Mr. Webster was born at Thorn- ton's Corners and was the key stone vesldent of that community, His family were pioneer settlers of the place, having come there from York- shire, England, over 75 years ago. Although he led a quiet, unassuming life, and was never a candidate for political or other public honors, Mr. Webster was one of the most wide- ly known residents of the township and was respected hy all, For about 18 years the deceased taught school in Cedardale School, Oshawa, and then conducted a store in Thornton's Corners. Another clause of the new code provides punishment for attempted suicide. This is aimed at the youth of both sexes, who seek to get cheap notoriety by swallowing just enough ink or iodine to justify their admis- sion to a city hospital and vigorous application of a stomach pump. Last Summer Rome averaged four or five such cases daily. Girls, especi- ally, took to swallowing ink because their mothers objected to their coming home late or their fathers did not like their transparent stock- ings. The code as drawn up by Signor Rocco also will revive an ancient #lJaw under which certain classes of debtors will be liable to imprison- ment. Members of the Revisional Committee, which must pass on the Minister's work, are not agreed about this feature, and it may be dronped before the code goes into effect.
