Inquest Into Death of To "onto Child Whose Body 'Was Found in Ravine Af- 7ount of I Toronto, Jam. year-old Florence 4 - disappeared on th * Dec. 14 while on home on Birdsall Monica's Roman ! : ape to her death 3 skull inflicted by a blunt in- gtrument in the hands of a person Or persons unknown. The remains of the child were found. frozen in a creek which runs through Briar Hill and St. Cle- ment"s Avenues, North Toronto, on the afternoon of Dec. 26 by three schdol-girls, who stumbled over her glove-covered hand, while playing on the ice of the stream, and thus brough to an end a search in: which hundreds of men and boys had taken part. Verdict of Murder A verdict of murder was return- ed to Chief Coroner M. M. Craw- ford last night at the city Morgue, after Dr. E. R. Frankish had given the results of his autopsy. . Althougy there is no mention of it in the jury's finding, the child was also the victim of a terrible assault, ; Dr. Crawford expressed the inion that the case was one of the most unfortunate in his legthy experience, Thirteen witnesses were ex- amined before Dr, Frankish pre- sented the results of his autopsy, and definitely declared that death was due to a fractured skull, be- fore which the girl had been ter- ribly attacked. The witnesses gain included residents of the eality, who described the con- dition of the stream, the sudden pise in the water, and the freeze- up, and schoolmates, Sisters of the girl also testified, while Father Hugh Murray of St. Monica's Church disposed of the rumor that an unknown man who had called Murdered ls Verdict of Jury Fon him after the girl's disappear- ance might have had something to do with the crime. Father Murray quickly convinced the court that the man was a beggar, who later made a "touch" on another, which and' @ppear- mis girl 1 hool ! . He said he was gross ing : orth Avenue along a foot- path through a ravine when he met the child, the day following the disappearance. After a talk with his wife he reported the matter at once to the police. He did not see the child's face, and as a con- sequence was unable toddentify her through a picture, "I searched a portion of the ravine on the night my sister dis- appeared. I feel certain my sis- ter's body was not in the creek between Briar Hill and St. Cle- men's Avenues," said Michael Cos- tello, brother of the girl. "The water was only ankle deep. I used an electric bicycle lamp, which threw a strong light four feet square." Before Dr. Frankish gave his evidence Coroner Crawford order- ed the courtroom cleared. He be- lieved there would be evidence from' which the public could re- ceive no benefit. Ho asked the press to use every discretion and to consider the feelings of peuple who were interested in the case. "The external appearance of the body was that of a girl who had been in the water," said Dr. Frankish, "Her hair was covered with mud: The body was free of external violence, The lungs were normal, without any signs of water, There were no symptoms that the child had died from drowning, Clot of Blood "On the left side of the head there was a blood clot," he con- tinued, "Underneath the clot there was a fracture of the skull, My impression is that the girl did not live long after she suffered the THE OSHAWA DALY TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1928 fracture. The cause of death was fracture of the skull. There was cause, such as drowning. 120 ther fracture caused mmodiate un- consciousness." Dr, Frankish said that respira- tion had ceased before she went under water. "I doubt if the same result could have followed a fall,' he told Coroner Crawford. "The fracture was on the side of the head. I can- not conceive of it as the result of a fall. In a fit, the girl would have fallen limp. My impression is that bof d ent over the whole the fracture been different in character.* mination revealed the f{ the girl had been assaulted a frozen into the bed of the ereek. Dr. Frankish described the assault as "terrible." His opinion could be confirmed, he said, by the Grace Hospital pathologist, "Mother, have you got 8 penny for a poor old man?" : "Where 1s the poor man, my son?" Marie, Ont.,, Jan, 18. --On the theory that Charles Hill, 40, a woodsman, was murdered before a cord was placed about his neck to give the appearance of suicide. sheriffs' officers started an investigation immediately af- ter Hill's body was found in a de- serted shack about two miles west of Strongs. Hill's body was found in a kneeling position, with a piece of light twine about his neck. The other end of the twine was tied to a 'ten penny" nail, driven a half inch into the wall, about three and a half feet from the floor, The body was frozen and had been there for some time. One of the knees rested on'a mitten, The cap had fallen off, and lay just under the head on the floor. Hill was sitting on the calves of his legs, his head bowed down, His hands were clasped in front of his chest: The cord and nail were not suf- ficient to kill an ordinary man, it is believed. Had Hill jerked his head down enough to draw the cord tight as it was found the nail would have pulled out, the police state, STRATFORD SCHOOL BOARD ELECTS ABRAHAM CHAIRMAN Stratford. Jan. 18.--Alex. ON WATERWAY Speech From Throne Will Mention St. Lawrence Route ; Ottawa, Jan. 19.--While Pre- mier King told the Ontatio Associ ated Boards of Tra delegation that the St. Lawrence ficheme 1 one which will require the mros careful consideration, dt is fully anticipated that, in Speech from the Throne so! reference to the question Ww e made. Some line of policy is" be indicated. The latest information, subject, only confirms the recent forecast of the 'committee's find- ing but it is understood that, while negotiations with the United States are favored with regard to the in- ternational section, the wunderly- ing idea is that the greater part if not the whole cost of that section should be borne by the States. All the locks and main works on that section would be in United States territory. What may prove to be a factor of delay in this section is the di- vided opinion among the engineers as to the way of proceeding with the work, The dam would not be the largest in the world, but, it is said, that it would hold back five times as much water as any other dam ever built, Canadian engin- eers favor a double stage develop- ment and the United States one by a single stage. Some other engin- eers do not agree with the assured solidity of either plan until deep- er borings are made. There is some idea of suggesting more in- vestigation by an augmented board of experts fromy whom an unani- mous finding would. be sought. When, however, this section is built, it is intimated that the Unit- ed States government as stated would be expected to assume the greater share of it considering that the other sections have been or will be built in Canada. an ~ OVER 2| MILLION JARS USED YEARLY ected to | on the | So FREEBIE with ALCOMETER ANTI- the exact amount you buy. water yourself.
