The leaping flames and their re- lection from the waters of the lake lit up a scene of indescribable horror. The children who their way to safety from the blazing bullding huddled in the circle of made ight and heard the screams of hoge trapped in the flames. There was nothing that could be done to help, as the furious heat prevent- ed any attempt to enter the mission and soon the structure was a mass of 'smoking ruins, It is understood that all the chile (ren at the mission were Indians, but their names were not obtained. Effort to Get Information Government officials and tele. . graph companies put forth every ef- fort to get additional information of the tragedy teday, but few de- tails were received. The Beauval Mission is in charge of Father La Jaunese of the Oblate Fathers, who is assited by Father Ancel and Father Adam, eight brothers of the order and eight sis- ters of the Grey Nuns order, The mission Is one of the oldest in the North, The buildings were of lumber construction, heated on the hot air principle and the in- stitution operated its own power and light plant, The fire was the third to occur within the last few years. Dr. A, Amyot of Regina, who had gone to Isle Lacrosse, 60 miles north of Lac la Plonge, to open a new Grey Nuns hospital at that place, has hastened to the mission by aero- plane, Official Visit to School Hon, J. M. Uhrich, Minister of Health for Saskatchewan, and Dr, M. M, Seymour, Deputy Minister, returned only last week from visit- ing the school at Beauval. They at- tended to the vaccination and in- oculation of the children. Dr, Uhrich describes the school as a large frame building. It was a Federal Government institution under the administration of the Grey Nuns, Beauval, Dr. Uhrich said, is the principal centre in the North Coun- try of the Oblate mission, and be- sides the school there is a farm with several large farm buildings. It is centred in the midst of bush country, and the mission has a clear- ing of about 140 acres. Eleven mis- sionaries make Beauval their head- quarters. ! Indian children from all of the North Country school there. Dr, Uhrich declared the school had done fine work among its pupils, and he was inex- pressibly shocked at the news of the disaster. SLAVERY ENDS IN SIERRA LEONE London, Sept. 21--An ordinance formally abolishing the legal status of slavery will be introduced tomor- row in the Legislative Council of Sierra Leone Protectorate. As the Government has a majority on the Couneil, it will be passed, thereby freeing 220,000 slaves. The Council at the instance of the Government of Sierra Leone passed an ordinance last year designed to remove the last vestige of reecogni- tion of the status of glavery. Sub- sequent action by two slave owners récapturing runaway slaves led to their prosecution and conviction, but on appeal to the Sierra Leone Supreme Court the conviction was quashed. This decision is the cause of the action to be taken tomor- TOW. & practically attend
