'est Much Reduced This past week has been a busy one on the farms all over the Prov- ince. Generally speaking, the wea- and the crops to be handled have heen heavy. In some cases second crop Alfalfa yielded = about as much hay as the first crop, Alfalfa seed, howeyer, will be scarce. On- tario has harvested the best hay crop in years. Fall wheat thresh- heavy as. expected, selling at $1.25 to $1.80, Apple growers have re- ceived another severe blow, or- chards all over the Proyince being attacked 'by aphis. tunate in view of the unfavorable experience of fruit growers last year from a different cause. Corn seems to be making better growth. Con- siderable attention is being given to the weed problem and much plowing has been done with the ob- ject in view of destroying weeds. The campaign against weeds is re- sulting in much work being done not only in the fields but on the roadsides and waste places, Algoma--Haying is practically completed under very fayorable con- ditions. Farmers report a good crop. Some plowing has heen done for fall wheat, but the ground Is very dry and difficult to work, Brant--Those who had Alfalfa fields have excellent second cut, Sup- plies of milk for local supply are be- ing fairly well maintained but there .seems to be a fairly keen demand for dairy cows. Most threshing out- fits are busy on Aliske. There does not seem to be as much demand for help. Dufferin--=Generally the hay crop has not heen better for many years. The wheat, rye and barley promise a very fair yield. Oats are filling well and will give a very large yield. There is a slight appearance of blight on the oats but will not affect the yield more than 15 per cent in the worst appearing fields. Both oats and mixed grain will give an exceedingly high yield this year if the weather continues favorable for the next week or ten days. Dundas--Splendid growth is tak- ing place on late fields of grain. Fields which a month ago appeared hopeless now promise a good deal. Corn is making rapid growth but much of it cannot hope to reach maturity, Durham--Plowing for Fall wheat is fairly general and many weeds have been killed this past week with eultivation. Frontenac--Vegetable growers re- sport that the prices have heen very satisfactory for all kinds of veget- ables. Potatoes are selling ay $1.50 per bushel. The supply of small fruits seems to be practically over. Insect pests seem to be yery much more prevalent this year. Aphis have been extremely troublesome. The tomato stock borer has also affected about 20 per cent of the crop. Grey--During the past two weeks at least 2 carloads of Agricultural heavy horses have been shipped out of the country. Prices are compa- ratively good. Hay all off. An ex- ceptionally heavy crop. Wheat all eut and a large percentage of the Barley cut or ready for cutting. Haldimand--Fall wheat and alis- ke are not yielding as large as the crop of straw would indicate, prob- ably due to dry hot weather at the time the seed was filling. Aliske is yielding 2 bushels per acre in some sections, and in others is not worth threshing. Halton--Entomologists this week discovered the Mexican Bean Beetle around Burlington and Oakville. This is the first year this pest has been found in Ontario. on grain crops this season. Ideal barvest weather has prevailed. Hay- ing and harvest are being carried on in unision this year. Huron--There is already quite a demand for feeders. A number of 'men have reported giving orders for carlots of feeding cattle for de- livery at almost amy time. Consid~ arable amounts of commercial feeds prices. Everywhere everyone speaks the poorest prospect. Lincoln--Peaches sold on the market at from 60c to 70c per 6 qt. basket, plums at 40c and pears at 50c. Middlesex--Potatoes are turning out a medium crop. Prices on mar- ket are $1.50 per bag. Peel---Alfalfa bloom continues to drop and many fields originally in- tended for seed are being cut for hay. Few fields will yield over '3 bushels per acre in contrast to 8, 10 and 12 bushels yields during the past few years. Simcoe South--Aliske yielding from 3to 6 bushels. Beekeepers are busy taking off the light honey and report from 25 to 50 per cent heavi- er yield than last year. . Temiskaming--More farmers are realizing the value of after harvest cultivation as a means of contrel of weeds and while visiting several parts of the District during the week, several farmers were either plowing or cultivating. A GAY DECEIVER The vicar of a small village said to a youth of his flock, "I'm afraid, William, you're tampering with the affections of seyeral girls in this parish. I'm told that you're courting a girl in this village an- other at Little Crompton, and a third at Muddington." "Well, sir," said William hap- pily, "I've got a motor-bike."
