(142a) » For Sale or Rent Wanted COURTESY EARNS COURTESY, IS VIEW OF THIS OBSERVER Prominent Automobile Maker Gives Impressions of the Times TIPS FOR DRIVERS The Inconsiderate Motorist Brings Down Wrath on All Other Drivers "As the number of motor cars in- creases, so does the opportunity for good manners in motoring," a prom- ment automobile maker declares. "After all, the streets and high- ways belong to everybody, and no one who is at all considerate of oth- ers' rights will forget this. "Most lapses from the golden rule of courtesy are due to thoughtless- ness, rather than deliberate selfish- ness--bhut thoughtlessness and auto- mobile driving are a bad combina- tion, Always Practice Crortesy "The man whose car waits for five minutes at an intersection, which has no traffic semaphore, for a chance to cut across the street, wonders why none of the scores or hundreds of motorists will hesitate long enough to make a gap for him to go across. But this same man, were he in the stream of traffic, probably would not stop. "Those who expect courtesy should themselves be courteous, Every day motorists have occasions to practice courtesy, by thinking of the other fellow. "In almost every city there are some streets so heavily travelled dur- ing the morning and evening rush hours that the people who reside on the streets have difficulty getting in and out of their drives because pass- ing motorists are so supremely in- different, Watch Little Things "When one stops to consider it, courtesy is vital today in motoring. The courteous driver will not weave in and out on narrow streets, forc- ing other motorists to give ground to avoid collision, or slip in between two cars, so as to compel the man behind to use his brakes for safety. "It is not courteous to take corn- ers swiftly, or swing wide, so that approaching drivers, especially wo- men, are forced to slow down, or even be momentarily alarmed. "When cars are parked and space is limited, the considerate motorist will give thought to those who will come after him and will not park carelessly so as to waste space. Abuse of the Horn "A special chapter might be writ- ten on the courtesy of the horn. The horn is a safety signal--not a medium for the expression of impatience when traffic is delayed by a stalled motor a few cars ahead. The horn is not a door bell to summon friends whom one is picking up to go to dinner or for a drive. In every block there are sensitive, nervous, and sick people, who have a right to more consideration than is shown by repeated, full length, prolonged soundings of the horn. "The merit of the modern automo- bile horn is its carrying power and distinct tone. A very gentle touch of the horn button will warn pedes- trians quite as effectively as a blast that paralyzes them with fright. Pedestrians have rights, too,--the right to cross at intersections with- out -waiting five or ten minutes: the right to be warned courteously if warning is needed at all. 4 "There arc some people who con- tend that automobile horns should be prohibited and the burden of caution placed on the motorist. This is an extreme view, but the reasons that lead to it are plain enough--the abuse of the horn. is Dev, "It isthe inconsiderate, discour- teous motorist who brings down the wrath of public opinion on all motor- ists. Men and women who are for- tunate enough to own cars, but who have no motoring manners, are to blame for all the argument which breaks forth and threatens to cmact itself into speed laws of ten miles an hour and higher automobile license fees. "Even the habitually discourteous motorist suffers and resents the self- ! FOR SALE OR RENT--BRICK veneer house. Also good building lots. Apply 64 Park Rd. N {14lc) Oshawa Daily Tim-s.
