ABANDONED London, Nov. 16.--Definite an- nouncement that two of the three cruisers which should be laid down this fiscal year under the 1925 Brit- ish naval program would not be pro- ceeded with was made by W. C. Bridgeman, First Lord of the Ad- miralty, in the House of Commons this afierncon, He said one cruiser would be ordered laid down, but that "the Gosernment has decided, in the light of the situation disclosed at the Geneva Naval Conference, that it is not necessary nor desirable to nroceed with the laying down of the ther two this year." CRUISERS "You never .saw a man wearing a black eye because he minded his own business," remarks a writer. How about the prizefighter after a hot session in the ring? (106-tf) | title it to a permanent return if the STH IRNS IN COAL INDUSTRY Viproli K Reply Made to Owners. by Lord REPEATS ARGUMENT Reference is Made to Redon dant Directors on Boards London, Nov. 17.--Tha! the Brit- ish coal mining industry is emcum- bered with 'costly drones" in the shape of redunant directors and that the owners instead of seeking to dis- cover what is wrong with the man- agement of their industry, prefer to ask the Government for more assis- tance, are the points made by Lork Beaverbrook in a, vigorous reply to the coal owners who recently charg- ed hime with impertinence and ig- norance for daring to offer them any advice and to suggest a 100 per cent combine of the whole industry. Lord Beaverbrook .repeats his ar- gument that the only way for the owners to avoid public contempt for themselves and ruin for. their in- dustry is a merger of their proper- ties. He describes himself as "a man highly trained in finance and ex- perienced in the organization con- duct of industrial trusts." Groans Over Reply He adds: "I am told by the coal owners that the dismissal of redun- dant directors would not represent the saving of half a penny per ton on the output. An efficient man Hf business will give a groan at the snirit which dictate such an answer. '""Actually, the presence of a use- less director on a board implies all the paraphernalia and staff with which he surrounds himself in order to cover the naked fact of his use- lessness and the nepotism in import- ant appointments in which he indul- ges." To those who have assured him that the codl industry is sufficient to itself and does not want outside opinions. he replies by declaring that the public cannot guietly stand by and see the mining industry ruined. "The mere fact that capital has been invested in coal mines does not en- investment has heen unwisely made or wrongly managed," is his closing thrust. pi -------------------- A proud young father wired the news of his happiness to his broth- er in these words: -- "A handsome boy has come to my house and claims to be your nep- hew. We are doing our best to give him a proper welcome." The brother, however, failed to see the point, and wired back: "I have no nephew. The young man js an imposter" CAPTURE 13 AWARDS AT WINTER FAIR (Continued from page 9) It was raining, a drenching, driz- zling downpour outside But within the vast Coliseum everything was bright and blithe as a sunny spring morning. The place wag crowded in, spite of the miserable weather. And, as always at the opening of this Royal Fair, the audience was a dis- tinguished one. Brilliant Spectacle Against the bizarre, rather futur- istic color scheme which the decor- ations within the Coliseum present this year, the opening ceremonies, in which his Excellency the Governor- General participated, provided a brilliant spectacle So did the flash- ing scarlet and brass of the Royal Canadian Dragoons in the smart evo- lutions of 'their musical ride. And the spice of thrills was introduced into the performance by the breath- catching feats of the jumpers. Ceremony was Impressive The opening ceremony by Gover- nor-General Willingdon was perhaps one of the events of main interest to, the thousands of spectators who crowded the tiers of 'seats, boxes and aisles around the tanbark ring. It was an impressive opening At the arrival, of the Viceregal party the National Anthem was played and the large audience stood at atten- tion. Then to the beat of their old marching tune, attired in their ori- ginal green uniforms and "shakos," came swinging into the tan bark ring