EASY FOR PONIES Kingston, July 11--Kingston re- mained in the fight for second place in the C.O.B.L, when they defeated Peterboro at the Fair Grounds to- night by the score of 10 to 3 in one of the best games of the season. The game was featured by the spectacular work in the field and on the bases by Harold Buck, left fielder of the locals, Buck twice scored from second on infield outs, while in the field his work was outstanding. He raced half way across the outfield to snare Johnston's liner with his bare hand, and a little later pulled a sensational catch of Macdonald's fly, Fournier, who won from the Petes a week ago, went back tonight and pitched even better ball. He allowed only widely scattered hits, while his general work on the mound was im- proved, Macdonald, in his second senior start, was hit hard throughout Cherry leading with three singles and a double, It was Buck's sensational work on the sacks, however, that brought victory to the locals, Kingston goes to Peterboro on Saturday. They will now meet the CN.R, team, Quebec winners, at Montreal on Saturday. Brantford attacked from the start and Lyall | tested Fraser twice in quick succession, Fell was the next to try Fraser, but the goalkeeper saved, Ulster went to the other end and Grant, taking the ball to the goal-line, centred for Galloway to head into the net for the first goal, From the centre Brantford attack- ed and Eadie conceded a corner, which was cleared. Ulster went to the other end, and Graham tipping the ball past Nichol, went forward and sent into the net out of the reach of the goalkeeper for the sec- ond goal, The Blues again attacked from the centre and the ball was sent into the Ulster goal several times, but there was always some one in the way to save, From a free Grant sent across the Brantford goal and Moir meeting the ball sent into the far side of the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance. 'Hagen was given the ball and run- ning close in passed to Galloway, who put the ball over the har, Half time arrived with Ulster leading by 3 goals to 0. In the second half Ulster attacked and Hagen sent the hall to Graham, who drove hard at Moore, but the goalkeeper saved, The Blues attack- ed and Rankin handled just outside the penalty area but Fell shot over the. bar, A splendid combined movement hy the Ulster went from McNeil to Hagen to Galloway and then to Gra- ham, who heat Moore with a light- ning-like shot. rantford were badly outclassed and from a freekick taken by Grant Graham headed into the net for the fifth goal, For the rest of the game the at- tack was confined to the Brantford end and only for a brief period could they get to the Ulster end of the ground, the game ending with Ul- ster attacking, Ulster team--Fraser, Eadie, Ran- kin, Grant, Williams, Clulow, MeNeil, Hagen, Graham, Galloway, Moir, Brantford team--Moore, Jackson, Nichol, Dickson, Baxter, George, Fraser; Aird, Fell Lyall, Smith. Leats Divide With Jersey Cats Collins Has Narrow Squeak in First Game and Leafs Win 3-2 ==Jess Doyle Batted Out Pitching the Leafs to a 3-2 sue- cess over the Jersey City team in the first game of yesterday's dou- ble-header, Rip Collins clicked oft his tenth win of the season against two defeats, The Jerseys plastered Jess Doyle with a 4-1 setback in the second half of the bargain bill, and it might have been worse but for the veteran's supporting cast, Jess was hit hard and finally fore ed out in the seventh, The game was lost at that stage, anyway. Collins had a real tussle, first with Sonny Horne, and then with Cliff Jackson after Horne vacated owing to a strained ankle, And the Jerseys were close to prying the victory away from the Texan in the ninth, and probably would have but for a bit of fanay fielding by Bucky Burke, aided and abetted by Kip himself, who cever- ed first while Alexander floundered around wondering what it was all about. Winning Run on Base There were two Gilhooley Cats on base with the tieing and winning runs, and two out, when shrewd Otis Lawry pulled a sizzler past Al- exander, but Burke, speeding over, came up with the ball and threw to Collins for the final out, At that, the game was more or less a gift for the Leafs, notwith- standing Collins' fine work on the mound, They scored three times in the first inning a mean trick on Sonny Horne, who also pitched ex- ceptionally clever ball the six in- nings he was out there, Jess Doyle was pummelled for twelve hits in the seven-inning game, and the twelve included three triples anda pair of doubles, and every blow yielded by the vet- eran was an honest-to-goodness shot, Paul Easterling gave Jess bril. liant support with four dificult catches, three of them on Manger, who likely thinks the ex-Detroiter has it in for him, In the third Easterling jumped high in the air to spear Manger's screeching liner with one hand, and in the fourth with Lawry on the far corner, through a triple that hit the foul line flag pole on top of the right. field bench and bounded back into the park, Ease made another spark- ling eatch on the Jersey second baseman, But it did not have anything on Bucky Burke's leaping grab of a hot drive by Calleran with three men on hase in the third, A foot higher and the smash would have been good for two runs, or more, The Jerseys scored a run in the opening session on hits by Lawry and Walsh, and Joe Rabbitt's aim- less return to the infield, Higgins' three-bagger and Calleran's single gave Gilhooley's men a tally in the seventh, . Manger"s double, a triple by Walsh and 'another two-decker off Head's hat raised the Cats' count to four, Don Songer went in at this stage and Doyle went out, nothing new for him and Smith and Higgins were retired to close the side. Song- er knocked down a wicked bounder by Higgins. The Leafs made eight hits off Henderson, former Oriole. Bedore's triple and Easterling's one-baser ac- counted for their lone run of the game in the first inning. A.Y.M.C. The Cardinals handed UAC. a fine trimming last night at Cowan Park when they hammered Merch's slants to win 20-7. : As a result the Cards are in sec- ond place with 4 wins and 2 defeats, while U.A.C. are now occupying fourth place with 3 wins and 3 losses. Merch's pitching was none too good, and on support was terrible. Magill pitched a fair game for the Cards and will improve, : Boneham was the Card's star, hit- ting a homer with three on and running into deep left to make a marvellous catch, The Cardinals were never headed after the third inning and from then on it was just a slaughter, A large crowd was on hand and although the game was ragged the fans seemed to enjoy it, Ce es wy. 3 ar pencer, If; koff, 2b; Crossmas, 3b; Boneham, : £; Tal Thomson, 1b; McKnight, Bowler, ef; Magill, p; W.
