"Additional Sport Dempsey Second 'Heene o » Tonight Manassa es uler Agrees to/Be in Challenger's Corner for the New York, July 25. -- The final blave of the ballyhoo horns woke New York today to retaliation that will be a heavyweight cham- ip fight in the Yankee stad- m tomorrow night. Dut it was not the announcement that Gene Tunney, aviation enthusiast, schoi- ar and king of the leather fingevs, would mateh his speed, ring sei ence and stamina for fifteen rounds sgainst Tom Heeney, the horse. shoe twister from New Zealand tha turned the trick. Into the picture again was fore- ed the familiar figure of Jack Dempsey, This time it will be Dempsey, chief second and advis- er of the challenger, on whow the promoter must depend for the ia- jection 'of life into a match that Be | today bore all the appearauce of a financial corpse. If the New York State Athletic Commission is willing, then Dempsey tomerrow night will climb again througn the ropes of the Yankee Stadium ring, this time lugging a water bucket and with a towel slung ovep his arm rather than draped about his massive shoulders, The former czar of the heavy- weights agreed today to second Heeney in his effort to batter the big marine into oblivion. At a special meeting of the Boxing com- mission, called for 10 am, tomor- row, Rickard has promised that Dempsey will apply for his license, One of the fistic fathers declared today that there was nothing in the rules to prevent Jack's aciing as a second and there appeared no FE MEDAL | | Loree a------ ---- It's full-bodied soles flavour makes a real man's Drink, NATIONAL GROCERS COMPANY LIMITED Whelessle Distributors THE OSHAWA DAILY, TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY 26, 1928 | SHEER CHIFFON FROCKS WORN FOR AND EVENING FUNCTIONS reason or refusing him a Neense, Thus did Rickard turn again to the man whose ring personality has drawn millions of dollars through the turnstiles. For the third time Dempsey will glare across the ring and fidge: while the calm Tunney methodically vre- pares for the opening bell, But this time another man. will take the punches that twice whipped the assa mauler. It wip mark the first heavyweight cham- ih since Dempsey piled Joss Willard in a sodden heap at Teol- edo nine years ago that has found the 'now ring-aged man-killer in the sidelines, Principals Take Rest The nomination of Dempsey to his old familiar role of the gat: at- traction overshadowed all but the continued absence of dvoves «f ticket purchasers from the Madi son Square Garden box offices io- day. In his camp at Fair Haven, N.J., Heeney was in seclusion, his training grind over, Tunney pre- pared to fly to the scene of ba:tle, He will take off from Lake Pleas ant at Speculator, N.Y,, in an am- phibian plane just in time to reach New York for the weighing-in, Unlike other big moments in fight history, the eve of this heavyweight championship quarrel found New York apathetic, There were no crowds of fans from dls. tant cities, thronging hotel lobbies to argue the chances of champion and challenger, A mere trickle of customers filtered towavd the box offices in Madison Square Garden and there was so little bet- ting on the match that the odds of 3 fo 1 on the titleholder were hard te determine. FURTHER REPORTS FROM WEST SHOW SERIOUS HAIL DAMAGE Kerrobert, Sask, July 25.--Practi- cally all the Broadacres district was hailed out in the course of a terrific storm that swept over that area last night. Hail fell for 45 minutes and, driven by a gale of wind, literally drove the wheat into the ground, Two horses were killed when a barn blew over, Threshing machines, cars barns and odd bits of machinery were damaged. It is also reported here that Tramping Lake district has been hailed out, Communication by telephone is impossible, JAPAN SPEAKS PACIFICALLY ON REVISION OF TREATY Tokio, July 25--Barop Tanaka, Prime Minister ,issued a statement to foreign representatives today assur- ing them that Japan was not hostile to Chinese Nationalists, and intend- ed to follow a fair and reasonable policy, He explained that the Japanese Consul-General's advice to Chang Hsueh-ling (Chang's son and succes sor at Mukden) to. reconsider the proposed agreement with Nanking was given at Chang's own request, He said that, while Japan would not allow the commercial treaty with China to be abrogated summarily, she was ready to negotiate its re- vision, | Maybe pressure w comfort, Ten minutes! THOUGHT WAVES OF SLAYER LEAD 70 HIDDEN RIFLE Viennese Criminologist Re: ceives Mental Vibrations-- Helping Solve Mystery Edmonton, July 25.--The most remarkable part of the four Man- ville, Alta., murders to which Ver- non Booher yesterday confessed, according to the police, was the work done by Dr. Adolph Maximil- ian Langser, Viennese expert, in as- sisting to solve the mystery sur- rounding the crimes. Since July 9, when young Boo- her ran to a neighbor's home and announced that he had just found his mother, brother, and two hired hands lying dead around the farm home, the police have slowly wov- en a web of clveumstantial evi dence. But one link was missing, The rifle used, which would bear finger-prints, could not be founa. Knowing that Dr. Langser, in- ternationally known eriminologist, was passing through Canada, Com. missioner W, Bryan of the Alhérta Provincial Police, long an admirs er of Langser's system, invited him to stop off here and assist in finding the gun. Receptive to "Thought Waves" Going to the scene of the wrr- der, the famous criminologist from the School of Applied Psychology at Nancy, France, applied methoas he has developed through years of experience in his laboratories. Dr. Langser and many other leaders in advanced psychology ve- lleve that thoughts are cencrete things, which continue to exist af- ter the thinker has left the place, In other words, the act of think- ing, he says, sets up thought waves which greatly resemble radio waves. Some people are particuiar- ly sensitive to these waves and can 'tune in" on them, to use a radio phrase. Dr. Langser is gifted in this way, and putting himself en rapport, or, in plain words, in a receptive mood, within 