In the month con- cluded Monday, 161 new names were added to the membership lists and of this number 111 were adults, The remaining 50 were juveniles, In September but 83 new names were enrolled. The total eirculation for October was 6,463 of which 5,229 was adult and 1.234 juvenile. In the various departments fiction, as it always does, led ard in the adult depart- ment 4,635 books were loaned from the fiction shelves, while the re- mainder, 594, were non fiction. The juvenile membership also coneen- trated on fiction, loaning 849 books of this class. Non fiction circulation in the junior section of the institu- tion wag 385. She said Balchen had agreed to be pilot and navigator, while Brice Goldshorrough would probably remain as wireless operator. 14 YOUNG HAMILTON GIRLS DISAPPEAR Hamilton, ont, t., Nov. 2.--Follow- ing rumors of a narecotiz drug ring and white slaves being active in this district, police records today disciv- sed the startling fact that fourteen voung girls have been reported miss ing from their homes in this eity since last June. It is believed a uum ber of them were lured away by promises of a stage career. Local police and provincial officers aie trying to locate the girls. Four oth- ers were found at the border a month ago, while a few days ago a young girl was found in a Chinese cafe at Port Colborne. The truck was backing up to the lumber warehouse of the Gale and Trick firm for a load of lumber when it was struck by an electric work car, which was going north on tha most easterly track, mear the warehouse. The total for the preceding month was 3,028. North Simcoe public school has the worst crowding problem in the city now that conditions in the south end schools have been remedied by temporary arrangements until sueh time as the new rooms are compe. ted. Trustees recall that a few years ago they were sharply criticised for bulding the North Simcoe school yet events have justified their judge- ment and many are frank to admit that they built better than they knew. Justice Siddons ordered a mis- trial after defense and Government Attorneys had agreed a fair trial would he impossible with the pres- ent jury, The grand jury already has before it an affadavit submitted by the Government to hack up its charges with the district Attorney's office pressing for action, Justice Siddons told the jurors they were discharged not only from this trial but also from amv further attendance in his court, No immediate action was taken concerning Edward Kidwell, juror, whose alleged talking had a part in the decision to declare a mistrial, Within an hour after the mistrial had been directed Edward Kidwell, juror charged by Government coun- sel, went before the Grand Jury for questioning, He declared afterwards he said he told the truth, and made a sweeping denial of the charges he had talked bout the case or men- tioned he expected to get an auto- mobile, Other jurors were clated for anestioning while Kidwell was to re- tun later this afternoon. Meanwhile Fall issued a statement saving he had nothing to do with hi*'ne detectivse to shadow the jurors. TRAFFIC VIOLATORS HAILED T0 COURT Another grist of traffic cases have heen disposed of by the local magis- trates during the past few days. The offenders were convicted of most of the varied offences against the High- way Traffic Act and the local bylaws, from not obeying the "Stop" signals to reckless driving, and the fines im- r~sed ranged from $1 up, according to the nature of the offence. These charges are a result of the campaign being waged by the local department against the careless and thuoghtless automobile drivers, and nobody escapes the eagle eye of the officers if their number can be obtained. His whereabouts are unknown and both county and provincial police are scouring the town and outlying district, Centres in the immediate vieinity have been notified. Bright, who is a married man and who it is said comes from Cobourg, was arrested two weeks ago at Pie- kering for the offence alleged to have been committed at Cherrywood. He is also allezed to have stolen some harness. Bright was to have appear- ed at the coming assize court. After arising and going through the mnsual morning routine at the jail he was placed at a task of scrubbing in one of the jail corridors. He was under the supervision nf a guard. While the latter's attention was attracted for a few moments to something else, Bright, it is be- lieved slipped away and made good his escape through the jail door. Nov. 2--Workmen for the Dickie Construction Company, which is erecting a broadcasting sta- tion here by the lake for Gooderman and Worts, were much surprised to- cay to find in the lake the tripod of the transit which was stolen from the construction office here between Sat- urday afternoon and Monday morn- mg. The find makes it appear to some as though the taking of the $350 sur vey'ng instrument was merely a pre Hallowe'en prank of thoughtless young people. The tripod when found had | one leg broken. Jt was formerly thought by Mr. Sword, foreman of construction work, that the instrument was taken by tramps who would tn) to sell it to a fence pawnbroker. When Mr. Sword arrived at the of- fice on Monday morning he found tic door torm off the hinges. and the transit missing. The box, however, for carrying the instrument, had not been taken. GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE Charged with criminal negligence, Burney Gibson was convicted and let out on suspended sentence when ke smueared before Magistrate J. E. Willis in police court this morn- ing.
