SHAW CHAMPIONS POSTMAN'S CASE Says Administration of Jus- tice in Department is "Monstrous Outrage" London, Dec. 23.--George Ber: nard Shaw contributed to "The Evening ftandard" Tuesday a col- umn long letter denouncing what he called a "monstrous outrage' in the case of a London postman. who, convicted of the theft of $2.50, will lose his state Insurance of $1,500 and a pension of $13.75 a week due him after 36 years' service, "What earthly right has tke Crown to seize this postman's hard- earned provision for his old age," Mr. Shaw indignantly demands to know. "The magistrats could have sentenced him to a suitable period of imprisonment, at the same time warning the authorities that they have not a ghost of a moral or legal right to steal his money or add to the penalty in any way." "Almost an incitement to pub- lic crime," is the way Mr, Shaw sums up the matter, Post office officials said that the postman came under the service rule, which automatically stopped the pension and gratuity in cases where workers are discharged for dishonesty. DIXON'S Telephone~-- de 2 Four direct liens to Central Artistic Displays to be Seen in Store Windows Of Oshawa Merchants Business Men Show Enter prise in Assortment of Goods, Affording Citizens Wide Selections for Christ- mas Gifts -- Novel Ideas Yorked Into Displays At- tracting More Than Usual Interest -- Ingenious ideas and artistic dis- plays are found in the windows of Oshawa merchants as glorious Christmas rapidly approaches. There is hardly a merchant in the city that has not made at least some effort to fall in line with the Joyful spirit of the Christmastide, and the business streets of the city. especlally Simcoe and. King streets, are beautifully attractive by day and colorfully ablaze by night. A display that is complete in detail and to whjch considerable floor space Is given, is that of the Moffatt Motor Sales. A backwoods scene, cedar trees enclose it on three sides, and a carpet of leaves and chips covers the foreground To the right of center appears a hunter's cabin, and beside it, to the left, is a new Pontiac, snow-cover: ed, but looking ready for action at a moment's spin of the starter. In front of the cabin is a rustic bench, with tin dipper and basin, stretched on the front wall is a skin, and leaning against a corner of the cabin is the trusty rifle. In the foreground are two stumps one with a squirrel perked on ft, while on the otlLer repo es an axe The whole is a very realistic forest scene in the show window of a city store. Another display, an entirely diiferent appeal, iy that of the Arcade, This one is primarily for the clildren, and is shown in conncction with their Toyland. Forming a background for the south window Is a large picture, "Jingle Bells" In soft pas- tel shades, showing Salat Nick himself, if you please. But next to fafta Claus' portrait, Ham and Sam take the most attention with their funny minstrel antics. Other toys there are in abundance, and seldom does the window lack spectators, A cosy ho.ne scene that shows up particularly well at night is displayed by Disney's real estate office. This window, while not large, has been arranged in a pleasing manner, with a model of a house the central figure. With 2 red exterior representing modern prick finishing, and with the win- dows faithfully portrayed, this provides a very attructive window display when the lights arranged inside are lit. A snow covered foreground, and Santa at the chimney complete the scene. Just which ecarries doorway, C. H. Tuck has a nicely arranged optical window displayed, with snow, tinsel and other dec- orations intermingling, With a large window filled with toys, the Luke Furniture Co., has arranged a display that tempts the kiddies to stop and look. Play- things of every description are there, and the whole is pleasingly 'decorated in red and green shades. In the east window, where furni- ture is on view, a bell in the center forms the pivat from which dee- orative streamers lead to every part of the window. A cleverly worked out idea ia at the base of the window display of W. H. Thickson, local agent for Star automobiles. The arrange- ment is simple with trees forming a background, and the principles figures being the three wise men following the star. "0 look at Santa Claus" a little tot exclaims, in front of Karn's drug store. And there he is, with his arm moving and pointing out the articles on display, Both