Cameron Electric Co., organized on Dec. 16, 1927, started off with the best sort of asset. That is, Mr. Cameron himself who had just resigned as chief of the Osh- awa Fire Department to enter busi- ness again, after 12 years splendid ly efficient esrvice to the city both as volunteer chief for a number of years, and as full time chief for the two preceding years. Under Mr. Cameron, for the final five years of his service as chief, Osh- awa's fire loss totalled only $178,- 000. This established a record that no other city in Canada has equalled. Much of it, to quote Mr. Cameron, was due to Oshawa citizens' almost grin determina- tion to keep the fire demon under here. With their co-operation, the chief carried out a continuous cam- paign of effective fire pervention which excited Dominon-wide ad- miration. However, all that became a clos- ed book when the Cameron Elec- tric Company was formed. The former chief put his badges away donned overalls and went out after business. Oshawa, admiring his services and appreciative of his outstanding abilities as an electri- cian, have kept him Busy ever since. Important contracts carried out by his firm this year imelude, In addition to a number of private houses and special jobs, the instal- lation of electrical equipment in the new Alger Block and for the Tesaymore Restaurant whieh occu- pies the ground floor and basement of that fine new business block. He had the contract, also, for the new Alger Press building on Al- bert street, the Disney Apartments at 82 Simcoe South, the McLeese Apartments at Ontario and Simcoe, the new Westmount School, Holy Trinity Chureh, the Oshawa Ware- house on McMillan Drive, the Smith, Robertshaw, and. Simpson stores, and the Beaton Dairy Co. Ltd.,, new plant on King street "| west. Mr. Cameron has featured, in aus dition to his electrical work, a 24- hour emergency service which eiti- zens have made wide use of. No call for service at any hour, no matter what job it may be, is given anything else than immediate at- gention hy the Cameron Electric. Mr, Cameron's electrical experi- ence has heen of the widest and most practical sort, In early manhood he had already mastered his trade and entered the service of the Bell Telephone Co. in this district. He was with the Bell organization for 12 years nun. til 1913 when he opened an elar- [trical supply store. and contracting business in Oshawa, then a town, Shortly afterwards, In recogni- A. C. His electrical knowledge ' [proved invaluable inthe installa tion and maintenaneé¢ of the town's elahorate electrict fire alarm sys- tem. He carried on his electrical busi- ness with growing demand for his services until the fire department which he directed was put on a permanent basis with volunteer auxiliaries, He sold his business then and devoted his whole time to the city's service. Mr, Cameron's return to business in 1927 was in line with the city's development and his own interest. The demand for his company's ser- vices has been a feature which, while anticipated, one that Mr, Cameron appreciates very deeply. "One does not drop out of civic life into competitive business," he stated, "without certain misgiv- ings, no matter how high hopes one may hold for the venture. "My best hopes have heen more than realized and I appreciate it in a way that I cannot express in words." He who every morning plans the transactions of the day, and follows out that plan, carries a thread that will guide him through the labyrinth of the most busy life. The orderly arrangement of his time is like a ray of light which darts itself through all his occupations. But where no plan is laid, where the disposal of time is surrendered merely to the chance of incidents, all things lie huddled together in lone chaos, which admits of neither distribution = nor view.--Hugo. This new building represents amaz- ingly rapid growth, and expansion that within four months of locating here required larger premises than those first occupied on Nassau street. Of course, in secking for the rea- son, much must be ascribed to the spirit which makes and has made Oshawa. Like rich soil, and given good seed, business growth: here scems obedient to a law of nature, But the Beaton Dairy Products are the other nine reasons. = Quality, scrupulous cl:anli in pr staff, and service have made Bea- ton's Dairy Products househo'd words in Oshawa and district witlin a few wecks after the first of them were offered for sale, Five city delivery wagons and three wholesale trucks form the Bea- ton's Dairy distribution equipment. With two thousand regular city cuss tomers, the new plant is equipped to handle three times that number. Special attention is being given to district orders and daily trips are made by trucks to Bowmanvills, Whitby, Pickering and Brooklin, The new building, covering an area of 40 by 70 feet, is two stories high and of brick and concrete construc tion throughout. The front of the first floor is ocp cupied by offices and sales rooms. Back of that is the general refrig- erating, pasteurizing and shipping departments. Electricity is used en- tirely for motive power and refrig- eration, A thousand' gallon brine tank is the centre of the refrigeration sys- tem which, by pipes, keeps the tem- perature of storage, hardening, and refrigerator room proper at their cerrect temperatures. Beaton's Dairy ice cream, market ed under the "Country Club" brand, is always at the maximum of effi- ciency and goodness, it is generally declared, % "Stillicious" is malted milk choco- late, sold in fontainets which retail at fiye vents: This delicious drink' is praving very popular in Oshawa and viginity. In the basement of many residences may be found working spaces which call for dampproofness. A dry base. ment is desirable not only because of -| these, but also as a preventive of rus¢ and mold. This matter of dampness is 100 often accepted as a necessary evi. Many dry basements now in use prove the contrary. The footings of new buildings are practically always of monolithic con- crete. Congrete being plastic when made and placed, it brings an cven pressure on all of the inequalities of the ground surface. Footings for in- terior posts supporting the floor beams should be ji mple size to pre- vent settlement. After the footings are in place the | basement wall may be of either mon. | clithic or hollow concrete masonry, | such as block or building tile, accord: ing to the local situation and the pre« ference of the owner. Concrete mas cnry walls are usually less expense Sve. 3 Regarding the matter of water proofing, this may often be avoided or at least simplified by providing proper drainage outside the wall. If the subsoil does not have good drain« age, a line of drain tile placed entirely around the outside of the footing, REMODELLED icious" keeps its quality indefinitely. This is due to special sterelization given it at the Beaton Plant. All milk and cream used in Bea- ton producis come from herds that have been approved, under the Fed. eral act, by the Oshawa Board of Health. Smart New Color Effects Hudson and Essex Cars Hudson and Essex cars are now available in smart fall colors and are 'being especially exhibited in this city, according to Chadburn Motor Co., Hudson-Essex Distributor. These colors, set off effectively the advan- ced lines and vogue which characters ise the current Hudson and Essex cars. "Attractive lines and colors play a most important part today in the public's choice of motor cars. Hud- son-Essex sales which have broken records all this year have centered | largely around style and beauty well as Super-Six performance.
