Practising good cyber hygiene habits is done by removing sensitive infor- mation like location tags before posting things on- line. Asokan also advises minimizing the sensitive information people give away to service providers or making sure the visibil- ity of information is limit- ed. "For example, social networks may ask for your phone number or email ad- dress for account recovery purposes, but you can con- figure your profile so that they are not visible to any- one else but yourself," he said. Cyber hygiene can also mean "asking service pro- viders to wipe personal da- ta from their databases once you are done using their service." Also, be wary of applica- tions you download and in- stall. Some of these are mal- ware designed to spy on your online activities, but disguised as a legitimate application. Make it a habit to read reviews and infor- mation about an app before downloading and be care- ful with applications from sources you can't trust like those sold outside official app stores. "Be stingy about grant- ing permissions to apps, follow the 'principle of least privilege' and grant only the minimum set of permis- sions apps need to do the job you want them to do," he adds. "Ultimately, strong reg- ulation that limits service providers in their collec- tion, storage and use of per- sonal data is necessary. Other jurisdictions are al- ready doing it like the Eu- ropean GDPR. Canada has the Consumer Privacy Pro- tection Act in the works" NEWS Continued from page 6 Waterloo professor N.
