On my return to Oshawa, to- day, I was informed by various eciti- zens of the Town, as well as by members of the City Council that the purpose of tonight's City Council Meeting was to pass a Resolution, or a By-Law providing for the paving of Warren Avenue and Gladstone Avenue North of the limite for pave- ment already provided for, and across and North of the old Toron- to and Eastern Railway tracks and continuing North through the lands belonging to Mayor R. D. Preston and his partner. While there may have been some justification for the paving of the above named Streets up to the Southern limit of the To- ronto and Eastern Railway Com- pany's lands, there cannot be any justification for paving them further North through the land# of real es- tate speculators. May I call your attention to the fact that there are many Streets in the City of Oshawa wholly built upon, and with houses of substantial nature erected thereon, which have heen refuse pavement this year. Cedardale and the South East Ward have receiv- ed nothing. Streets, such as, Athol Street and Arthur Street" Bast to the Ritson Road, and which are a credit to the working men of this City were refused pavement this vear, and they have not a single lot from Ritson Road to their Eastern limit which are not built upon, and in a majority of cases the buildings have heen erected for a number of years, I wish to protest against the ex- ploitation of the City of Oshawa by speculators in real estate, and also to protest against the giving to the Mayor, or any member of this Coun- cil any special privileges in connec- tion with their real estate holdings which have been refused to other residents of the City. The opening of farm lands for private gain by either citizens of the Town or by the Mayor or mem- bers of this Council is not to be de- precated, but there is no reason why the City Council should assist these men to the detriment of the citizens owning lands upon Streets, already largely built upon, and paying heavy taxes. In addition to this, T submit to you, and to the members of the City Council, that the Meeting of tonight has been illegally called, and that the Mayor can oly call "Special" meetings of the City Council for "Special" business, and that the na- ture of the business must be upon the notices sent to its various mem- bers.
