J. E. Brownlee; Premier of Alberta, who, with Mrs. Brownlee, ar- rived on the White Star Miner Regina after a six weeks' business trip in Great Britain, "One of our serious problems in Canada in the future it seems to me, will be the maintenance of a steady flow of British settlers." In Ontario the output dropped to 97.511 tons from 105,514 tons in June. DEAD ENGINEER BLAMED FOR CHAMONIX WRECK Paris, Aug. 28.--A Havas despatch from Chamonix says that an inquiry has placed the blame for the wreck of a Mountain Railway train there Wednesday upon the dead engineer, who opened the steam regulator on a decline, causing the train to gain fast speed before being derailed and plunging into a ravine. Twenty-one persons were killed. TARA FLOWER SHOW Tara, Ont., Aug. 26.--The fourth an- nual flower show of the Tara Horti- cultural Society was held in the Town Hall here vesterday afternoon and ev- ening. The display of flowers was not quite as good as in former years, but in certain varieties the showing was well up to the average. Gladiol ex- hibits were exceptionally good. TRIE OF DETRONT (Continued ed from page 7) jobs of piloting and navigating. It would have been impossible to sleep even if one of us had wanted to-- the storm was too violent. With the wane of the night, however, the weather moderated, but clouds and mist persisted. That is why we nev- er saw Ireland. "We had to go up 4,600 feet, with the result that the first land we sighted was Devonshire. And you bet we were glad to see it," "Why, we could have gone right on 'to Munich," said Brock with en- thusiasm, The fliers added that their com- passes worked perfectly through- out, "But look at their chart," broke in Kincade with a laugh. "It's only a common school geography map of the 'North Atlantic 'and England. That shows some navigating." The mechanic was confident the 'fliers would have no engine trouble on their trip, "They only expect a total of 250 flying hours at the most, and she is good for much more than that," he said. Schlee, although admitting one of the hardest stretches of the trip had been accomplished and the longes except the Pacific hop, told the correspondent that he and Brock ex- pected to face some very trouble- some weather in crossing India at this time of the year." "We had expected to go east via Russia," he explained, "but the dif- ficulties of securing supplies there and the present political situation make it inadvisable. The Indian route makes the trig longer and harder," Little Time to Eat, The fliers had little time to eat much on their trans-Atlantic flight, which is the first non-stop air jour- ney by plane from America to Eng- land, "Bill ate half a ham sandwich when he saw the British Isles," said Schlee. "I had a cheese sandwich, half a ham sandwich and two or- anges. I tried the coffee, but it was too cold." When the Pride of Detroit reached Croydon it carried on the vertical rudder the penciled signatures of a number of admirers and well wish- es, including many women from De- troit to Harbor Grace. It had not been here long before similar deco- rations were added. Two German airmen penciled greetings to their fellow aviators in German. Detroit, Aug. 28.--(AP)--"It's the greatest birthday present my husband could give me," Mrs. Wil- liam 8. Brock, wife of the pilot of the Pride of Detroit, said today upon | learning of the safe arrival at Croy- don, England, of her husband and | Edward F. Schlee. *Of course, we were certain they would get there safely," she added. Today was Mrs. Brock's birthday. Mrs. Schlee, constituting the oth- er half og "we" said: "I'm simply overjuyed." She expressed confi- dence that her husband and Brock would complete their flight around the world successfully. Both wom- en were informed of the successful landing in England this morning af- ter maintaining an all-night-vigil. No Speed Records in 1927. New York, Au. 28.--Contrary to the belief of most newspaper read- ers, non-stop airplane flights across the Atlantic not only have failed to hang up any speed records in 1927, but actually have fallen short of the mark set eight years ago by the first plane to blaze this trail. A comparison of times and distances in this field follows: 1919---~Hawker and Grieve, from St. John's, Newfoundland, 1,100 miles to a forced landing off the Irish coast in fourteen and a half hours; average speed, 75.8 miles an hour. 1919--Alcock and Brown, from St, John's, Newfoundland, to Clif- den, Ireland, 1,960 miles in sixteen and one-fifth hours; average speed, 120.9 miles an hour. 1927--Lindbergh, from Roosevelt Field, L.1., to Paris, France, 3610 miles in thirty-three and a half hours; average speed, 107.7 miles an hour. Chamberlin, from Roosevelt Field, L. I., to Plymouth. England (the last point sighted before the Columbia fost herself for an erratic night of wandering through the clouds to- ward Germany), 3.425 miles, in 34 hours; average speed 100.7 miles an hour. Byrd, from Roosevelt Field to Brest, France, (when the America lost herself in the clouds), 3,524 miles im thirty-three and a half hours; average speed, 105.2 miles an hour. Brock and Schiee, from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, to Plymouth, England, (first sighted before being lost. three hours over English coun- tryside), 2150 miles in nineteen and a third hours; average speed 111.4 miles an hour. Landed four and a half heurs later at Croydon Field, London, 200 miles distant; total time twenty-three and a third hours, reducing average miles per hour for emtire to 1066. SPAN: ATLANTIC Apply (evenings) ; Warden Brown" 89 Ritson Road 8, Man and Woiiais Found Dead, Were Victims of A Gambler's Feud Detroit, Aug. 28.--Two more names were added to the list of victims of a gamblers' war which has continued in- termittently here for the last fourteen months, The bodies of the man and woman found Friday night huddled under a blanket in the back of an auto- mobile were identified as those of Les- ter A, McCaul and his wife Clara. Both had been shot in the head. Police catalogue McCall as a gam- bler and believe that his death and that of his wife was an act of revenge for a gun battle last Tuesday in which another gambler and an innocent by- stander were shot. Enmity between the gambling factions resulted, the po- lice believe, from a wire-tapping con- spiracy two years ago,in which a Dan- ish baron lost $55,000 in Cuba, MOTHERWELL SEES 400-MILLION CROP Port Arthur, Aug. 28.--That, if weather conditions continue favor- able for the next ten days, the West will have a crop of 400,000,000 bushels, was the statement made this evening by Hon. W. R., Mother- well, Dominion Minister of Agricul- ture, who is attending a dinner given at the Prince Arthur Hotel this evening in honor of the dele- gates to the World's Poultry Con- gress, who spent a few hours here on their return from a trip to the Pacific Coast. "We in the West," Motherwell, who has a farm at Abernethy, Sask. 'will 'avd a bumper crop, if the frost keeps off for a few days." said Mr. SOUTH BRUCE PLOWMEN Teeswater, Ont., Aug. 28.--At a spe- cial meeting of the South Bruce Plow- men's Association last night it was finally decided that the match would again be held in the vicinity of Tees- water. The date was provisionally set for Tuesday, October 18.
