When wallboards have shrunk and show cracks at each seam, it is imp- tant, before using these finishes over them, to cover the cracks and corner defects with threes inch strips of wire mosquito netting. A very slight application of the paint to the wounded surface will keep the netting in place until the final coat seals it in, Wallpapers should never be applied over cracks, If the wall is plaster, EE T h our @ cal } ene chi el or Jabie ud ; son tried out his birth saw on the : like a painter, a down, - ing for trouble, . : When mertar i crumbled in the chimney jgints, the disintegration may be stopped. by "pointing up" the brick with a mixture of one cupful of hy- drated lime, three cupfuls of Portland eight cupfuls of sharp sand, and enous water to make a thick ste, A kitchen knife with a pliable lade. is a. good tool for applying the mortar to the crumbling edges. It may be pressed into place with a round pencil, Flashings and Eaves Troughs Sticky asphalt pastes are useful in closing slight leakages in flashings and valley, tin, Rusted pinholes are easily stopped with these eompounds and further rust is checked. The same is trye of caves troughs. Excessive rust should be scraped off before ap- plying the paste. Repairing the Walls In winter, with our heating plants at work, there is a drying and shrink- ing process going on in our homes egardless of our humidifying efforts. oisture ig drawn from all the in- terior trim 'and even from our own skins. Cracks open in the floors, the panelling, the wallboards. Wallpaper may be torn asunder, What shall be done? Our first im- pulse is to fill the cracks with any old thing and paint or paper over the wound; But wait! What will hap- pen when the furnace gobs out in spring and. normal moisture returns, or even abtiormal moisture from damp cellars? The finish materials will ex- pand again, not quite to their form- er place perhaps, but, very evidently, they will demand more space than they occupied in the dry winter, If we put a non-elastic, rigid-as- fron compound into our winter cracks it will be crumpled by the re-expan- sion of spring. It will fall out, leay- ing jagged, tooth-like edges. t is best to fill cracks with plastic materials which are as near the na- ture and consistency of the surround- TYPICAL HOMES OF paste, Jachens he wood, may be sandpaper: painted; wi screws and nails. In all practical intents, it becomes, after its quick hardening, an actual wood. Hence it is an ideal crack filler for wooden floors. It should not be colored umn- til the work is done. Other Uses of Plastic Wood When hard, this new material does not chip, crack, crumble or splinter, It is powerfully adhesive. Broken drawer handles may be held perman- ently in place with it, the repair be- ing sandpapered, varnished or paint- ed, just kke wood. Sometimes a loose drawer knob has no screw thread to tighten it up. This material may be packed around the bolt inside, and, when hardened; the drawer pull is as stout as when new. It may be used in replacing chip- ped carvings, broken corners. When hinge screws are too loose in their holes to be tightened by the screw threads, this paste will make new threads. When hammer handles have lost their wedges, it may be crowded in_the holes to form a new wedge. It fills dents, or the line where Bobby's saw cut the desk. It tight- ens knives in loose handles, resets loose tiles in floors and walls, fills gouges in cork linoleum. The white streak made by scratch- es on pianos or other dark varnished finishes may be first filled if deep, but in any case a light application of iodine hides the wound. Hippo Products' po New Plant The new addition to the paint manufacturing plant of the Pa Products Company is now in ooera- tion at New Toronto. This is.one of the most modern plants of its kind on thé continent. Hippo Products Company is an all- Canadian firm with offices at Mon- treal and Toronto. The various products which they manufacture produce waterproof surfaces when used according to their specifications. Their exhibit this year at the Cana- dian National Exhibition (Booth No. 24 Construction Building) will be well worth a visit. Many samples finished with their different lines, in- cluding Hippo permanent pliable oil, will be on display. I lay very little stress either upon asking or giving advice. Generally speaking, they who ask advice know what they wish to do, and remain firm to their intentions, A man may allow himself to be enlightened «n various points, even upon matters of expediency and duty; but, after all, he must determine his course of ac- tion for himself. ~Wilhelm von Humboldt. You better live your best and act vour best and think your best to- day; for today is the sure prepara- tion for tomorrow and all the other tomorrows that follow. --Harriet Martineau. GM.0, EMPLOYEES ing parts as possible, Plaster is a pleasant compound to work with. When water has been added to the powder and forms a thick paste, it may be employed in all cracks in plaster walls. It becomes an integral part of the wall or ceil- ing. ' There are several excellent "plastic paint" preparations on the market which, with the addition of water as directed on the containers, may be painted or trowelled over almost any wall and finished in dozens of artis- tic designs. They :iay be applied thinly or thickly, may be heavily em- bossed or lightly smoothed with the palm of the hand, a whisk hroom, or a crushed newspaper. Panelled ef- fects, stencils, ordinary oil paints, all may be used to produce unlimited or- iginal colors and designs. These new plastic wall finishes are fill the crack first. If the wall is cardboard, use reinforcing strips as above, except supplement muslin for netting. Wallpaper paste is better than glue in attaching muslin strips, Glue, when dry, may become brittle and the paper may drag it off with a snap. For the same reason commer- cially prepared sizing: compounds are better over the whole wall, before papering, than home-made plain glue sizing. Cracks in Floors Most substances for this purpose must be colored as near the floor tone as possible before applying. Paint, apphed only to the surface of the filler, may chip off. Floor fillers must have a certain resilience, other- wise expansion will force out any- thing we may put into the cracks, Modern chemistry has given us "plas- tic wood."
