The principals are prominent farmers on the Twelfth Line of Sunnidale Township, living across the road from one another and life- long friends until 1925, when a dis- pute arose over a 50-cent gatepost which Armstrong had put out on the highway, and which was taken by McArthur's hired man ana used. Both the Dbminion and provincial Governinents will be memoralized as to the necessity for such a road. s By an all-weather road, reso- lutions committee meant an asphalt highway, Harry Cater, Mayor of Brandon and chairman, said. It was estimated that $50,000,000 raised in a five-year period, would be re- quired, The money would be al- located to population rather than to mileage, Mr. Cater said, for 't was realized that in certain sec- tions of the. west there were very few people to hear the cost of the proposition. It was pointed out by delegates who favored the resolution that the present coast-to-coast gravel highway was practically complgted, with the exception of a small atretch in eastern Manitoba. Hon. Lucien Cannon, Solicitor- General, sailed yesterday for Loss don to represent the Government. One case is as to the ownership of precious metals in the former lands of the Hudson Bay Company while the other hinges on the ques- tion, whether a company federany incorporated is subject to any regu~ lative restriction by a provincial government. The Hudson's Bay Company HON. LUCIEN CANNON TO 2 REPRESENT CANADA IN ne STR § PRIVY COUNCIL CASES claimed that the surrender of its lands did mot involve any precious metals which they contained but on a reference to the Supreme Court here the unanimous judgment was adverse to this contention. Owuer- ship was found to be in the Crown. The company is mow carrying the case to the Privy Council. The company shares case arose in Manitoba. Both the provincial and federal supreme courts have held that a province cannot place restrictions on the sale of shares of a Dominion incorporated com- pany. This case also will be ar- gued next month. KING IS PROUD TO BE SPAIN'S BEST FARMER Alfonso XIII. is without doubt the best sportsman, and, accords ing to his own expression, the fore- most farmer in Spain, writes Jean De Ganot, of the United Press. I'he King's favorite sport is rid- ing. He is such an excellent horse- man that those who have had to follow him on horseback sometimes have difficult experiences. To tell the truth, this amuses the King, and when he notices one of his companions showing signs of un- casiness in the saddle he selects the most difficult paths and jumps. The King prefers young and mettle- some mounts, bhecanse he knows he can master them rapidly. Thanks to his extraordinary qualities of horsemanship, the King has hecome a first-class polo player. Thos? who have watched him in action are-amazed by the kill of the royal rider. Seldom has a polo team including the King been beaten, no matter-how strong the opponents \s a result of. He com- bines daring with complete calm- ness and presence of mind, and drives at fantastic speeds. When the King drives all precautions are taken, and the cars he uses always are carefully prepared and overs hauled before he starts en any trip. Sixty to 70 miles an hour is nothing extraordinary for a king. A demonstration of his speed driv- ing was given in September of 1926, when he drove at night from San Sebastian to Madrid. A revolt among discontented artillery offi- cers had started, and martial law had been decreed, and the King understood that his immediate presence in Madrid was of the ut- most necessity to prevent a conflict which might extend throughout the country if he did not inter- vene. He started at midnight, and, driving most of the time himself, arrived in Madrid, 400 miles away, the next morning over a road which was partly mountainous. Refusing to take any rest, Alfonso began important conversatibns which re- sulted in the surrender of rebels during the afternoon.
