PAGE FOUR THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1927 OSHAWA STUDENTS D| Fi] EAT PETERBORO CL. 12-0 EXHIBIT ION GAME Oshawa Squad Register 2 Touchdowns in First Halt | SPORT SNAPSHOTS Before a crowd of well over five hundred people although the mer- cur; ranged around forty degree fahrenheit, Oshawa Collegiate In- stitute rugbyists defeated Peterboro Collegiate by a 12 to 0 score in a decidedly exciting exhibition game played in James Stevenson Park, Peterboro, yesterday afternoon. Ex- cept for a trifle advantage in weight and ball carrying shown by the win- ners, the teams were most evenly matched and after Oshawa had an- nexed two touchdowns in the frist half, the game developed into just as nip and tuck an affair as could ever be desired, especially in an ex- hibition game. Bill Gummow, captain and newly found half back on the O.C.I. team, continued his record of having scored a touchdown in every game which he has participated in this year when he scored Oshawa's first five points | of the game after a twenty yard run in the first three minutes of play. This brings his total of touch- downs for the season un to five in three games. Oshawa's second touch- down was scored on the very first play in the second quarter when "Hank" Deyman blocked a Peter- boro kick from their twenty yard line, the ball being picked up by Gord. Young who carried iy across the line for an unexpected score. The remaining two points came through rouges in the third and last quarters, both off Gord. Young's educated toe. With Oshawa taking the kick-off in the first period and advancing the ball almost two-thirds up the field gefore they even once lost pos- session, it seemed at first that the game would develop into a rather easy disposal for the Motor City clan, all the more so when Bill | Gummow crashed over the line for his touchdown Ontario eleven at Broome. doing quite well. despatch. Following 'the touchdown which was unconverted, the Quaker men took a hand in the proceedings and for several exciting minutes, made the going extremely hot for the Oshawa meén until they finally were forced to kick to ease the tension for the visitors. With the teams changing positions for the second quarter, on Peter- boro's opening play, as mentioned above, "Hank" Deyman broke through their formation to block a gkick which rebounded towards the Peterboro touch line and which was nicked up by Gord, Young and car- ried over for Oshawa's' second and last touch, This, like the first, wasn't converted, Cutler this time making the attempt, Young attempted the first, Play ranged from one end of the field to the other for the remainder of the period and plenty of kicking, several fumbles and some good broken field running were all mixed into it. Hubbell made one particul- arly good run in returning a kick at this time while some good play was also seen from Deyman and Bondurant, By virtue of better all ly being driven back although their loss of ground was hardly notice- able until Oshawa secured posses- sion on fumble and selves about thirty yards out from the homesters' line. One of the more brilliant of the local team's drives were seen at the very opening of the period when Carver, Gummow, Cutler, Deyman, Hubbell and Bondurant, in that order, suc- ceeded in making yards three times in snccession and in finally placing the ball of Peterboro's five yard line where however three more plays failed the reap the desired touch- down, owing to another of Peter- Peterboro's determined repulses, At the very end of the Oshawa's twelfth point came into being when Peterboro kicked to Baird who passed to Young after a short run who in turn kicked back into Peterboro territory.
