LONG TIME FINDING OUT The death of Police Sergeant Har- ry Smith, who was drowned while rescuing his daughter last week, will be regretted by all who admire cour- age and devotion to duty. Itis a sad commentary on human nature that it requires a tragedy of this nature to make us feel how much we owe to the men who comprise the police force. To the bereaved family the Spectator extends déep sympathy, .|nihilate CHURCH ENDORSES MODERN FEMINISM Rome, Aug. 21.--The Catholic Church has always recognized and encouraged the sane ambitions of modern feminism, declared Pope Pius, speaking before the Sacred Congregation of Rites, The history of feminine religious orders confirmed this, he said, since they are independent of episcopal jurisdiction. "If, therefore, today woman in going back to feminist ideals, turn- ed her regard to the examples of the saints and to the teachings oi the Church, she will find a just and holy response to her aspirations,' said the Pontiff, The occasion was the solemn proclamation of virtue of the Ven- erable Paola Frassinetti, who founded the Sisters of Saint Doro- thy. The Pontiff sald that the new- ly-proclaimed Venerable had by her "generous consecration to God in the flower of her virgin purity," shown to the world of today "the beauty of Christian modesty in a moment when it seems woman is doing everything in order to an- in herself everything characteristic which renders her more beautiful, namely--purity, simplicity and modesty." This, he said, not only was true among persons belonging 'to the world for whom--terrible thing-- Jesus was unwilling to pray but also among many who do not wish to renounce the glory of the Chris- tian name." "This is the blindness, solely ex- plainable by remembrance of what fascination is exercised by vanity of which the Scriptures speak with such grave words' the Pope con- tinued, adding that modern fem- inism_ preached nothing beyond that woman sho be sufficient to herself and render herself inde- pendent of suggestions and subju- gation to men and open her own ways for herself. "Very well, if all this implies is the respect due aH consciences and respect toward all Divine and hu- man laws, the Church has always recognized and encouraged such feminism. The example of Veuer- able Frassinetti confirms it." Previously, in commenting on the proclamation of the virtue of Bavarian Capuchin, Conrad von Parzhan, the Pontiff remarked that his generous abandoment of pa- tetnal wealth "is teaching us the beauty of renunciation in a me- ment in which the cupidity for earthly things is the cause of so much terrible evil in private and communal life." . POOR JUDGMENT SUGGESTED IN CAR FATALITY VERDICT Stratford "Aug. 20.--After delib- erating two hours tonight, a Cor- oner"s jury, empanelled under Cor- oner Dr.. Fraser, to inquire into the death of Irene Cook, New Ham: burug, returned the following ver- diet: "We, the jury, find that the deecased came to her death on the Shakespeare-Tavistock Highway on the night of Aug. 6, when a car driven by one, Clarence Schneider, Milverton, left the road and turn- ed over inthe ditch. We, the jury, are of the opinion that the driver did not use the best judgment un- der the ciréumstances.""
