NINERS RUSH TO SIGN APPLICATION More Than Half the Needed 10,000 Apply in a Short Time London, Aug. 6.--Excellent re- sponse is being made to the call for 10,000 men to assist in the Cana- dian harvest, under the special tarms agreed on between the Cana- dian and British Governments, it was officially announced today, with the mining districts especially quickly filling up the quotas. Totals of 'recruits' telephoned to London today were: South South Wales 1,500, Bristol 1,000, Manchester 2,000, and Edinburgh 1,000. This leaves 4,500, or less than half, to come. The last date of sailing is fixed at Aug. 18, Miners Preferred "If the issue 1s 'oversub- scribed," " as an official of the Overseas Settlement Department expressed it, "we will give prefer- ential treatment to the districts suffering from industrial depres- sion." This would be along the lines recommended by the Domin- fon Government, it having been agreed that unemployed miners would comprise at least 75 per cent, of the total. It is hoped, of course, that the great majority of the men from Britain can find permanent em- ployment on the land in Canada, either as farm laborers or on their own ground. Special terms are to be given to encourage this, and for those returning to Britain the same reduced rates on railways and steamships will be offered as on the journey to the Dominion. Touches Only Fringe "The experiment touches only the fringe of our social problem, but deserves to be closely watch- ed," The Manchester Guardian com- ments editorially today.