15 minutes after reaching the Boo- her house he had a feeling that the gun would he found in a cer- tain spot about 235 yards from the house, in the long grass and scrub brush. Search at this point revealed the weapon, which searchers have ul- most stepped on. Solved Baffling Crimes Dr, Langser has been responsible for the selution of some of the world's most baffling crimes, In 1921, when several Cabinet Minis- ters were bombed in Bucharest, Dr. Langser succeeded in hringing the men responsible to punishmenc after the police had confessed themselves apsolutely beaten. Eighteen months ago Dr, Langs- er was called to China to assist the British military authorities to run down a gang of pirates which were raiding along the southern coasts. In order to gain intimate contact with them he allowed himself to be taken prisoner, Although the doctor came within an ace of be- ing heheaded, he managed to make good his escape, and on evidence furnished by him 18 of the ring- leaders of the gang were shot. Dr. Langser declined to give the de- tails of his escape, beyond saying that it was carried out chiefly by the use of mental powers. exceptionally LITHUANIA OBJECTS TO WAR MANOEUVRES ON POLISH BORDER Koyno. Lithuania, July 25--Peace hangs by a thin thread in the straine ed Polish-Lithuanian relations, ac- cording to an article published today by Lietuva, the official Goyernment organ. Abdominal Belts, Shoulder Braces, Elastic Hosiery and Arch Supports to The Frontier Manoeuyres [ New York, July 26.--The oue object in life at the moment being to keep cool, this wish is reflect- ed in our summer clothes. . Even though we do not actually 'achieve this blssful state of comfort, at least 'diaphanous frocks are a ges- ture, And so the lovely, sheer printed chiffons have (uite taken possess- fon of us this .ummer, One might say there are the invariable ruia for evening wear and almost as uniform for afternpomn, There are designs and color combinations to suit every taste. For daytime the preference is for small floral prints, usually with a black or dark blue background, more or less frilly, theugh not extremely so, Black and white is also very smart, and black and sand is a favorite combination. For street wear chiffon is used somewhat, but printed crepes and sating rather predominate for this type of frock. Plain Hats Popular With these street things, the smart woman wears but one soyt of hat--the medium sized exotic straw, either balibuntle, baku or some related weave, in a natural shade, The chic woman shows great simplicity in her accessor- ies, and nothing could carry out this theme more effectually than such a hat which offers a neutral, sober background to the gaiety of prints. These hats are extremely plain, usually with a narrow band of matching belting ribbon, or possi- bly one of brown or black, Occas- ionally velvet is used instead. Many of the brims are one sided. a surprisingly flattering note, and an equally becoming line is the poke shape turned up in the hack and very suggestive of the old-fa- shioned hats in prints, Agnes sponsors these in her new collection, but gives them an in- teresting modern twist, The brim slopes down at the sides, framing the face, while the line of the cen ter front lifts a bit to reveal the forehead in a way that is quite enchanting. To give the world ev- en a glimpse of one's forehead is such a departure from what our hats have been for the past few seasons, that it will probably take us some time to become accustom- ed to the change. Although chiffon printed dress- es are undeniably smart for sum- mer evenings, the dressmakers hava done some very interesting things with lace frocks this season. For the woman wha travels, and yet would look fresh at her journey's end, the lace gown is a constant joy, because it is cool for ong thing, but principally because of its delightful non-wrinkling quali ties, It may be unpacked at the very last moment, yet it will shake out and look quite as though i had never heen packed at all. This virtue is not shared by every fabric and as we all know to our sorrow the crumpled frock is one of the big problems of traveling. In a season which is pre-emin- ently feminine, lace seems partie- ularly suitable, and it has enjoyed an unprecedented vogue. The two colors most favored are beige and black, though there are in addition many lovely dyed laces in pale pastel tints. Lace lends itself so charmingly to the hias flounce and dipping hemline--invariable char- acteristics of the evening mode. Chanel, with her usual original- ity, was the first to stiffen the flounce of her lace dresses with horse hair braid, achieving some- seen pastoral REDROSE TEA isdood ted If you want the very best, ask for Red Rose Orange Pekoe " In clean, bright Aluminum thing quite novel in the matter of silhoudite, This device gives to lace infinitely more interesting and quite bouffant lines. The black lace evening gown--- after all is said and dane, greatest favorite--is flattering a- like to blonde and bruneete. It has a mysterious Spanish quality which never fails to make it of interest, and to lend a glamor to the woman who wears it. Eminently practical for both formal and informal oec- casions, it is an admirable cou- tume for restaurant dining. Orig- inal touches are sometimes given these black lace frocks by an in- troduction of a pale tinted chiffon flower or a touch of flesh satin or French blue velvet in the belt, FIVE WOMEN ELECTED AS SAULT TRUSTEES Sault Ste. P. Lannin, according te statement made by Ross W, Gray, local lawyer. 'The magistrate assured Mr. Cars. callen that the officers and members of the County Court had nothing to do with it and intimated that he would refer the incident to the pro- per authorities. In his statement Mr. Gray said he felt, and other members of the Bar present also felt, that the matter should be called to the attention of the court. Mr. Carscallen, waiting to defend a client, spoke to Provincial Constable $cott, and then walked out of the court to the police office. He was immediate- ly ordered out by the Chief with the words, "get out, and stay out," Mr, Gray said.
