\ 1HE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, MONDAY. APRIL 30, 1928 1. 0. ROCKEFELLER PROPOSED SENDING SERUM T0: QUEBEC Lindbergh Mercy Flight Was Suggested By Institute WIRES PRODUCED Was Informed By Doctor No Serum Available in Quebec New York, April 30.-The idea of sending serum to Quebec in an effort to save the life of Floyd Ben- nett had its inception with John D. Rockefeller, Jr., but the plan to have Col. Charles A, Lindbergh fly to Quebec with it was the sug- gestion of Arthur Woods, connect- ed with Rockafellsr enterprises, it was revealed hers. Spokesmen for Rockefeller told of the incident while from Rocke- feller's office copies were given out of a telegram Rockefeller had sent to the superintendent of the Jeffrey Hale Hospital, Quebec, and of a Dr. Alvan L, Barach, specialist whe attended Bennett, . Rockefeller's telegram to the hospital superintendent gave no- tice of Lindbergh's departure with the serum, and placed the facilities of the Rockefeller Institute in New York at the disposal of the Quebec physicians, Dr, Barach's letter to Rockefel- Jer said that 'there was no serum available in the City of Quebec," although "I was later informed that serum could be had in Mont- real." He said Lindbergh did * a very real service in supplying us with serum,' A spokesman for Rockefeller said that on April 24 Rockefeller, who greatly admired Bennett, tele- phoned Dr, Simon Flexner, of the Rockefeller Institute, asking if there were not something the insti- tute could do for Bennett, Phoned Barach Thereupon a member of the insti- tute's staff telephoned Dr, Barach, who had been sent from New York to attend Bennett, asking if any- thing could be done to aid him, Dr, Barach replied he would like to have serum for types Nos, 1 and 2 pneumonia, ~ Arrangements were made for a representative of the institute to leave by train for Montreal that night, Col, Woods then suggested that Lindbergh probably would be glad to fly to Quebec with the serum and he communicated with the Guggenheim Foundation, arrang- ing for Lindbergh's flight, Lind- 'bergh left immediately and that night the Rockefeller Institute also sent a representative by train with additional serum, in case Lindbergh should be delayed. Rockefeller's telegram to the superintendent of the Jeffrey Hale Hospital, Quebec, read: "Col, Lindbergh with Appleget of my office bringing serum from Rockefeller Institute desired by Dr. Barach left at 3 this afternoon .in fast Government airplane for Mont- real where Colonel hopes to arrive to enable Appleget to catch 7 o'clock train this evening to Que- bec, Failing to make this connec- tion Appleget will leave Montreal immediately by motor or special train, Chorley leaving here on evening train for Quebec with dup- licate serum to insure arrival if Lindbergh delayed. Rockefeller Institute are at your disposal, You have only to tele- phone or wire, Profoundly grate- ful Bennett is in such competent bands and feel confident his life will be saved if it lies within power of medical skill," Dr, 'Barach replied: Appreciated Help "I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the help which you gave us in the attempt to save Mr. Bennett. Col Lindbergh did a very real service in supplying us with gerum, inasmuch as we would have administered type one or type two serum if pneumonia had been due | to either organism. Type three | serum is still in the experimental | stage and has not proven to be of any clinical value. "When you offered to send me serum, I was very glad to accept it, as I knew that the New Yori City Department of Health, under the direction of Dr Park, had de- veloped this year a type two serum (refined either by Felton at Har vard or Banzhaff at the New York City Health Department.) -- This has many advantages over thai available in other quarters. "There was no serum aval in the City of Quebec. I was in = that serum could be had in b ontreal, but I was particularly xious to get the typ two serum m the New York City Depart ment of Health. I wish to thank you again and to express by appre- ciation to Col. Lindberge 'for his flight. Your services, had his pueumonia turned out to be due to type one or type two pneumo- coccus, might have been of very real value." A.DANGEROUS GAME (London Sunday Express) The body of Major Seagrave's car is exactly similar to the fuse- lage of Flight-Lieutenant Kinkead's ill-fated seaplane. Major Seagrave was sitting in the dummy of his body the other day and he realised that when so seat- ed it was impossible to see the cround, and Major Seagrave is mun- der the impression that Lieutenant Kinkead dived into the water wthout realis- ing that he was so close to it. i M = # ® " - m " " oy mn " = "= " = ® ' letter received by Rockefeller from " mu " Re} . = .
