Long Connection and Interesting Recollections HE FIRM of Alexander Buntin and Company was established in Hamilton, Ont,, September 25th, 1848 by Alexander Buntin, who came from Renton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, the voyage taking over two months on a sailing vessel known as the Aranga, as there were no steam ves- sels at that time. Mr, James Buntin, his brother, followed a year later, engaging in business in Hamilton with his 'brother Alexander Buntin, The firm's name then changed to James Buntin and Company, Mr, Alexander Buntin moving to take up his residence in Montreal where he be- cam y first paper manufacturer from ground wood, at Valleyfield, Quebec. The site of the original paper mill is still in existence today. In 1858 Mr. John Y. Reid, who had been in the groc- ery business in Hamilton, entered the Company, and later became Manager of Buntin Brothers who had established themselves in Toronto, being first situated on Yonge Street at the corner of Colborne Street, where the Bank of Hamilton Building now stands. A few years later George Boyd, whose wife was a sister of Alexander and James Buntin, came to Toronto and became a partner in the firm of Buntin Brothers which later traded under the name of Buntin, Reid Company. Mr, Alexander Buntin, Junior, who came to Toronto shortly after his father's death which occurred in March, (1891, took over the business which was then located on the south side of Wellington Street, west of Yonge Street and which was burnt out in Toronto's great fire in 1904, The firm then moving to its present location, |5 Colborne Street, where the activities of the oldest established Paper House in the country were carried on by Mr, Alexander Buntin, Junior, until his sudden death which occurred on December 11th, 1922, Following the death of the late Alexander Buntin, the business was sold by the Executors of the Estate to I'homas James Macabe of Toronto and President of the Company with whom Mr, Macabe has associated in the business Mr. George H. Allen as Vice-President and for- merly of Winnipeg and Montreal, being connected with the John Martin Paper Company and McFarlane, Son & * Hodgson Limited. The firm being recognized as the old- est established house in the trade still commands their leading position in the distribution of fine papers through- out Canada, " -- The Company have many in the organizationi whose identity and connection with it dates back over a period of thirty years, Mr. Robt. J.
