hart's chances of getting a main bout here. He tack- les Tony Tozzo, brother of Rocky Kansas, former lightweight champion of the world. Tozzo has been com- ing along rapidly and will extend Hart.
