The pro- ceeds amounted to about $17. Miss Susie Bray has rented Mr. MeoLaren's house in the village and has taken possession. We are pleased to have her with us again. Miss Hazel Grose, of Toronto, fs visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs, A, J. Grose, uite a number from here at- tended Mr. White's sale at Pros- pect last week. Van- nest, of Oshawa, spent the holiday with her daughter, Mrs, Oliver Lane, The Ladies' Aid held their anm- nual Easter tea in the church hase- ment on Monday night when a goodly number were present to partake of the dainties that the members of the Ald know so well how to prepare. After the supper a miscellaneous program was en- joyed, after which, sides were chosen and an old time spelling mateh was held, which provoked much merriment as some of the contestants evidently are getting rather dusty with their *Speller." Swayne preached a very appropriate Easter sermon here Sunday afternoon, During the service seven new communicants were added to the church roll, twa by certificate and five by profes- sion of faith. Owing ta the Sacra- ment services at Raglan and Pros- pect next Sabbath there will be no service here except Sunday School at the usual hour, a quarter to two. The members of the hockey team here spent a pleasant time at the home of Messrs. Mark and Jim Duff last Wednesday when they entertained the Ashburn-Myrtle hockey boys. Misses Chisholm, of Toronto, spent the holiday with their grand parents, Mr, and Mrs. Robert Chis- holm, Messrs. Reid and Erle Cook visit- ed over the holiday with relatives in Toronto, HAMPTON Hampton, April 9.--Migs Nancy Johns, of Toronto, is spending the Easter holidays with her mother and sister here, Mr. Frank and Miss Winnie Cry- derman, Mr. Albert Allin, of Tor- onto, at A, B. Cryderman's, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Wallace spent a couple of days in Toronto last week, Miss B. Wallace and lady friend returned with them for the Easter holidays. Good Friday evening's service In chapge of the pastor, was well at- tended. Mr, T, Salter conducted a song service from Alexander's song sheets, Rev, J. R. Trumpour, of Tyrone, gave a fing address on "The Passion Play.""" Mr. and Mrs, A. B. Cryderman contributed . an appropriate duet and Mr. Bick closed the meeting with prayer. Easter services on Sunday were well attended, considering the con- dition of the roads. The Women's Institute met at the home of Mrs. Rev, R. Bick on ence of Pictures," this was follow- ed by the roll call, which was re- sponded to by "Gardem Hints." The meeting closed with the *"Inf- stitute Ode," after which the ladies were invited to the d:uing room for refreshments, ENFIELD Enfield, April 10.--Miss Myrtle Hobbs is visiting at home. Miss Verna Ormiston spent the week end at Oshawa. Miss Irene Bray visited at Mr. S. Bray's. Miss Evelyn Stinson is visiting at Pontypool. Mr, Wallace and Miss Elizabeth Pascoe visited at Solina. The ladies of the Aid held their meeting for the month of April at thie home of Mrs, Will Smith, In spite of heavy roads a large number were present. A most in. teresting program was rendered. Mrs. Russell Ormiston sang a beau- tiful Easter solo, and Misses Ruby Smith and Dorothy Pascoe gave ex- cellent Easter readings. The usual social hour was spent when the hostess served lunch, Congratulations to Miss Helen Pascoe on abtaining honors on her Easter examinations at the Oshawa Collegiate. There was a very poor showing of fashions at the dress parade on the walk here on Easter Sunday The weather seemed rather un- suitable, according to the reports of some of the would-be paraders. Some spring flowers were gath- ered in the woods here last Satur- day, A sure sign of spring, SOLINA Solina, April 9.--Mr, and Mrs. S. BH. Werry spent Saturday with Grandma Shortt, at Courtice. Miss Lena Taylor at Rey, C. W. Barrett, Stirling, Mrs, J, J. J, McKessock's, The young people who put on the play entitled "What Doth it Profit," enjoyed a hanquet in Solina hall on Wednesday night, April 4, The players and thelr friends to the number of thirty-five enjoyed the banquet. The long tables were loaded down with all the delicacies of the season, such as cold bam, pickles, jelly, salads, bread and | butter, coffee, ice cream and cake, After all were satisfied a very en- joyable social time was spent with music and games. In the afternoon at Sunday School session, be- sides the usual lesson period, Miss Florence Courtice gave an Easter reading and Miss Vera Werry sang a pretty spring song. In the even- ing the service was held in No. 8 school house and the room was filled to its capacity. Rev. H. J. Stainton preached another sermon on his series of "What Shall 1 Do to Be Saved." A solo was nicely sung by Mrs. Rev. Stainton. Miss Lyla Osborne, Toromto, im her usual entertaining manner, gave a most interesting Easter story which was enjoyed by all present. A pretty chorus by twelve boys of No. 8 school was splendidly rendered, Miss Marion Trevail accompanying them on the plano. Miss Vera Vanstone, Whitby, spent a few days with Miss Mabelle Walters. Last week the weather being much warmer, caused & breaking up of the roads and it was & com- mon occurrence to see & car stuck deep in the mud. This week winter came again and the cars are travel- ing on again. Our pastor, Rev. H. J. Stainton is sporting & mew "Pontiac," ZION Zion, April 9.