TE ---------- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1927 LASH FOR CRIMINALS The Toronto Globe "cannot withold a word of commendation for Magistrate Graydon, who at London on Friday sentenced two hold-up men each to ten years' imprisonment and twenty la: Mid Magistrate Graydon is indeed. to be commend- ed for setting an example which, in the inter- stg" of citizens upon whom the criminal ele- ments seeks to prey, should be widely followed, A criminal, in the majority of cases, is a vie- {im of misplaced self-esteem, s conceit can cndure prdon, for to that type of mind there i+ always a road to escape for the "superior mats!' But he shrinks from the lash not nec- > csi because of physical cowardice, but be- cause a whipped man hds no belief in his own invieibility, The lash may be brutal in itself and certain- ly capable of abuse, But today's 'criminals should not cavil over- much at brutality--they make such generous use of it in their war against society. FINE PUBLIC SPIRIT General Motors, as a corporate entity, is a ood citizen of Oshawa, It has the fine ability , see things from that standpoint--as an in- dividual, one of many forming a progressive young city, It makes no parade of its vital position in the community; it does not try to ose as a benefactor; it is prone to assign busi- jess reasons for its purest philanthropy. Yesterday, however, the Company was ught red-handed in the performance of a Ifsimposed duty from which cold business ogie will turn away with a wintry smile, The annouficement is to the effect that the Company is building its own quarter-mile track to ve, 'fiewly manufactured cars their road teste: It 'was like the Company to start the wotlk and ther announce it. effect of this project will be felt at once. Then came the finest point of all. Construction could have been delayed until 8 more favourable season with entire jus- tice, but the Company considered the school children whose hours of class work have had to he rearranged lately so that they might not be on the streets at the peak hours of traffic con- gestion, That was pure sentiment but a very fine one, reflecting credit upon those who entertained it to such public spirited effect, More, it sets an example to all other citizens of the community in the matter of considera- tion. Follow it generally, and Oshawa will be an infinitely happier city in which to live, suc CULTURE THROUGH MUSIC Director Unitt and the officers of the General Motors Music and Dramatic Society are to be congratulated on fine progress made by that association of music lovers now that they have begun their sceond year's service. At the close of the season this past spring, the organi- zation numbered 75 members both in chorus and orchestra. When it assembled at the Re- gent theatre Sunday evening, there were 100 voices, and 25 musicians in the orchestra. The best direction in the world could not be oiven the entire credit for the drawing to- wether of so many people and welding them into such disciplined effectiveness. In all of them--director, chorus and orchestra--the Vol- inteer Spirit was splendidly in evidence, and that spirit is not to be found where egoism is ¢ rulng passion. While on the subject of music and the or- «nization serving the auspices of General ators of Canada, it is eminently worth call- .ag public atieztion to iho fact that the Cor- The OSHAWA DAILY TIMES. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1927 poration is inatazing weekiy concert Hos from Station WEAF, New York, and 24 allied sta- tions at 9.30 pm. E. 8S, T,, Monday. The importance of this to wa ig not merely that General Motors is doing it, but that the name of "Oshawa" will be carried through the ether each week to millions of lis- teners to those concerts for which a notable list of artists is being engaged. ; It is suggested that Oshawa citizens do their bit towards making these concerts suc- cessful. In writing to relatives and friends elsewhere, tell them about General Motors Family Hours, on the air each Monday night at 9.30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. No other city on this continent is going to get such general radio publicity this winter as Oshawa. The more that hear about the con- certs, the more who write in expressing ap- preciation, the better it will be for our city, WHAT BRYANT PROBABLY HAD IN MIND. The author of Thanotopsis is responsible for canard on November as being a month of "melancholy days." What he actually said was "The melancholy days have come, the sad- dest of the year." It may have been "days" in Bryant's time, but it is "nights" now. Nights of assemblies at churches, lodges, school houses and elsewhere to hear music un- der its various forms or aliases, And wherever there is music--vocal, instru- mental or combined--the pest that brings more heads down in hoary sorrow to the tomb have any other flourishes mightily in the land. He is not one pest but many pests; like the Gaderene devil his name is "Legion" and he in- habits swine. Age does not wither, custom does not stale the infinite variety of concert chatter. Let a voice of angelic sweetness move the normal heart to rapture, and immediately this torture of life is busy. Yonder, is a group of unspank- ed boys, whose presence at a concert is one of life's major mysteries, is exhibiting what in our more gentle moments is described as the "buoyant spirits of youth," Over there, the latest edition of Eve's less sucgessful daughters is holding a sort of Court of Love. In the rear of the hall, the late comers converse with ex- traordinary brightness, unmindful of the fact that in most halls you can't distinguish the words of a song, but you can hear the lightest whisper of those whom concerts and running bath water render vocal, Nobody, unfortunately, knows what to do about it once the concert is over, There, sur- rounded by the weak endurance of hundreds of others, one merely invents new forms of tor- ture. Exhausted by such imaginative flights, no one has the strength the next day or the next week to call a public meeting, If some- one did, nobody would come. What humanity needs is not radio selectivity, but ears that can tune themselves only to what their owners want to hear, "MAN WANTED" It is recognized by those that have given the matter much thought that the success, failure, or--a worse thing--a sort of half-and-half con- dition for the proposed Oshawa Chamber of Commerce would depend on the character and ability of the secretary whom it might employ, Particularly during its formative period of the first three years. A survey of the probable resources which a membership drive might uncover indicates that the most that could be expected in the way of fees would be around $12,500 a year. Using that sum as the basis for a budget, the Chamber could not either wisely or econom- ically employ a man at a salary much greater than $3,500 a year, There are very many good men receiving much less than that sum. But there is one quality without which even marked ability has to mark time, That is to say, experience, It is just possible that there is such a man available who might, given a live organization behind him, be willing to serve on a Dollar-a- Year basis during the Chamber's formative years. It would mean, of course, giving him an assistant for réutine work and a good one. The Universities of Canada turn out such men every spring. No names are mentioned, for this is the sort of suggestion that can easily be ignored. . Yet Oshawa has always been noted for its "Luck." Its luck, however, has always lived in the genius of its leaders, !
