JANUARY 7, 1928 Ottawa, Jan, 7.--The committee representing Great Britain and the Dominions will meet in London on Jan. 16, to probe the difficulties of the Pacific Cable Board, and Canada's technical advisers, L. J. Gaboury, deputy postmaster gén- eral, and Commander CO. P. Ed- wards, director of Canadian Gov- ernment Radio Services, are now on their way to England, where they will be joined by Sir Camp- bell Stuart who is representing the Federal Government on the board. Representatives from Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia will confer with the Canadians in an effort to iron out the problems which the operations of the Pa- cific Cable Board have given rise to. Chief among these is the deficits which the board. is incurring through competition with beam wireless, It was stated in London recently that wireless generally had resulted in causing a loss an- nually amounting to $476,000, and that there was reason for an- ticipating that this would not rep- resent the peak of the cable board's loss in the near future through such competition, The first Pacific cable under imperial partnership was laid from Southport, Australia, to Bamfield in British Columbia, in 1902, and from that year until 1918 the board incurred annual deficits, the total loss in this early period amounted to $3,486,615, and as one of the partners in the project Canada was obliged to contribute nearly $1, 000,000 to make up the deficit, the remainder being paid by the other Dominions and Great Britain, Business During War An pccess of husiness was brought to the Pacific Cable Board, however, by the war, due to the interruption of the eastern cable routes by enemy operations, and from 1015 onwards the Pacific Cable Board earned large annual ts, eventually, accum us in / a amoks fhe a eo suggested in 1926 by Canada, the board overruled Canada and pro- ot fture on the ground that before king on such a plan the board should enquire into the possibilities of beam wireless. The Seatrack for 5,600 tical les at an estimated cost of $11,800, 000, and from being a enterprise the Pacific Cable has be come & MHability. The restoration of the eastward cable routes from Great Britain to Australia, come bined with the strong competition from wireless have brought about a condition of things which have resul in summoning the meet- ing.in London on Jan, 16, in no intimation as to what attitude the Canadian repre- sentatives will take at the con- ference, but officials here feel that the results have justified. the Canadian attifude of two years ago. » CONST. QUITS SREY E NOTICE IRES Preston, Jan, S.--Although the re- signation tendered about a week ago by Francis Hicks, local constable, does not become effective until Jan. 15, the officer left town today, Mayor J. M, Gillies issued the fol- lowing statement: "Constable Hicks was relieved of his duties owing to several charges against him which he has been unable to clear up, and cer- tain confidential information concern- ing his past, received yesterday by the Police Committee, which it is at present unable to divulge. Chief Crawford has been requested to lay a charge against Hicks in connection with the arrest of Albert Ozubka and his father on Sunday last, in which the latter, a man 72 years of age, was, it is claimed, very severely handled by Hicks." LAMBTON FALL WHEAT INCREASES IN ACREAGE Sarnia, Jan. 5---Fall wheat in Lambton has been doubled in acre- age thie year, according to W. P, MacDonald, County Agricultural Re- presentative, who was a visitor to the city today. The number of feeder cattle within the county is greater than last year. Corn will have an increase acreage this year, owing to the effectiveness of the corn-horer control methods, It is generally believed, with these conditions existing, that the agricul- tural outlook will be much brighter during the coming year. The reporter called upon the vil- lage centenarian for an interview. This was readily granted. Then he asked for a message for the young people of today, "Fou go tell 'em," said the old lady, "I'm beginnin' my second cen- tury a great deal better on my pins wl Y | b) o -- || than when I begun my first 'un[" Whitby, Jan. 6--The Town Coun- cil will, at its inaugural meeting next Monday morning, pass a reso- lution formally inviting the mt. Hon. Leopold Charles Maurice Stennett Amery, Secertary of State for Dominion Affairs in the Brit. ish Parliament, and his wife, who is a sister of Sir Hamar Greenwood, Whitby's distinguished son, to come to Whitby for a public reception during their visit to Canada this month. His Worship Mayor Bate- man will bring the matter up, and it is possible that plans will be formulated for the reception. Mrs. Amery is a former well known Whitby girl and the county town would welcome her and her dis- tinguished husband and family if only for a few minutes. A clode friend here who had a recent let- ter from Mrs. Amery, states that she expressed a hope to be able to visit Whitby on this tour, ATLANTIC LINES PREPARE FOR BIG SHIPPING BATTLE Britain, Germany, Italy and United States in Struggle London, Jan, 7.--~One of the greatest battles In the hisiory of trans-Atlantic shipping may be launched in 1928 with Great Brit- ain, Germany, Italy and the United States fighting for the trans-At- lantic speed honors now held by the Cunard Liner 'Mauretania. Italy is reported to be about to build two new liners embodying entirely new principles in steam- ship construction which the de- signers of the ships say will av- erage hetween 35 and 40 knots an hour, Germany is pinning her hopes of lifting from England the honor of having the fastest liner in the world, through the two new 46, 000 ton liners Bremen and Eur- opa now nearing completion, and which are sald to have a cruising speed of between 25 and 26 knots, This is slower than the hest speed of the 20 year old Mauretania which once crossed the Atlantic at an average speed of 26 25 knots and which once when racing to the rescue of a ship in distress at- tained a speed of 29 knots, But the designers of the Bremen and Eur- opa say that by crowding their ships to the utmost they will be able to better the Mauretania's record trip. Rely on Mauretania Although England is reported to be preparing to construct two new ships larger than any in existence, it is understood that she will rely on the Maruetania to uphold her speed honors. If the Germans succeed howevef in lowering the Mauretania's time, some British company, possibly with the backing of the govern- ment, will probably set out to build a ship that at almost any sacrifice of comfort and economy will bring the, record back to Britain, As for Italy's claim to the dis- covery of new principles enabling speeds up to 40 knots, British shipping circles are skeptical, Probably more disquietening to the British shipping interests than the Italian or German threats to their speed supremacy, is the re- port than an American syndicate is planning the construction of a fleet of ocean grey-hounds which will make the trip from Sandy Hook to Plymouth in four days. This, it is conceded, Is quite with- in the range of practicability and would deal a heavy blow at the business now being carried by the six, seven and eight day boats ply- Ing between New York and Ply- mouth and Southampton, The new race when it material- izes will be a revival in a more thrilling form of the craze for speed that possessed shipbuilders 80 years ago, when the ship that made the fastest time got the cream of the trans-Atlantic travel, and received the highest prices, WIFE'S LEG BROKEN SHELBURNE MAN HELD Orangeville, Jan. 5--Ogle Bellerby, aged 30, well-known well driller of Shelburne, was lodged in the County Jail here tonight by Provincial Con- stable Joseph Nelson, charged with assault and bodily harm on his wife, According to the police the prisoner fractured her right leg. He was ar- rested yesterday near Collingwood by Provincial nstable Purvis, and he will receive his preliminary trial before Police Magistrate Hugh Fale coner next Tuesday, R. 3.
