For hours the poor old nobleman sat by the dying five, until the embers became ccld, and a dreary chill settled over tue room, wearily he arose from his chair, and drazged himself pain- fuliy upstaivs to. his sleepless couch, ; He arose early nest. morning with a strange ieeling oi expecta tion, He feit as though some be- 2..0Mut spirit nad passed its hand across his wrinklew brow, smooth- .ng away tue cares and troubles of years of woiry and poverty at one light touch, He descended 'the stairs, expeciing he knew not what, Wverything looked just as he left it the night beiore, but still «here was that peculiar unexplain: anle sense of some impending hap- piness pervading the very air, He walked towards the fireplace, and knelt down in o.der to ciear away the ashes and make a mew fire, But what was that lying right in the centre of the embers? Gently he picked it up, It looked some- thing like 4 woollen stocking, It was heavy, and as he shook it there came a sound as of many gold pieces clinking against one another, Suddenly he remembered his prayer of the previous evming, his prayer to the good St. Nicholas for his three daughters, Mignt there not be three purses, then? He looked eagerly among the ashes, and lo! two other similar purses were lying there half hidden under some unburnt sticks! Parker Gilbert, agent-general of reparations payments, which es- pecially have disturbed France as the heaviest reparations creditor, The suggestion that a limit be set on he amount that Germany wiil be ealled upon to pay and for the removal of foreign control of transfer payments are the points on which the French.are in least ascord with the agent-general. It was learned Monday that Poincare, who talked with Gilbeit just before the latter sailed for America, decided that France should lose no time in putting her views on record, The Premier's statement may take the form of a note to the reparations commis- slop. It is comsidered more likely, however, that it will be in the form of a speech to the Senate dur Ing the discussion of the budget. The Senate took up the budget on Monday with the promise tn finish it by Wednesday so presum- ably Poincare only Is awaiting for the proper moment to inject his views into the discussion, He has been taking an active part in the x bandling of the budget in the Up- per House as he did during its course through the Chamber. |. 'C, 8. Ford, ctor, estimates is about half th® total of unemployed men in the city. This is considerably more than last year. A report that the Gov- ernment was to build a new re taining wall on the Rideau Cana! brought men here from many parts of the country greatly in excess of the number employed. Fewer men are now needed on the Gatineau Power construction, and there has not been as great a demand as usual for men for the lumbering camps, all of which affects the situation here.
