PAGE EIGHT Central League Players I ---- Are Showiug Real Form Pitchers Are Working Hard While the Infield is Fast Whipping Into Shape -- Batting Practices Show Players Already Have Got Their Eye on the Ball The local senior C.0.A.B.L. squad is coming along in good style, and a number of the candidates are showing signs of real form. One thing that is deserving of favorable comment is the systematic way in which Mgr. Walt. Schultz and Coach Stan. Burgoyne are putting the boys through thelr paces. Plenty of batting practice seems to be the strong point with both the manager and the coach and the result is that the boys are getting their eyes on the ball, Strong hit- ting wins ball games, and practice makes perfect. Infield practices are being held regularly, and the inner woixs crowd, despite the adverse condi- tion of the infield, are showing nice form, also the different shifts that are being worked out are go- ing to combine into a remarkable strong defensive infield for the Motors clan, There is no denying that there is plenty of real good material and the "Big Sixes" are going to have an infield that will be hard to get past. The outer gardeners are also acting in a whole-hearted manner, and are cavorting around gobbling up the high spirals in a fairly advanced way.- The management is going to be kept busy picking their outfield players, on the form some are showing right now. The big hyrling squad is coming right along too and in another few days will be starting to disp the old pill up in mid-season form, while the big mitt artists are kept busy as bees ducking around between pitchers' warm-ups, infield work- outs and batting practice. Today will see the hoys all out having another hang-up work out at Alexander Park, and fans will he well advised to drop up that way and look over the squad in action. The gang are all "giving their best efforts to Manager Schultz and Coach Burgoyne, who are hoth more than pleased with the efforts of the squad to date. ALEXANDER PITCHES CARDS TO VICTORY OVER PHILLIES St. Louls, May 11.---The Phillies outhatted the Cardinals here today, but Grover Cleveland Alexander had' control when control was necessary and the Cards made a clean sweep of their four game series by winning 3 to 2. Alex- ander had nine strikeouts, The winning run came in the eighth when Sweetland walker three men and Frisch sprinted home on Mancusgo's sacrifice fly Lo short centre. i Jimmy Wilson, veteran catcher, was taken out alter the second inning when he hecaiue he property of the Cardinals in a trade involving several players Wilson, who replaced Dob OQ Far- rell, traded yesterday to the Gjants, will catch tomorrow tor MceKeci- nie's team. WISNER DRIVEN FROM BOX WHEN BISONS BEAT KEYS Buffalo, N.Y., May 11.--The Buffalo Bisons bombarded Jack Wisner, former Rochester heaven from the mound in five innings here today and a consequence easily defeated the Reading Keys, 10 to 7. The trailers made it look a as lit close in the ninth when they | staged a four-run rally and forced Lefty Williams, good ball to'retire and allow Jack Hollingsworth to retire the final batsman. The Cats supported "Sonny' Horne, their good right hander, cleverly, if not .sensationally, and tory by three Toronto errors, two of the misplays directly figuring in the scoring. Horne was stingy with hits in the pinches, though he allowed one more than Johnny Prudhomme yielded to the Cats. He pulled out of ticklish spots in the seventh and ninth, the Leafs filling the bases on each occasion and scoring but one run. Walsh to the Rescue Then Jimmy Walsh came to Horne's rescue in the fourth, With Jacobson on base through a single, Sheedy pelted the ball to left for what appeared a sure triple, only to have Walsh race across and grab the ball with his gloved hand. The catch saved one run at least and a possible two. Sheedy and Alexander opened the seventh with .singles and Phillips walked to populate all cor- ners with none down, the result of it all being one run, Burke struck out. Cote was an infield out, Sheedy crossing the plate, and Prudhomme ended the threat with a fly to Gilhooley. ' Another real chance came in the ninth, Alexander drew a base on balls: while Phillips and Burke each cut loese a single, putting three men on base and again with none out, Satterfield went in to pinch hit for Cote and whiffed, Styles, for Prudhomme, fouled "to Devine, Rabbitt skied to centre, and the ball game was over, So much for the Leafs' offensive strength. BELANGER OUTPOINTS GRANDE IN CLEVER CONTEST AT ARENA Toronto, May 12--It was a great night for the local boys at the Sham- rock Club's show at the Arena Gar- dens last night ,four of the five en- gaged in the actiyities coming down in front and while there was. consid- erable disagreement among the spec- tators of Frenchy Belanger in the ten-round main bout and Cliff Gra- ham in his six-round setto both these lads deserved to come down in front. Graham's margin was a clean-cut affair and it was the rousing finish of Lindhardt of Buffalo against Gra- ham that caused quite a number of the fans to think that the visitor de- served a draw at least, Belanger, while not exactly lucky to get the decision over Frisco Grande, the Fili- pino from New York, was not nearly as impressive as in his recent win over Clovis Durand and at times had great difficulty in solving the vyisit- or's awkward but at the same time flashy style. Grande might have ob- tained the dicision but he pullifed quite. 2a number of his . points by holding. Another cause for Belan- ger's poor showingbecause it was a disappointmicnt to his friends, was his overly cautious defensive cam- paign and he continually permitted the Filipino to do the lcading. Grande js clever, fast with both hands apd feet and uses his arnfs a lot, but his punches carry little power behind them, and most of his blows came at the end of Jong full-arm swings which looked better than they really were. He crowded Belanger's right most of the time, and the local lad never bad a chance to land his right on the chin, although he caught the target several times with his left. The Canadian champion handed out considerable punishment to the body when he was not tied up by Grande's holding tactics, and the dusky fly- Weight showed an even darker tinge on his ribs at the conclusion of the bout than he did when he started. Belanger had the old cut above x: cye re-opened, but it did not bot him to any appreciable extent.
