(13-15) SUGGESTION DOESN'T HOLD (Toronto Mail Empire) An evening paper suggests that the reason for the increasing nun- ber of motor accidents in this pro- vince is the abandonment of the 0. T. But in the United States, where prohibition is supposed to be raging, the rate is forty per cent more than in this province, and twice as great as the A13b) whole Canadian rate, HALIFAX VESSEL 15 CHAMPION OF FISHING FLEETS Loss of U.S. Entr Entrant "Henry Ford" Completes Jinx to Their Entries WENT AGROUND Reported Total Loss After Going Aground--*Blue- nose" Is Victor (By Canadian Press) Gloucester, Mass, July 17.-- Loss of the fishing schooner Henry Ford last month off the west coast of Newfoundland completed the work of the jinx which has dogged United States contenders for in- ternational racing honors and leaves the Halifax schooner Blue- nose the undisputed champion of the North Atlantic fishing fleets. The Henry Ford went aground on WHERE DO THEY GO? (Stratford Beacon Herald) The world heard much of the disappearance of Captain Loewen- stein. He was a tremendously rich man, powerful in the financial world, and naturally his dropping out created a stir. But Loewenstein had no monop- oly on this business of disappear ing. Paris reports that every year there are 500 mem and women in that city, many of them prominent and wealthy, whe disappear and are never heard of again. Apparently there is no answer supplied to the very logical ques- tion: Where do they go? Patou, Descat and Alphonsine all favor the irregular brim. Foreman Ca ter Wante Aa Experienced and reliable carpenter, thirty to thirty five years old who would be capable of running a seventy-five thousand dol- lar job, handle men and understand plans well. Ap+ ply C, M. MUNDY, c-0 Mundy Printing Co., Indreshoal while on a halibut fish- ing trip and has been reported a total loss. Her crew was saved. The other United States con- tenders for the International Fishermen's Cup which have gone to their doom since the races were inaugurated in 1920 for the pur- pose of improving the type of fish- ing vessels used, were the Colum- hia, Esperanto, Puritan and Eliza- beth Howard. Loss of the Columbia was the most tragic of the disasters. She sailed for the fishing grounds in July of 1927, never to return to port. It is believed she founder- ed in the storm of August 24 of that year, when severe losses 'to shipping were suffered. In June, 1921, the Gloucester schooner Esperanto, which had de- feated the Canadian schooner Del- awana to win the international cup, went to her doom in the treacherous surf of Sable Island, but her erew was rescued. Gloucester men huilt the Puri- tan, intending to match her against the Canadians, but even hefore she was launched, seers of the water- front knew she would never race Her doom was sealed hy one of the old superstitions of the sea when one of her hatches over- turned. She left the stocks in April, 1922, and two months later was In the *graveyard of the At- lantic" having struck on the north- west bar of Sable Island, almost at the spot where the Isperanto was wrecked. Tt was following loss of the Puritan that Gloucester built the Henry Ford. Her ill luek hegan an hour after she was launched when she grounded on a sandhar at the mouth of the Essex River, where her hull pounded for a week before she could be pulled off, re- paired and made ready for fishing. The jinx went aboard the Fliza- beth Howard, smartest of all the schooners that figured in the fish- ermen's contests, during the elf- mination races off here In 1922, when she lost her topmast ig one trial and narrowly escaped colli- sion with a destroyer in an other. A year later, November, 1923, this graceful craft was lost off Port- er's Island, Nova Scotia. All the schooners had other mis- haps than those which ended their careers. 'The Columbia was ram- med hy a French trawler on her second trip to the Grand Banks and narrowly escaped sinking. She was repaired at St. Pierre, but the delay prevented her competing for the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy, sailed for in connection with Glou- cester's 300th anniversary cele- bration. The Canadians have not esecap- ed the jinx. During the elimina- tion races at Halifax the first year of the contests the captain of ope of the contenders fell overboard and was drowned, and during the first international race at Halifax one of the owners of tre Delawana died suddenly, As the Bluenose was preparing to sail for home af- ter the Gloucester series of 1922, a member of her crew fell from a dock to his death, WHAT'S THE USE? (Woodstock Sentinel-Review Another baloon race has be finished and prizes awarded, but of what use has it all been? Bal- loon races in these days tell very little outside of the fact that a gas- inflated bag will stay in the air until the gas leaks out. Oshawa.
