uring the summer months, where- the contestant throws stones at » rock set on top of a flat base, and then attempts to retrieve the thrown stone without tagged by a "keeper", was probably ome of the first types of bowling known, and is perhaps ome of the oldest games in the world. From this crude game, believed to have been indulged in by the cave men centuries ago, has grown a pastime which represents an investment of millions of dollars on this conti- pent. How many people in Can- ada indulge in indoor bowling is not known definitely, but a quar- ter of a million would be av ery conservative estimate. In early days, the game was a crude affair, played on any avail- able space, and with stones, often in their natural and lcpsided forms, were used in place of balls, and Strutt, in his "Sports and Pas- times of the People of England," says that the inconvenience of the bumpy, open greens suggested the idea of more level wooden alleys. Closh, Clossynge or Cloish are more recent forms of the ninepin game from which the modern bowl- ing developed. Curling, the Secot- tish pastime, and Skittles, which is peculiarly English and in which discs are used, are also said to have been progenitors of alley bowling, Wherever it came from and how it was adopted, bowling has a tremendous appeal to the masses, and alleys in Canada are crowded A Raw, Sore Throat gh 8 es Montreal, Que., is being interested in what is claimed is a mew industry in Canada--the manufacture of presses and metal working ma- chinery. tly it was announ- ced here t a branch of the firm of Joseph Rhodes and Sons of Wakefield, Eng., will be estab- lished a¢ Longueuil, a town across the river St. Lawrence from Mon- BRITISH TREASURY GETS HUGE GIFT Anonymous Donor Gives £2 500,000 to Reduce ; National Debt London, Feb. 9.--Although Winston Churchill's troubles in his effort to produce a "popular" budget are not yet ended, it is believed that he is beginning to see the silver lining.
