Charles A. Lindbergh was welcomed to Costa. Rica yes- terday hy a crowd so frantie in fits j greetings that he was compelled to throw written instruetions over- board from his aeroplane to get the crowd out of the way before he could land, The filer, arriving from Manag- ua. on the sixth leg of his Central American towr, made three at- |tempts to land before he finally touched ground at 2.18 p.m.,'C.8.T. The confused and excited erowd were apparently ignorant of their danger, and Lindbergh skimmed 30-feét over their heads trying to land, the third time dropping over board a map of Guatemala upon which he had written: "It will not be possible for me to land until 'the crowd has moved over to the i side of the field." HICKMAN LIF IS THREATENED Fellow Prisoners of the Child Slayer Placed Behind Barred Doors Los Angeles, Jan. 8.--Manifest ill feeling toward William BE, | Hickman among prisoners in the "count jail has prompted jailers to keep the confessed slayer of Mar- ian Parker constantly behind | barred cell doors, Mutterings in prisoners' row reached a climax when a photo- graph of Hickman was suspcnded | trom the accused youth's cell door iby a string. The head of the photograph had been cut" around and a stout cord tiee about the neck with a hangman's knot. Jallers did not atiempt to con- { ceal their apprehension for Hick- { man's safety, and' plans were in consideration for placing heavier guards about his cell. Prisoners in Tank 16, near the tier where Hickman is econfineg, were re- sponsible for the *hanging" of the photograph. Some of the same prisoners, it was revealed recently, fashioned clubs from broom handles, and were holding them in readiness when the improvised weapons were discovered. Dr, George Senter, the principal, presented the report, showing the steady progress of the college, which now forms part of the Uni- versity of London, The number of students was in advance of any previous year, The total entry for he session was 1,242 (733 men and 509 women), as compared with 1,227 for the previous year. The foundation orati marks in Education," ed by Sir Henry Hadow, Vice-Chan- cellor of the University .of Bhef- field. He said that in the Middle Ages classical and scientific 'educa- tion began to run side by side, to- gether with a 'courtly education." Women's education was not a thing | wa of yesterday; there was a great | *® deal of education for women in the Middle Ages, The next landmark was the educational system de- veloped and encouraged by what was called the Renaissance,. An- other landmark was the attempt in the 16th century to eondact all education in the schools and col- leges in the Latin language, Edu- cation had sunk to its lowest level in the 18th century. Education had, however, pro- gressed, Sir Henry said, and it was now recognized that there was a difference between the different types of mind. To be any good, education must take these differ- ences into account and fit fits scheme to them, The last land- mark was the work of Dr, George Birkback, which was of revolu- tionary importance and turned the whole history of education round. The process of education had been continuous progress in , "Land- deliver- by no means reached its end or terminus yet, He believed that education would continue to pro- gress more and more in the fu- ture, WOOD ENGRAVERS' ART IS POETIC Remarkable Exhibition Made By English Wood-engraving Society London, Eng., Jan. 9.--"Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Enpglish Wood-Engraving So- clety's recent exhibition, at the St. George's Gallery, George Street, Hanover Square was the uniform- ity in technique of most of woodcuts," says the Times, "Nearly all the exhibitors are accomplished in their crafts, and in most cases a solid design is well within their powers, though this may demand elaborate cross-hatch- ing. But this power over the medium has, one may suspect, tak- en up most of the time of the artists, and the chief individual variations are mot in the way of different kinds of design, but rather in the poetical and literary aspects of the woodcut, This is to be expected, for the *'poetry" expresses what was in the artists's mind before he began his work, or perbaps in the jutervals of rest from it, "While the artist is at work he is not likely to turn his attention to anything but formal problems of one kind or another, 'so that if his technique rather than his sen- sibility is what copgerns the artist, this will not prevent him from ex- pressing his poetical ideas, but it may hamper his individual sensi- bility as an artist. Perhaps in the way of poetry the most interesting woodcuts here are John Nash's series of poisonous plants, which look truly ominous and deadly. In- deed, the woodcut would seem to be a good medium for purging the |emotiops by terror, since there is the same ominous quality in Miss Cynthia Kent's "deer" and in Miss Gertrude Hermes's woodcuts of plants. "Blair Hughes-Stanton does sue- ceed in getting a good individual design, though perhaps that pari of his work which is not so much a matter of intellect as of pure sensibility is rather hampered by his medium.