the Queen's Own Rifles Regi- ment---the guard of honor. A red carpet was spread from their Excellencies' box to the cen- tre of the ring and over this Vis- count Willingdon, accompanied by Wantea to Buy MR. 8. JACOB, DEALER IN RAGS, and all kinds of metals. Buying scrap batteries, old ears and poul- try. Goods . called for. Phoue 2606M. Residence 99 Mill street. (111-4f) amr a Br Sk A. G. BROOMFIELD Hatteries, Wright Funerals J A DIRECTOR AND EM FUNERAL oy! ER Successer to DISNEY FUNERAL SERVICE 82 Simcoe St. S. Phone 1082 his aides, proceeded toward the regi- ment, which was drawn up for in- spection. Her Excellency Lady Wil- lingdon, also advanced a certain dis- tance into the ring while the inspec- tion was im process, Following the inspection the regi- ment marched about the ring and ut again and the rest of the per- ormance was on. rN in point us ugvelty, the parade of hundreds of boys selected from the counties of the Province and brought to the Fair by the Ontario Government, was outstanding. Horses Hold Stage. For the rest of the evening, hors- es held the centre of attention Prancing horses, dancing horses, and faithful Dobbins of milk wigons, who make the early morning musi- cal with their hoofs, shared the tan- bark with the lithe jumpers, whoge performance finished the opening show well 'after midnight. For color and gracefulness noth- ing could egual the musical ride of the Royal Canadian Dragoons. They werg brilliant _ in scarlet tunics, plumed brags helmets and, pennons flying from lances. Troops in columns, wheels in fours and. eights and varipus intricate manoeuvres ending with a stirring final charge evoked cheers of admiration. One of the most coveted prizes of the show, the Governor-General's Cup for. three-year-olds bred in Can- ada and suitable for military re- mounts, was won by Royal, qwned by T. J. Macabe. The cup was pre- sented by his Excelleney. . In Governor's Box In the Governor-General's box were, besides their Excellencies, his Honor Lieutenant-Governor W. D Ross and Mrs. Ross, Premier Fer- guson and Mrs. Ferguson, E M. Car- roll, D. O Bull, Alfred Rogers, Hon. J. 8. Martin, Mayor Foster and J M. Gardhouse The appearance of the dairy horse drawing milk wagons was an inter- esting note of contrast. In this class first prize went to Frosty of the City Dairy, second to Playboy of the Far- mer's Dairy, and third to Brawn Girl of the City Dairy. In the sin- gle-harness-horse class first prize was won by Dare Aspire, owned by Stewart & Higginbottom of Winni- peg; second by Newton Victor, own- ed by Miss Jean Browne Scott of Stratford, Pa; third by Killearn Magic of Killearn Farm, Millbrook, N.Y., and fouth by Knight Banner- el, owned by Miss Scott. Thrilling Moments There were but two turnouts last night in the class for harness tan- dems, 15 hands 2 inches and over James Franceschini's Temptation and Myrtle Fashion was first, with the second award going to the Strathlyn Farm entry, War- wick Belle and mate, Sligo, owned by Miss Eleanor Me- Laughlin, Oshawa, and ridden by Dick Marscott, captured the premier award in the green middleweight hunters' clas.s The U plands Farm's Fetchem took the second ribbon with Markham, owned and ridden bv Fred Baxter third and The Sec- ond Jane, owned. by Gordon Per TY and ridden by Miss Beulah Wilson, fourth, In this jumping class there were some thrilling moments when In- Spector Crosbie, head of the Toronto Police Mounted Squad, faced the police horse Bob at the fences, f30b refused to move along at the In- Spector's command, balked, bucked and finally threw his rider. Crosbie, unhurt, remounted and withdrew the hose from the ring. After the greater part of the en- tries in the jumpers' class had been eliminated earlier in the day, 11 horses rejumped for the prizes in the concluding number last night First honors in this class went to Bucephalus, owned and ridden hy Major R S. Timmins of the Royal Canadian Dragoons. Frank Hodg- son's Rio, with Eddie Tweedle up, was second, with Nora Gordon on Dr, C. A. Temple's Nell MeNeil third It was past midnight when tho last fans left the spacious arena, and as' one man remarked: "You had to be, here night and day to take in all the sights" The best anthracite the mines ever produced ise+but a few minutes ride from your tele- phone.