win- dows of this firm are attractively arranged, with pretty decorations and flowers and plants, The stores of both Steel's Lim- ited and F. W. Woolworth are also displaying the decorations that help make this season a gay and merry one. Curiously enough, the window decorations of these firms 'ollow somewhat the same pattern, raving colorful balls hanging in tractive arrangement by red and een streamers, Legends of ferry Christmas" and other setings are also noticed. A colorful display for the eye to st upon has been provided by 'ard's. Wreaths, bells, holly and ,oinsettas are only some Of the ocorations used to - add the aristmas to merchandising, while cal and artificial plants and the udicious use of picture cartons udds to the sgene, The display in | both windows is attractive and should add materially to the firm's turnover. Of a quiet, yet attractive, nature is the display of Adam's Furniture | store, Central background in each | window, two picture scene are fit- | ingly framed in borders of cedar oughs and entwined oak leaves just enough pleces of furniture | re grouped in the window to ef actively complete the showing. Keating's, Ledger's and Deten- .cks, form a trio of men's wear ores that have equally attractive isplays in their windows. edger store employs a modern 'ectric sign which gives forth its message "Merry Christmas and 2 {appy New Year" with ever chang ng colors; Keating's uses pleturc llustrating the wisemen in pursui of the star in the Holy Land, witl other decoration; while Deter beck's employs attractive decora tive effects in streamers and crep¢ paper. Andérson's and Johnston's opposite this window, in the same | The" are also showing Christmas win- dows. Lycett"s have an Ingenous dis play in keeping with both the spirii of the season and their-object iu business. The central part of the display is a shapely Christma: tree, with a carpet of snow adding to the effect. On the tree are fixed documents including agreements of sale, deeds of land, etc. and strips bearing the legent "'profits. Cards bear the season's greeting: on either side of the tree, and tin: sel and Christmas bells add to the scene, An attractive toy display has been arranged by Henderson's book store, with dolls in the west win- dow and toys in the one at the east. Crepe paper In several different patterns, adds to the display. Two displays of the same type, yet with each one its own In- dividuality, are shown by Kyles and Beaton's. Their wares of groc- eries and fruit are shown, attrac- tively arranged with the usual green and red decorative scheme intermingling. Potted plants anu ferns add 'color to the showings. The Loblaw groccteria and both stores of the Arnold firm are also showing window displays wita a rather nice Christmas touch Beattie's drug store has inter- ested persons about its window during a great part of the day The original attraction is an electric sign, flashing" colorfully accom panied by a piercing buzz, but the display of seasonable articles ar- ranged with Christmas decorations, caused them to stay for a time Other drug stores in the city, wn cluding Jury & Lovell's, Mitchell # and Thompon's, have creditabio displays. Both windows of Wilson & Lees music store bave a pleasing Chris. mas touch, In the south window a model of air open fireplace, witn Janta Claus in evidence; while in the north window a Christmas tree is placed, Artificial snow, tin gel and wreati:s add to the display Cleve Fox, Flintoff"s hardware. -- I This deemable only at Your Last Chance SPECIAL This i 1928 model writing outfit and : Ta § writing it (pen pencil), jade green in color, with THIS COUPON IS WORTH $4.00 This coupon and $1.00 entitles bearer to one of our $5.00 Combination Outfits 17 KING STREET WEST Pencil is automatic propel and repel, hard unbreakable barrel, refills holder, always ready for use. : coupon is redeemable from now until Saturday, December 24th, 12.00 p.m..* NOT MORE THAN THREE SETS ON ONE COUPON. Both Burn's and Errol Bruton's shoe stores, have arranged thoughtful displays, and footwear is given a showing materially more appealing + with the use of decoration. At the latter store the south window is reserved for sug- cestions of gifts for "him" while the other one show gifts for "her" both having an attractive back- ground of pictured scenes. All of the windows of the Burns estab- lishment are very well dressed, in a colorful and pleasing manner.
