(57-59-61) WARDEN SAYS HE * CANNOT SUPPORT ~-{€ontinued from page 7) one membér of the Soclety asked the Warden whether or not the So- ciety could feel assured that the new. official would get the heartiest support of the County Council the representative stated that he could not answer the question because he did not know. Asked as to the 'rdason, he stafed simply because the official has not had any experi- ence. Warden Jackson when asked if he had any amendment to offer to the motion making the recommen- dation appointing Mr. Alger, said he had not, The county's represen- tative drew attention to the fact that he was only one among twenty. He added, however, that if he would have made an amendment he would recommend the appointment of Col. Bick. He drew attention to the latter's military training and ex- perience, which in the wardens opinion would go a long way to qualify him for a position such as that of superintendent of the So- ciety. _ The question waa re-opened when the chairman read a personal let- ter from J, J. Kelso, chief of the department governing Childrens' A%d Societies, in which the latter urged that an effort be made to bring the county and the Society to- ward some agreement by which the 'work could go on amicably, In a personal letter to Warden Jackson, Mr. Kelso also urged that this be done. The latter according to Warden Jackson, stated he hecame aware of the situation thru informa- tion gleaned from an evening news- paper. ' Order-In-Council Needed It was also divulged at last night's meeting that the new appointee af- ter heing recommended by the spe- cial committee of the Society went to Toronto where he was given de- tailed information by department officials along the work which he would have to do, However, hefore Mr. Alger can commence active work his appointment will have to he ratified by an order-in-council. !He is to receive a salary of $1,600 plus the government grant. Warden Jackson complimented the Society upon the work which it has been doing and stated that it has been of the very highest or- der. While he has only heen a member of the organization for a short time, he claimed he has al- vs heen interested in the welfare oi the Society, Other members urged that some definite action be taken so that an official might be appointed at an early date. Dr. McDougall spoke briefly of the situation and stated that he was of the opinion that Mr, Alger was a very compptent man for the posi- tion. He referred to the fact that the new appointee was a local and well known man. Other members spoke very highly of the appoint- ment and when the vote was taken it was almost unanimous. Warden Jackson, however, refused to sup- port the motion. Other business transacted was mostly routine. Interest in the meeting was very keen and there were over twenty persons present. POLAND TO SUBMIT ARBITRATION PLAN Warsaw, Sept. 9.--An communique admits that Poland is planning to submit to the. League of Nations Assembly a plan by which nations would pledge them- selves to outlaw war and settle their differences by arbitration. Officials told the United Press that though the Government would li to see all members accept it, it would be satisfactory if only a portion adopted it, apparently mean- ing that a group-agreement finclud- ing Poland's neighbors, would ful- fil the Polish desires.
