BELLEVILLE WOMAN KILLED Mrs. Mary Purdy, Belleville, mid- dle-aged and somewhat deaf, was this afternoon killed on the provine cial highway in front of her home just west of the school for the deaf and a short distance west of the city limits. Mrs. Purdy evidently became confused in crossing the highway and was struck down by a car own- ed and driven by Michael Amodeo, of 240 Princess street, Kingston, The car was proceeding eastward towards this city, and a spectator of the accident stated that Amo- deo was not driving fast. The un- fortunate lady was kmngcked to the pavement and sustained injuries which caused her death a few min- utes later, An inquest will be held, COGK FIGHT RAID Prominent Racing Men In. cluded in Norfolk Dragnet London, July 13.--The news has leaked out that while a number of men prominent in racing circles were excitedly watching a carefully guarded cockfight in the remote Norfolk hamlet. of New Bucken- ham, they were suddenly surprised by policement, who stopped the contest, Between 40 and 50 men, many of them well-to-do, had gone to the secret rendezvous at a farm and watched a terrific battle between two game cocks armed with silver spurs. Within a radius of ahout half a mile of the building where the fight was held guards were posted in a ring, They had been instruct- ed to give immediate warning of the approach of any suspicious per- son, Despite these precautions the po- lice in plain elothes, who were working under Superintendent Car- ter, of Wymondham, managed to pass through the cordon to the cockpit without raising the alarm. Their arrival caused great con- sternation, as several of the spec- tators were men prominent in Lon- don socinl circles. It is understood that so agistrates were among the company, The first action of the police was to pick up the cocks, thereby ending the contest, They then took the names of about twenty of the spectators, Later they took posses- sion of a number of game cocks found on the premises and removed these to the police station. Proceedings are being taken hy summons, The police have for months heen trying to discover the scenes of the cock fights, which they knew were frequently taking place in Norfolk and the surrounding counties and attended hy many sporting people from Newmarket. The promoters of these {llegal contests have taken the greatest care to make them as secret as pos- sible. Not only are they always carefully guarded, but also the spectators are sworn never to re- veal their existence. A horse box which is believed to have been on its way from New- market to New Buckenham with fighting cocks inside, broke down at Thetford. The local police were surprised to see this vehicle in Thetford, where is was on the way to no race meeting, Thelr suspicions were aroused, § [TALY'S FINANCIAL POLICY I$ SOLVED View Taken as Result of Resignation of Count Volpi Rome, July 13.--Count Giuseppe Volpi's resignation as Minister of Finance was viewed in authorita- tive circles as an indication that the most difficult problems of the Fascist financial policy has been solved for the present. It was assumed generally that the Ministry of Fipance in the fu- ture will be merely administrative, with the outstanding questions satisfactorily overcome and the system established hy Count Volpi and Premier Mussolini securely en- trenched. The new ministry is ex- pected to follow closely the present Fascist policy. Although the resignation of Vol- pl was regarded in some circles as an indication that the Premier was displeased with present condl- tions, there was no reaction shown by the Bourses. The accepted view was that Volpi had handled the dif- ficult financial situation as well as could be expected. The country's finances were re- ported strong in every quarter, and state bonds and commercial and industrial stocks were all slightly improved. While Italy is passing through the same strained situation all na- tions must encounter after the sta- bilization of currency, there wus not the slightest outward evidence of a serious crisis at present or in the near future. This monument to be unveiled by King Victor Emmanuel in com- memoration of the Austrian defeat of 1918, was reported in the Aus- trian press to contain the following inscription: "Here are the frontiers of the Fatherland. From this point we have driven the barbarian, lan- guage, laws and arts." One word, however, Is under- stood to have heen changed, name- ly, "barbarian' into 'foreigner." Fedele Resigned Tt is declared in Vienna that the Italian Minister of Education, Sig- nor Fedele, resigned because Pre- mier Mussolini desired to alter the wording of the original inscription, Chancellor Seipel received a de- legation of south Tyrolese depu- ties and mayors who protested against the inscription, but secur- ed no satisfaction. Chancellor Sel- pel having told them that he was helpless. Frontier Closed Tt 1s understood that the Italian Government has closed the Italo- Austrian frontier for six days to avoid incidents, The south Tyrol- ese Nationalist parties are known to have planned a demonstration against Italy for the suppression of the German language in the South Tyrol and the police have been very active to prevent any in- cidents which might mar Italo- Austrian relations. Innsbruck de- spatches say the Italian consulate has been instructed to refuse an Italian visa to Austrian subjects until further notice, OLYMPIC TEAM ENLIVENS VOYAGE Canadians Bound for Am. sterdam Are Training on Ship Latest reports on the progress of the White Star liner Albertic, which is carrying the Olympic team to Europe, disclose the fact that the whole party "got together' be- fore the liner reached Quebec. On the trip down the river the games party was the centre of attraction to the many passengers travelling by the liner. There were big men, small men, who weighed anything from 95 lbs. up to 200 lhs, A colored runner caused much mer- riment by appearing on deck with a blue and white beret, a red and white tie, smart looking plus fours and vivid stockings. In addition he wore a monocle and carried a stick, while he enjoyed a constitu- tional round the deck, He turned out to be Phil Edwards, an eu- trant for the 800 metres. One of the Argonaut eights, standing 6 feet 5 inches, teamed up for a photograph with the diminu- tive Bert Richardson, the marathon runner, who weighs 95 lbs,, and is 5 feet 2 Inches, oing down the river some of the boys did a little private train- ing in the specially constructed cabin gymnasium, which had been equipped by the White Star Line for the special use of the contest- ants, but there was not a regular workout, as the coach, Capt. J. R. Cornelius, wanted all the athletes to rest for the first 24 hours. The Albertic is due at Havre on July 18, and the Olympic team will disembark there and entrain for Amsterdam, where they will be joined by Joe Wright, Jr., his father, and other Canadians who have gone over in advance of this party, YOURS FOR THE ASKING What do you like best on your summer vacation?
