He has bee a member of Waterloo: Lodge, 1.0.0.F., Galt, for 53 years. --_------------ CURIOUS MISCHANCE REVEALS OLD FOREST Paris, Jan. 23. -- Subterranean gases released by workmen dig- ging a well near Coreno, Depart- ment if Isere, hav led to the dis- covery of a once well-known for- est which was destroyed by a gi- gantic landslide from Mount Saint Eynard in the year 1278. The workmen noticed gases bubbling up through the water, and began digging further to learn the source of the gas. They came upon massive tree trunks. roots and branches of enormous oak tres, now decompos- ing, and which is creating gas. Scientists examining the discover- fes' found records telling of these forest lands being completely cov- ered by the avalanche. STRATFORD BOARD OF HEALTH HOLDS INAUGURAL MEETING Stratford, Jan. 22--G. A. Me- Fadgen was elected Chairman of the Board of Health at the inaugu- ral meeting of that body this after- noon. The resignation of Miss E. Rieder as Public Health Nurse, was accepted and it was decided to dis- cuss with the City Council the question of a successor. The board will also take up with the Coun- cil the matter of putting veterinary inspection on a definite basis. The matter of the establishing of a health centre grouping all health activities under the Board of Health 'and the question. of an ele- vator at the Isolation Hospital will also be taken up with the Couneil at the same meeting, which will probably be 2 committee of the whole next week. HARBOR ACTIVITIES INCREASE AT QUEBEC Quebec, Jan, 24, -- 24. -- An increase of 45 per cent. in the general busi- ness activities of the Port of Que- bec during the shipping season of 1927 is shown in a statistical re-. pory of the Quebec Harbor Com- | misson. Arrivals and departures during the season included 446 liners and ocean-going steamers with a to- tal tonnage of 3,433,676 tons, and 311 coastal steamers, with a total tonnage of 415,786 toms. Inland trade vessels, including Great Lakes steamers, accounted for 392,624 toms, while the grand to- tal of departures and arrivals dur- ing the season was 1,079 vessels, with a net tonnage of 4,238,880, as compared with 997 arrivals and departures, with a ney tonnage of 4,047,406 during the preceding season Receipts and deliveries of grain showed an improvement over pre- vious year 9,750,000 bushels of passed through the eleva- ors, RECOGNITION FOR MEN WHO RESCUED COLLIE Detroit, Jan.- 23.--Official rec- ognition for bravery in risking their lives to save Lady, the young white collie that was marooned on an ice cake in Lake St' Clair for two days, will be given Em- mett Pentecos and Ralph Holmes, according to Fred G. DECREE LIMITING SUGAR CROP SIGNED BY CUBAN PRESIDENT Havana, Cuba, Jan. 23.--Presi- dent Machado yesterday signed a sugar decree, confirming the re- port o fthe National Sugar Defence Committeee, which recommended fixing the 1927-1928 sugar crop at 4,000,000 long tons. Under the decree 3,300,000 tons are for the United States, 150,000 tons are for home consumption, and the bal- ance is for export to other coun- tries than the United States.
