Six Years' Progress at the Phillips' Plant Periodical Building Extensions an Unfailing Indication of the Demand for this Firm's Products--Provision of Additional Facilities how Under Way CONSPICUOUS factor in the more recent indus- : trial growth of the Ci of Oshawa has been the opment of the business estab- lished here some six years ago the W. E. Phillips pany, The firm's principal activity is the manufacture of mouldings for interior decora- tion, picture frames, and mir- rors, The manufacture of windshields, bodylights and rear vision mirrors for General Motors has also formed a large of the Company's business gince its incorporation. The growth of the City of Oshawa since 1922 has been a fair barometer of the growth of the Phillips Com- It is only six years ago that ER) 'Phillips took over the property Thornton, Rubber Com- pany on Prospect Street and com- menced manufacturing operations in a small building which was the fore- runner of the extensive plant shown in the illustration, The record of the W. E. Phillips Company has been one of continuous progress. Scarcely a year had elapsed from the time the business was established until it was necessary to make an extension providing 15,- 000 additional square feet, The ex- tension, which took the form of a three-storey mill building, was quick- ly followed by other additions. A new polishing and fitting room was added, a bevelling department was erected, more storage space was pro- vided; withal, further appropriations for building purposes were found necessary from time to time. Coin: cidently with the enlargement of the Oshawa plant there has come the es- tablishment of agencies throughout the Dominion. An idea of the out- put of the Phillip's factory may be gained from the fact that during 1927 over a million feet of lumber were EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF W, E. PHILLIPS, HEAD OF THE CAMPANY used, two and one-half million square feet of plate glass and no less than one million feet of window glass, The general atmosphere of the Phillips plant is a healthy one, em- bodying principles of lighting, heat- ing, ventilation and sanitation which are the foundation of efficiency in the operation of the modern factory, i The W. E. Phillips Company have recently completed a comsiderable addition to the office portion of their building, while the extension of the general plant is now under way. The office addition consists of two storeys and basement and entails. consider- able alterations in the existing build- ing. This extension provides up-to- date office accommodation which will provide for a considerably increased staff. The new Executive offices are an attractive feature of this work, The latest addition to the general plant of the W. E. Phillips Company, imited, ists of a b t an two floors, approximately 150 x 50 feet. Factory construction is em- ployed and continuous daylight steel Nindows are provided on all three sides. It is of interest to record that all work in connection with this factory has been carried out under gener: contract with Ed. Stith, of Oshawa, under the direction of G. Roper Gouinlock, Registered Architect, To- ronto, When it shall be said in any coun- try in the world, "My poor are happy: neither ignorance nor dis- tress is to be found among them; my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars; the aged are not in want, the taxes are not oppres- sive; the rational world is my friend, because I am a friend of its happi- ness"--when these things can be said, then may that country boast of its constitution and its government, --Thomas Paine. AM i | B.W. Haynes' Brisk Business Will Enlarge Woodworking Plant to Requirements of Growing Trade T'S a proud boast that B.. W. Haynes makes--that of all the floors he has laid in this city and the many towns around, not one has # necessiated a return trip. Floors are Mr. Haynes' specialty, but his gen- eral contracting and woodworking business has increased to such an ex- larging his plant in the "hollow" off King street west and has purchased a large block of adjoining land that al| will be available for further erpan- sion, It is just seven years ago that he started his small wood-working plant in a shed at the rear of his home in Harmony. From this small begin- ning, of a plant with one wood- working machine, has grown this business that now gives employment to a dozen men and requires this year the enlarging of the floor space by almost two hundred per cent. To the present one-storey, 50 by 50 feet building is being built an addition, 50 by 26 feet, and over the whole a second storey is being raised. To the original combination wood- worker has been added a modern sanding drum, tennoner, double rip- tent that this year he is greatly en-| Po saw, shaper, ball-bearing bandsaw of the latest type, boring mill, six-inch jointer, dado machine, and a four- head moulder, as well as a lathe that will turn either wood or metal work, Besides this equipment, Mr. Haynes has two sanding machines that are constantly busy om hardwood floors in. Whitby, Bowmanville, Port Perry, Orono, Port Hope, Cobourg and Osi awa. In the local plant, Mr. Haynes concentrates on special work. such us combination doors, cabinets, screcas and storm-windows, but contracts are executed for the erection of entire houses. Mr. Haynes numbers among his steady patrons the Bell Telepho:s Company, the local Hydro-Electric ower Co , the banking in. stitutions of the city, and many out. standing private individuals. Associas ted with him for five of the seven years that he has been in business here, Mr. B. W. Haynes has had his brother, John Haymes, who has taken a keen interest in the busi. ness. In the addition which is being made to the present building, w || be housed a paint shop, in which compressed air will be used for an effective "paint brush" after the man- ner of the Duco process. Much more space will also be available for tlie storage of lumber and finished wood. work, which it will Le possible to keep in stock ready for delivery.
