The French Gov- ernment has declared the day of the parade--September 19--a national holiday. Communists say they will spoil the day. They are ordering the working classes and their members in the ar- my to refuse to observe the holiday. The Socialist organ, Quotidien, said today: "After the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti this Franco-American fete is impossible." Soir made a similar declaration. Hurricane 'Sweeps Nova Sco- tia--Damage Reported to Be Heavy Ja) Halifax, N.S., Aug. 25--Eight lives were wiped out, four men are missing and feared drowned and material dam- age conservatively estimated at more than $1,000,000 was done crops, high- ways and shipping by the hurricane- like wind and rainstorm that held Nova Scotia from €ape Sable to Cape North solidly in its grip throughout last night and the early hours of this morning. Dozens of small craft, pleasyre yachts, motor boats and small fishing vessels were dashed to kindling wood when hurled by the angry sea against the rochbound coasts. At Sydney a large warchouse was ripped from its foundations on one wharf and hurled by the 60-mile gale a distance of 50 feet against a structure on a neighbor- ing wharf, A large vessel was sunk at Gabarus, Cape Breton, with a loss of four lives. Two vessels were landed high and dry in Halifax Harbor, : Crops Hard Hit 2 The crops throughout the Province suffered to an extent that will be un- known for several days. Professor Saxby Blair of the Dominion Experi- mental Farm, Kentville, estimated the damage to the apple crop at from 15 to 25 per cent, this entailing a loss of about 40,000 barrels, The hay and other field crops in many other sec- tions tonight were reported as under eight feet of water. Hon. Percy C. Black, Minister of Highways, while de- clining to place any figures on the total damage throughout the Province, de- clared that in Annapolis County alone the loss would amount to over $150,- 000. Twenty-five bridges were washed away in King's County, The railway systems throughout the Province suffered very heavily. The Dominiion Atlantic Railway reported 22 washouts between Halifax and Yar- mouth, Father and Son Lost With the discovery of their badly battered boat on the rocks at Dighy no hoper was held out for the safety of Warren Ossinger and his son, Ken- neth, who were on the fishing grounds vesterday when the storm reached that vicinity, and were swamped by heeavy seas before they could make shore. Stafford Rice was also believed lost when long after the gale was over no sign could be seen of the boat he was operating. Unknown Schooner Sinks No details haye been received of the four deaths which are reported to have More than a score of small boats are known to have sunk off Cape Breton. Sixteen fishing vessels went down in Louisburg Harbor, while five others either sank or went ashore at North Sydney. The schooner Ella Deveaux sank at its wharf in Sydney Harbor, and several yachts foundered or went aground at Baddeck. i The coast along Digby County also was a scene of havoc. All the fishing baots sailing out of Tiverton were for- ced to abandon their gear, ane one yacht, owned by James Merkel of Dig- by, driited ashore and became a total wreck. Halifax in Path ; Halifax City and Harbor received the full force of the tempest. The schooners ' J. C. Weston of Calais, Maine, and Clementia of Halifax piled up on the shore, and the four-masted vessel Veronica dragged her anchors and crashed into the schooner W. H. Eastwood. Fourteen or more motor boats were smashed into matchwood. Uprooted trees, broken windows and debris throughout the city bore testi- mony this morning to the strength of the wind. A travelling circus, which was parked on the commons, was wrecked, but the most serious result of the storm here, aside from the dam- age sustained by shipping, was the col- lapse of the huge steel crane at Pier 9. Fortunately, no one was mm its path when the massive structure tumbled over. Train Service g : Train service over both the Canadian National Railway and Dominion At- jantic Railway Systems was in most cases greatly impeded, and in many wholly paralyzed, due to numerous rashouts. eo acandland and Prince Edward Island were cut off from communica- tion with Halifax until around noon today. Cape Breton refnained isolated from here until shortly before 3 o'clock. im Charlottetown, PEL, Aug. 25--Great damage, the total of which cannot be estimated yet, was dome to fruit trees and field crops throughout Prince Edward Island yesterday during the heavy rain and wind storm which swept the Province t the day. The total rainfall was 208 inches. The velocity of the wind was 78 miles an hour. Several buildings were blown down, trees uprooted, telephone and telegraph services were disrupted. y May Be Lose Boston, Mass., Aug, 25.--Fear for the safety of hundreds of small fishing sloops huddled off George Banks, 175 miles off Cape Cod, during yesterday's storm was expressed by Captain John T. Hayes of the steam grander Harvard, which crept into pont 'tonight with one dead and three injured among her crew. . occurred when an unknown schooner | was wrecked at Garabus, Cape Breton. ! He is already committed for trial on counts of cattle stealing. The Crown Attorney requested an adjournment and when defence counsel objected, announced the charge would be withdrawn and re- laid at some future date, stating the police would forge several im- portant links in the chain of evid- ence within the next few days. W. J. McOULLY TREASURER OF W, ONTARIO CONSERVATIVES Stratford, Ont., Aug. 24--Word has been received in the city of the appointment of W. J, McCully as treasurer of the Liberal-Conserva- tive Association of Western Ontario.
