PAGE TEN LES Toronto, May 11.--Flash Gil hooley came back home yeysterday as manager of the Jersey City Black Cats, and treated with scorn. the Leafs' reputation of being able 'to knock all opponents lopsided. The Leafs' record of taking four straight from Newark and seven out of eight games played with the Orioles did not mean a thing to Gil and his athletes as they early went to work on their task of hum- bling the league leaders. The Cats "took" the House of O'Hara in the first game of the series as neatly as you pleased by the score of 7 to 5, and Gilhooley, Lawry, Devine and Jimmy Walsh, all former To- ronto players, had their little say in the unexpected defeat of the local hired help, Milburn G, Shoffner, southpaw pitcher for the Gilhooley team was the man, however, who really stood between the Leafs and victory, Shoffner, not only pitched the style of ball that generally wins games but he wielded the bat with much gusto, Shofiner stole Alexander's thun- der in the seventh inning by shoot- ing the ball over the right-field bar- rier for a homer. And as Joe Man- ger happened to be on base at the time the wallop was delivered, it meant two runs, the margin that divided the teams at the finish, But that wasn't all that Mr, Shoffner did with the stick during the hazy afternoon, With Devine on the runway in the ninth the Cats' sorrell topped pitcher sliced the ball to right-field and "Jack" Rabbitt very kindly allowed it to bounce past him while the two grey clad men pounded around the cor- ners to the pay off station, Jess Doyle, in bumping into his second defeat of the season, did not pitch badly, though the Cats hit him hard enough if not always safely. He saw a three-run lead that the Cats had gained in the first wiped out in the second greatly through his own efforts with the bat when his double with three men on base drove them all home, He had the satisfaction of seeing his no-run pitching from the first inning to the seventh rewarded by his associates taking advantage in the sixth of two errors by Georgie Martin, Jersey City shortstop, and scoring once to give them the lead. Then came Manger's single in the seventh and Shoffner's homer to take the joy out of life. But just®as costly were the errors by Sheedy and Rabbitt in the ninth to help the Cats on their way,to another pair of runs. Col, Lindbergh is to be taught how to navigate, He seems to huve done, pretty well, however, without that knowledge.--Peterboro' Exam- ner, » Lawn Grass Seed One of our + Specialties Hogg & Lytle LIMITED | B4 Church St, Phone 203 Jersey City| "-- INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE Won Lost P.C. Sir Arthur is proprmetor of the Portsmouth Times series of weekly newspapers, founder of the Southern Daily Mail and a fellow of the Institute of Journalists, One married daughter of Sir Arthur and Mrs, Holbrook is in the United States and could not attend the wedding celebration, Speaking to a reporter Sir Ar- thur said: "In these days people are against large families. They don't realize the pleasure which a man in his older days derives from a large family--if they have been brought up properly. It is a tre- mendous recompense to find they are doing well in the world." Sir Arthur is Conservative, mem- act as a sl ber for the Basingstoke Division of Hampshire, for which he was first, elected in 1920. Among his six sons with him was Lieutenant-Com- mander Norman Douglas Holbrook, who won the V.C. in the Darda- nelles, He was in command of sub- marine B 11, and dived under five rows of mines and torpedoed a Turkish battleship. BIG CAR MENACE GROWING SERIOUS London, May 10.--*"The charge that he drivers of big cars are de- veloping the habit of crowding small cars into the ditches appears to be so well substantiated that some action will have to he taken with regard to it," says the Daily News and Westminster Gazette in an editorial dealing with the sub- ject of "Manners on the Roads." The paper says: "The habit is not only unpleas- ant: it is distinctly dangerous; and as the number of small cars is con- stantly increasing it will be wiser to deal with the trouble before it bas developed into some unhappy accidents. The proper authorities to take action are those of the Automobile Association. The Asso- ciation claims to eontrol dangerous driving through their patrols; but the existence of the evil suggests that a more vigorous policy is need- ed. If the patrols reported some of the incidents and the Association took action upon them the trou- ble would probably pass." PETTY FINED AND SUSPENDED Chicago.