--Mr. and Mrs, J. E. Smith, of Orangeville and cou- sin, Mr. Lew Smith, of Brantford, were Easter guests of Mrs. Smith's sister, Mrs. W. McMaster, Mr. Earl Kellough spent Easter with his brother, J. Y. Kellough, of Port Hope. Mr, Arnold Vermer is spending the holidays with his parents at Clinton, Mrs. R. L. Richards, Oshawa, with Mrs. J. W. Balson, for the Easter week. Miss Audrey Ayre is spending a few days in Oshawa with relatives. Parties are at an end now, Mr. and Mrs. P. Murphy entertained last Tuesday evening, when eight tables of "Lost Heir" were played and Mrs. Thornton won a beautiful glass cream and sugar set and Mr, Russel Stainton a pair of nice socks, Mr, and Mrs. McMaster guessed the highest number of peas in a bottle and each received stationery. A splendid lunch was served and all had a pleasant time. Wednesday night the neighhor- hood turned out to congratulate .r, Walter Vivian and bride, nee Miss Stephenson, of Courtice, at their home on Mr. A. Balson read an address and Mr. Frank Pascoe presented the newly weds with a lovely mantel clock. Mr, Vivian replied' very nicely. After which games and dancing was indulged in and a splendid lunch served by the ladies, We welcome Mrs. Vi- vian to our community and churen. Thursday evening the concert was held by the young boys and girls' classes and a very good crowd turned out considering the condition 'of the roads. Opening ---- number, piano solo, Miss Stanley Chant, followed by a patriotic chorus by the combined classes and teachers. Mrs. Wm. Fice and Miss Annie McMaster. Two solos with encores by Mrs. Thos. Martin. Two numbers by the male quartette with encores. Two readings by Miss Ruth Fice with encores. One reading by Miss Pearl veach and encore. Plano solos by Miss Mc- Master and two short plays by the pupils as well, put on. The pro- ceeds amounted to $11. Friday morning Mr. Alex Fisher was cutting shingles in his woods with a gasoline outfit and caught his right hand in some way and severed the tops of his fingers and was taken to Bowmanville hospital. At time of writing his condition is favorable. It is just three years ago that he lost all the fingers on his left hand when cutting chaff, leaving his thumb and a small plece of his littlé finger. Hope nothing serious sets in. Mr. E. Wilbur has engaged Allan Snowden for the summer, Spring was knocked in the head for a few days on Sunday, and it was a treat to get out on frozen roads again. The fall wheat and seeds have Ricked up wonderfully the last week. THORNTON'S CORNERS Thornton's Corners, April 9.-- Mr. and Mrs. J. Sully and family motored to Toronto on Good Fri- daay to visit relatives. Mr, F. BE. French and family leave this week for Oshawa, where they intend to reside for the fu- ture. Mr, French has been a life long resident in this neighborhood. Mrs. French was for many years a faithful worker in the Sunday School and the Ladies' Ald. All are very sorry to see them leave and we wish them much happiness in their new home, The side roads are in a very bad condition this spring. The worst they have been for many years and some have been almost impassable. Many cars and trucks have been stuck fast and had to he left over night before they could be dug out, It will take a great deal of work aand gravel to put the roads in good shape again. Mr. and Mrs. J. Luke entertain- ed about seventy guests last Thurs- day evening from Toronto, Whithy and some of the neighbors. An or- chestra was in attendance and the evening was spent in dancing. Mr. Bick preached a splendid sermon on "The Resurrection." It is a sure sign that spring is here as there were h eds of frogs joining the spring chorus on Saturday. Miss Margaret McKessock at home for the past week. On Wednesday eyening some friends of Mr. R. J. McKessock met at their home and celebrated with them the 20th anniversary of the wedding day. After the guests bad all assembled they were pre- sented by those present with choice silver gifts. COURTICE Courtice, April 10.--Miss Lyla Osborne, Toronto, is spending the Easter holidays at home. Mr. Walter Saider, Brantford, was at Mr. W. H. Nichols' over the week end. Mr. S. 8. Brooks was in Toronto with his daughter, Mrs. Marshall Soules, Sunday. Mrs. 8S. 8. Brooks has gone to Detroit to wisit her daughter, Mrs. Hugh Fitzsimmons. The services on Sunday were well attended considering roads and weather. In the morning the pas- tor, Rey. H. J. Stainton, preached an excellent sermon from the text "Master, Carest Thou Net That We Perish." The choir rendered splendid music, singing two Easter anthems and Mrs. G. F.
