(74¢) Nan 7b FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCT. 970 1 ' ! (Continued, from page 9) = ., to over §4. It simply means that EVERY citizen of Oshawa and the province contributed this sum into the large bonfire. That citizens alone can remedy the situation stands out in the fact that Jast year eighty-three per cent. of the total loss from fire was 'caus- ed in places where people are oc- cupants. Of the total number of ires in 1926, 9,660 occurred in wellings, stores, farm barns and factories and the total loss from these places alone was $10,430- £30. Methods by which fires in the homes and factories can be elimin- ated are laid down by tha fire mar- shall's department. Among the sug- gestions advanced are: That of all places in the home and factory, the furnace or the boiler room should be absolute'y free from any accumulations of combustible refuse--the acme of order and cleanliness. That the attic, cellar, closets, yards and outbuildings should be cleaned at least twice a year, and all useless material removed or Lurped. That ashes should not be allow- ed to accumulate around the furn- ace and never pile them against wood. That smoking in bed, putting a lighted pipe in a coat pocket, or leaving the lighted pipe or cigar- eite stub lying around the house are extremely dangerous practices, That a lighted match, cigar or cigarette butt should never be thrown in a waste paper basket. That oily waste and oil soaked rags should be kept in a metal con- tainer. That stove and furnace pipes should be cleaned before lighting the fires for the winter months. That matches should be kept in a metal receptacle and out of the reach of children. Help Wanted--Female WANTED--MAID FOR GENERAL housework. Conferences between Mayor Williams and partnts failed to bring peace, The same result was reached in the conference between the May- or and Superintendent William A. Wirt, In a vote to determine their attitude for the day, the strikers reiteraed their demands that negro pupils be removed from the school, and, in addition, insisted that all strikers be allowed to return to school without penalty for their ab- sence. While parades through the down- town streets, mass meetings and hundeds of signs have called at- tention to he srike, there has been no rowdyism and no attacks have bean made on the negro pupils, Gary has a negro population of 15,000, NEW REGULATION GOVERNS IMPORTATION OF ALFALFA Ottawa, Sept. 28---Regulations under the Seeds Act have been amended to prohibit the importa- tion into Canada of alfalfa seed, or any mixtnre of seed containing 10 per cent or more of alfalfa seed, unless 10 per cent of the seed in. each container is colored red.
