They have reference to the vast areas of sea growths, from which man-' kind may yet supply the needs of life. * On the ocean floor may lie man's future vegetable supply: There are deep sea fish of which he has never partaken. And sea growths hold in trust chemical substances of incalculable value and in illimitable quan- . tities. : Humanity will never learn to what ex- tent it can depend upon the sea for food un- til land production falls permanently behind consumption. There is where man some day may go of compulsion for his mineral and fuel supply. on WHY NOT? The Canadian patent office might follow the example of the British institute of pat- entees, which has issued a booklet telling in- ventors of a number of things the public has not, and weuld liké to have, It lists, among other things, a method of conveying speech directly and readably to paper, which would do away with the ne- cessity for stenographers; an economical cook stove; wireless television; a noiseless airplane .that can be managed safely; motor headlights that will penetrate fog and will not dazzle; road signs readable at night, and a pipe that can be easily cleaned. One might add to this list indefinitely. Why not invent: A sidewalk that will melt snow as fast as it falls upon it. Sheet music that will turn its own pages. A comfortable hat for men. A rain-proof crease for pants, A tobacco that tastes as good as it smells. A traffic-signal that will let you through and stop the man behind, An inexpensive overcoat that will last four years, Some real use for cabbage. You sit down to iron. June 27 Don't Delay! By Renrut/ BURGLAR FLEES AS DOOR 1S OPENED INTO "SACRED ROOM" Detroit, Mich,, June 27.--A bur- glar's demands early today forced Mr. and Mrs. John N, Eddy to une lock a 'sacred room' in their home at 283 Kitchener avenue, The room had heen locked since last Janu- ary when their child died and con- tained toys, the baby chair and other mementoes. The Eddys were awakened short- lv after 2 a.m. by the rays of a flashlight. A smartly dressed bur glar ordered Mr. Eddy from the bed and directed him to show him where "all the money in the house" was located, Mr. Eddy gave him $10, telling the prowler it was all he had. Who's in that next room?" the prowler demanded. "No one," the Eddys replied. - Despite their protests the bur- glar forced Eddy, at the point of a gun, to open the door of the locked room, He glanced in, saw the toys, chair and other belongings of a child and realizing whit they were, closed the door and fled down the stairs to the street. A VOICE FROM INDIA (Montreal Star) Catherine Mayo's lurid picture of life in India, as presented in her book, "Mother India," has been re- futed by many .eminent authorities. One more voice, and that a signifi- cant one, has now been added to the list. The Rev. E. L. Gunasek- eramahathmaya, a native Christian clergyman, in an address before the Kiwanis Club recently, was invit- ed to express his opinion about the book, and he did so in no uncertain terms. He told his audience that Miss Mayo had dragged up the sewers of India, that what she said applied to about one in a thousand, USE FLY-TOX END MOSQUITO TORMENT In a few minutes' time the en- tire home can be freed of mosqui- toes. Wity an improved FLY-TOX Hand Sprayer, spray FLY-TOX di- rectly toward the ceiling, also on the draperies, in the closets and on the screens. It will not leave a stain on the most delicate of wall- papers, hangings or fabrics. Spray upwards until al] parts of the room are filled with the finely atomized spray. Within a few minutes all the mosquitoes in the room will be dead, regardless of whether the windows and doors are open or closed. In addition to being stain- less, FLY-TOX is fragrant, is ahso- lutely harmless to people hut sure death to all household insects, Every bottle guaranteed.--Adv. and that shé was about one per cent correct. . This tallies with up-to-date evi- dence adduced by other critics of Miss Mayo's work. The more one considers it, the more regrettable does it seem that the author used statistics twenty and thirty years old to represent conditions today, Fortunately, however, the evil in- fluence of her work is fast being dissipated and it will soon be rele- gated to the limbo of completely discredited evidence. A RECORD-BREAKER. (Hamilton Herald) Belfast 1s once more going to break a record and with another Oceanic. The first was hailt and made her first voyage to New York in 1871. She was a small boat In comparison with later vesesls, ana only 400 feet long and 7.240 tons displacement. Her namesake of 1899 was the first steamer to ex- ceed 415,000 tons, being 17,274, ana 700 feet long. Now the third Oceanic is to be built on the gi- gantic scale of a length over 1,000 feet and a tonnage of 60,000. It will be four years before she is ready, but her dimensions Indicate that the day of big vessels is not considered to be over. There must be sound judgment and excellent reasons before any firm would ven- ture $30,000,000 in one boat. The first Oceanic was remarkable in in- troducing what has since been known as the "Belfast bottom." and it has become a feature of all subsequent ghip-building The growth in horsepower is remark- able, the first Oceanic having 2.- 000, the second 29,000, and the proposed vessel more than doubl- ing this.. HOBBLED MONEY (From Collier's) Speed un social betterment. That is the rule laid down hy Julius Rosenwald of Chicago, who has es- tablished a foundation of $20,000,- 000, to be administered by trus- tees. Within twenty-five years after he is dead all of the principal, as well as the income from it, must have been used to aid projects that promise greater comfort and in- creased happiness for the people. Permanent endowments for hoard purposes, such as education, are desirable and will continue to exist. But it is unwise, as so many well-intentioned benefactors have done, to put go many hobbles on funds that their use, in promptly serving intelligent vision, is cur- tailed drastically. A doctor In a New England vil- lage provided in his will that an- moked and Pacific Coast to Atlantic by every age enjoyed. from LLU nd every class nually there should be available to the residents one mile of shirt- ing flannel without cost to them. That was two generations ago. Now much of the free flannel goes" begging. Petticoats and chest pro- tectors are not the vogue they once were. . ---- The doctor couldn't forsee the development of rayon or the reign of silk. He thought the styles, cus- toms and needs of his own period were permanent, Don't discount the opportunities for making money perform human- itarian tasks today. mam --n ------ A STOCKS S. F.
