This might be attributed to the large mid way which took up considerable ground space. One good stroke of busi- ness was consumated in connection with the 1927 show, and that was that the midway rights were sold outright for $1,400, while in previ- ous years, but around $800 was (Continued from page 3) It has been the practice of the to use a great many bills. One man in referring to the building accommodation thought that something ought to be done to encourage the showing of swine in that Ontario County is coming to the fore in the raising and breeding of thoroughbred stock. He used the argument that the succeeding Major R. B. Smith, of Columbus, while Oscar Downey, of Myrtle Station, is the first vice president. The second vice presi. dent is F. T. Rowe, of Whitby. Expenses of the local fair have grown with the size of the affair according to a short summary given by the secretary, Charles P, Davis. In his talk, Mr, Davis men- tioned the fact that in 1910 a piece of three acts for grandstand en- tertainment was secured at a cost of one third of what was expended this year, Salaries for attendants, policemen, groundsmen, ticket sellers and ticket takers has also increased a tri-fold, During the past year there was over $1,300 given away in purse money, while the net receipts from the races, amounted to $1,470. It can be readily seen from these several instances that the show is not pay- ing itself, According to Mr, Davis, Oshawa people go to see the horse WINTER SPORTS IN THE HIGH. SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 1928 HICKMAN IS NOT INSANE Delay in Trial Will Not be Allowed by Prosecution; Shocking Confesion Los Angeles, Jan. 21.-- William Ed- ward Hickman has neither hereditary msanity nor praecox, Dr. Benjamin, Blank, county jail physician, an- nounced Tuesday in his report on blood tests of the kidnapper and murderer of Marion Parker. "Not the least sign of eithers type of insanity was disclosed by the test," said Dr. Blank. "The blood examinations conipletely bears out my earlier physical examination of Hickman, which shows no traces of such affliction." This is regarded, hy the prosecu tion as the final link in its chain of proof that Hickman is fully respons: ible mentally for his crime. Another blow to ** . defence followed when Deputy District Attorney, Forrest Murray, made public a telegram from Deputy James Costello, saying that the quest of Jerome Walsh, chief of Hickman's lawyers, for insanity de- positions had been a complete fail- ure. Costello, who accompanied Walsh as a representative of the state, said that Walsh had failed to get any depositions of the slightest value to the defence contention that Hickman is insane. : Despatches from Kansas City say- ing Walsh will seek a postponement of the trial were met with the an- nouncement that the prosecution will agree to no delay. This coupled with the freq anng t of Su- perior Court Judge Hardy that he will tolerate no delay' seems to in- sure the opening of the trial Janu- ary 25, as scheduled.
