"The present day in Canada is full of unequalled opportunities but on the other hand the re- sponsibilities, of the individual elector were never more enor. mous," he. warned, The mistakes of the past could be corrected and the success of the future assured. only by the intelligent use of the individual franchise, Many people wondered, Mr, Ben- nett said, why he chose to pursue a life of political toil, "Providence having been good jo me, I &ecided to devote myself to the service of my country," 'he explained. | Turning to a discussion of demo- leratic government Mr, Bennett said the world was being flooded with the idea that democracy was a failure. This question was of su- preme importance to Canada. "It is essential that we in Can- ada and British Columbia should make a success of democracy," he urged. . Defining democracy, Mr. Ben- nett pointed out that all men were not equal--except for all their spiritual equality before God, to understand Canada and its prob- lems, it was necessary to under- stand this part--the essential dif- ference between men in different places and in different spheres, "Everyone in Canada over 21 years has a right and a responsib- ility in the government of this country," he said. "That being s0, it is vital that we have an intelli- gent and educated democracy. Ev- ery man or woman can exercise a profound influence on the thought of his or her community. "One of the greatest difficulties of democracy is its indifference. How many of you are taking an interest in the government of your country? I ask you at the begin- ning of 1928, how indifferent are you towards your country's wel- fare. Today you have your news- papers, your clubs, your parties. these things. It is no matter to me what party a man follows-- ry MR. S. JACOB, DEALER IN RAGS, Buying Hon. R. B. Bennett Ad- | Success of Canada Will Rest Through them' you can learn of {providing he intefests himself and educates himself in public affairs in the government of our oly dent and general manager of Gen- eral Motors of Canada, Limited; J. H. Beaton, general sales manager for the corporation; Tom Just, famous Montreal sales champion who can sell in French but can't speak it; A, Ross of Vancouver; Fred Heather, general manager of General Motors Acceptance Cor poration; A. E. Barker, Antherst, N.S., whose loyalty to Chevrolet is equalled only by his sales record and his ability as a teller of fishing stories. M. M. Gowdy, comptroller of General Motors of Canada; Nor- man Berry, assistant manager of Prairie Provinces; W, H. Moyse, chief engineer--"without whom," Mr. MacKinnon declared, 'Cana- dian General Motors cars would not have refinements in equipment with which ne other country is gerved"--; Frank Wolf of Edmon- ton, "The Wild Wolt" whose sales magnefftm has made Edmonton a General Motors city; George Hes- zlewood, secretary of the corpofa- tion and adviser to all; W. A. Coad, factory manager; and Fred Stappells of Calgary, one of the outstanding dealers of the west. Cheers, verses of 'He's a jolly good fellow" and demonstrations of various kinds greeted each one introduced. J. H, Beaton made a brief but telling address, He first asked the {assembled dealers: "What Is the car?" "Chevrolet back. real Canadian was thundered ", Tours to Oshawa Mr. Beaton then outlined some of the things which are planned to make this the greatest year in Chevrolet history, . just as 1927 broke all previous records. Ad- vertising is to be used in the full- est sense, but General Motors of Canada's general sales manager told what kind of advertising it would be in one sentence: "We don't believe in sarcastic advertising!" i He urged Ontario dealers to make use of the Oshawa plant in a new way, that is to organize parties to come and inspect the marvels of production which are carried on in this city. Every thing that can be dome here to make such parties welcome and ensure that they thoroughly enjoy their visit was promised. As the brief but forceful ad- dresses from executives and sales leaders succeeded one another, it was evident that some quality of inspiration was welding the ban- quetters into an unbeatable pro- ction force. dust! RM Geroux of Chicoutimi, Quebec, one of the outstanding General Motors dealers in the sen- for province, addressed the ban- quet guests in French, at Mr. Mao- Kinnon's request; and in English with Gallic courtesy for those who were unable to follow De address landed two beauti- ful things--the new Chevrolet and the Lake St. John district of Que pee, M. Georux is president of the Chicoutimi