(152-a) PROFESSORS FAVOR SIMPLE LANGUAGE Attack Purists for Cumber- some Expressions and Phrases ADAPTATION FAVORED English Language Declared Immune from Effects of Modernism Cincinnati, Onio, Dee. 31.--Con- demnation of purists who wish to preserve awkward phrases in the inglish language simply because they are correct, was uttered by Pro- fessor George M, Bolling, of Ohio State University, before the Linguis- tic Society of America here yéster- day, Professor Bolling is one of the most distinguished Homerie scholars living, "English as Spoken "The purist would have us saying "somebody's else hat' instead of 'somebody else's hat'," Professor Bolling scorned. "He can't parse the latter phrase so he thinks it should not be allowed." "I say 'aren't I' in preference to the awkward 'am I not, " said Pro- fessor Samuel Moore, of the Uni- versity of Michigan, "I can't quite bring myself to say 'ain't I' so I say 'aren't I' by way of compromise and I don't think that it is going to hurt the English language." Professor Moore believes usage should determine everything in speech, "No one can hurt the Eng- lish language," he said. "It is too big, too tremendous, It changes, but no one force means very much in the trend it takes," "And if anyone would hurt it" Professor Bolling inserted, "if he could, that person is the purist." "I would rather have a person talk naturally and endeavor to adapt his speech to the better speech of his equals than to attempt what is vir- tually impossible. If dialect is the speech of his world, why should he not speak its language?" Professor Bolling said. A suggestion that the American newspapers are hurting the English language was met by a protest, ars Newspapers "The purists may say so," Profes- sor Moore declared, "but that is ab- surd, The newspapers I read are not committing any grevious faults except by accident." Professor Bolling does object, how- ever, to the substitution of commas for the word "and" in newspaper headlines. "I know why they do it, but all the same they should avoid it. 'Men, Women Hurt in Train Wreck, that is very awkard, he said, There was a discussion of sub- junctives and finally Professor Moore remarked, "Did you notice the split infinitive in me article this morning, Professcr Bolling? I have been trying to split an infinitive for a long time. It was an excellent one." Prof. Boliing had not noticed it, UNREGISTERED BEEKEPERS PAY COSTS AT BARBRIE Barrie, Dec. 30.--About sixty bee keepers from points in South Simcoe appeared before Magistrate Jeff here this morning charged with failure to register under the Foul Brood Act, which in 1925 sup- planted the Bee Disease Act. Crown Attorney F. G. Evans ad- dressed the court on the necessity of registration if the apiaries of the Province were to be kept free from contamination. Under the present law only under license could bees be held, moved or bar- tered in. The small beekeeper did not seem to appreciate this fact, he said. However there was no de- sire to be harsh on the part of the Government, and the Crown would consent to a withdrawal' of the charges upon the payment of court corte $4 in each case, and in un- dertaking to register forthwith, which costs another dollar. The court concurred in this course. HICKMAN Wi PLEAD INSANITY May Plead Guilty in the Hope of a Lighter Penalty Los Angeles, Dec. 30.--Insanity will be the answer pleaded by Wil- liam B. Hickman for his confessed abduction and murder of Marian Parker, it was announced today by his attorney, Jerome Walsh, who was sent here by the mother of the 19-year-old youth to defend him, After a study of the California penal code, the insanity defense was outlined by the attorney as the basis of his fight for Hickman, who today told officers that the $1,600 ransom obtained from the dead girl's father meant more to him than the child's right to live. Walsh Confers With Slayer Walsh, who arrived yesterday from © Kansas City, Hickman's home town, spent the day closeted with Los Angeles officials and in Hickman's cell with the prisoner. He said that a night's examination of tht State's penal code offered four possible avenues of plea. These are, he pointed out, 'guilty', "insanity," 'guilty and insane," or "not guilty and insane." The last plea would require first a trial as to guilty of the charge of kidnapping and murder and later separate trial as to sanity, before either the same or a different jury. On New Sections The legal roads open to a de- fense of Hickman on plea of ine sanity are founded on new sections of the penal code, legal authorities said, which have not been tested before the Supreme Court. Walsh expressed his belief thal Hickman had withheld information of the kidnapping and murder of the 12-year-old daughter of Perry M. Parker, bank official. He sald he was convinced that the crime had not been committed by one person alone, The attorney also announced that Hickman's mother and sister might come to California for the trial, Change in Story In revealing that Hickman had said the $1,500 ransom money was more important to him than the right of Marian Parker to life, Chief of Detectives Herman Cline pointed out that Hickman had changed the story told in his written confession. The killing of the girl first was attributed by Hickman to an unconguerable de- sire to kill as the girl sat before him blindfolded and tled to a chair, Hickman's new related by Cline was: 'She was restless Saturday morning; | was afraid she would make an out- ery, and anyway, the $1,600 was more important tg me than her right to live," Double for Hickman Officers continued their investi- gation today of the murder of Ivy Thoms, a druggist, which has been confessed by Hickman, and his ad- mitted accomplice, Wilby Hunt, aged 16, who also is in jail, While admission as TIME TABLES CNR, TIME TABLE x) bs" y rig time {3 1S, \ Sunday. GARTON, PROPRIETOR Bowmanville--Phone $12 Oshawa Waiting, oom--10 Prince attorneys prepared for Appearance of Hickman in court Tuesday to enter his plea, an elusive and per- sistent double for Hickman held a place in the compleve picture, The double came on the scene in the Bellevue Arms Apartment, where Hickman, under the name Nov. 23. On the previous day Ralph Kats, who had engaged rooms Nov, 12, moved his belong- ings to & room near that of "Evans." Katz and "Evans," Katz and "Evans" were so sim- ilar in appearance that persons who knew both were unable to tell their pictures apart, The similarity of the two youths brought confusion when police photographs of Hickman, taken when he was arrested for forgery, were shown John Henry, owner of the apartment house, He {identi- fied Hickman's picture as one of Katz.
