Phone 224, BRITAIN AGAIN SWEPT BY GALES Londoner Killed in Storm |® Lasting Only Fifteen Mnutes London, Jan. 24. Scarcely re- covered from floods that followed holiday bad weather, the British Isles were again swept by fierce gales to-day. Heavy rain, squalls and a sydden drop in temperature, with showstorms in Scotland, gave many places the wildest weather so far this winter. The wind at times approached 70 miles velocity, and reports to- night indicate that considerable damage has been dome by sudden squalls. Oe man was killed and a great deal of damage done by an ex- traordinary storm which struck London and lasted only fifteen minutes. A huge landslide block- ed the railway line between Har- lech and Llanbedrog, in Merion- ethshire, Wales. Another land- slide near. Crosskeys, in Mon- mouthshire, where part of a moun- tainslide collapsed, encroached on the railway there. More rain is predicted, and there are fears of renewed inun- dations. SENATOR HEFLIN DENOUNCES PRESS Washington, DD.., JaCn. 25.-- Threats to- bar some newspaper writers from the Senate press gal- lery were made to-day by Senator Heflin (Democrat, Alabama, in objecting to some of the accounts of his speech yesterday, in which he assailed his critics and renew- ed his attacks on the Roman Cath- olic Church and Governor Smith of New York. ' Obtaining recogition late in the day, the Alabama Senator confined his remarks to denials of state- ments written in stories published in two Washington newspapers. He referred to the writers as "li- ars' and "hickory nuts." Mr. Heflin denied published as- sertions that he had said he would quit the Democratic party if Al Smith were nominated for Presi- dent, He gave notice that he was going to ask the Senate to take some action against newspap- ermen "who lie about me," if he found any more of it, EYESIGHT SPECIALIST Bight is the most inestimable of all blessings, Few people have perfect eyes, Be sure of YOUR eyes NOW, 1516 wPHONE~-- 1516 Disney Block Opposite Post Office a ----" AL RSE.