Board of Trade and he urged President McLaughlin and others of the G. M. C. executive staff to visit the district this sum- mer. H. A. Brown, vice president and eneral manager of General Mot- ors of Canada, Limited, dwelt on the part that service plays in the sale of General Motors Products. He was introduced by Mr. MacKin- non as one "whose sense of fair- ness and justice is of the kind that marks a real man who knows his job." He promised the Chevrolet dealers that would come to krow Mr. Brown in the mear future in connection with this year's great tion program. produ blo of Calgary told what the annual convention means to the dealer in the way ot sales and he predicted that great things would follow from the pres- ent gathering. ' C. BE. McTavish, chief of the Parts and Service Department, announced that his section would be giving three day courses In service and accounting for sales- men during the present year. Splendid Interest A. Lockhart of Kitchener gave a vivid account of the impression made on the public by the New Chevrolet which was put on ex- hibition on New Year's Day holi- day. Over 1,200 people were taken out for demonstrations on that first day, he declared. All were enthusiaistic over the new car's beauty and performance. Mr, MacKinnon asked Mr. Lock- hart to speak in Gaelic but de- clined. He told an "efficiency" story, however, which was rom: mended to W. A. Coad, W. H. Moyse and Lieut. Col. Chappell. In response to the toast which was proposed in his honor, Presi- dent McLaughlin replied by stating that while he 1s the proud grand- father of six grand-children, he finds his General Motors Products "children" to be very close to his heart, "That family one," he declared, pelled to say tonight Chevrolet kid is some (Cheers). "It Is the lustiest, huskiest little cuss ever created by men, and it is growing better and better and I believe handsomer. In my opinion, this year's Chevrolet is the hand- somest thing that ever came out of the hands of men. "Let me, however, express to all of you how grateful we are for your spirit, The atmosphere of this gathering is something that you field men creat which the headquarters staff cannot evoke. We want your good will, for we can't get far without it, "General Motors is the greatest industry of its kind in the world. It is centralized yet decentralized. in every division, the people at ! the head are allowed a very broad scope. Here in Oshawa we are trying to do our duty in a gentle- manly and dignified way and we are putting our hearts into the twork. We are, of corse, here to get out a large production, but we are also trying to create good will for the corporation, Greatest Value "Our goal is to produce the greatest value in the world; to get out the greatest production, manufacure the handsomest cars and sell them at reasonable prices The policy of the corporation is not to set up\a silly price and trust to eventualitiés, Our prices are placed on a business basis which givee an adequate return on in- vested capital. It is true that Gen. eral Motors makes great profits, but comsidering the volume of its business, those profits are very very reasonable. We believe that we can continue indefinitely on that basis." Mr. McLaughlin then referred to the school for mechanics main- tained in this city which gives three months factory garage train- ing; and to the travelling school now in progress throughout the west. Already some 250 men have graduated and have returned to their employers capable of giving tl:e highest type of service. He urged dealers to make the fullest possible use of the schools during the current year. The banquet concluded with tht singing of Auld Lang Syne in the | traditional crossed-grip manner, Waiting busses took Western deal- ers to Toronto to make connections with trains for Winnipeg and the Pacifie coast. Handsome cuff links bearing the Chevrolet crest were distribut- ed to each guest as a souvenir of the convention, is an extemsive "but I am com- that this kid!" APT COMPARISON Feodore Chaliapin has actually mustered up courage to crack a joke concerning the late alleged English summer! : : Its shortcomings were being dis- cussed in the lounge of an hotel where he was staying--and nobody had a good word to say for it, "I have never known a summer like it," said one man finally. "I have," put in Chaliapin. "You have?" exclaimed of the company in chorus. ren | "Last winter," chuckled Chaliapin. had been a factor in doubling his |g TIME TABLES Leave Bowman. 1.00 p.m. 4.35 p.m. 6.43 p.m, 9.40 p.m, CNR.
