A. Richardson, counsel for McEwen, was prepared with the bail, but Magistrate Jeffs pointed out that McDermott had not yet had his hearing and might not be committed. Under those circum- stances the Court could not see how McEwen could be bound over to give evidence against MeDermott at that stage. Replying to the court, the Crown Attorney reiterated that he intend- ed to withdraw the charges against McEwen for the reason stated, The Court said the Crown must take the responsibility, Then W. A. Boys, .C., counsel for McDermott, proposed that the charges against his client he drop- ped also, and that he be bound over to give evidence. Mr. Boys termed the binding over of McEwen for the purpose pmamed "a highly suspicious proposition," and asked the court if it $s not obtaining a statement fron 2 man by hope of reward. replied. Charges Against McDermott The charges at present Jaid against McDermott are Barjury, re- ceiving stolen goods amd theft of cattle. Other serious charges are ex- pected to be added om Monday. Langley's bail was reduced from $10,000 to two sureties of $2,500 each. Aug. 19.-- More than 5,000 'firemen of New York State and nearby Canadian towns and cities marched in the annual parade of the New York State Firemen's Association and the Western New York Volunteer Firemen's Association held here in connection with the conventions of the two organizations. The Cana- dian firemen participated in the parade as guests of the two U.S. bodies, In the competition drills, the Chemical Hose Company of Leroy won first prize which carries with it the state championship. SIX LA TUQUE MEN SENTENCED TO JAIL Quebee, Aug. 19.--S8ix residents of La Tuque were each sentenced to one month in jail without the option of a fine, the costs of the case, or another three months when found guilty of illegally sell liguor, Four of them pleaded guilty, while cases were established against the other two by Quebee Liguor Commission officials: The men were: John Lavoie, Jos.
