FIRST YEAR LEVELS During the "sixties" secondary schools in Ontario offered various programs and branches to our students. These courses met the needs uf many more students than did the one "academic" program offer- ed to students in the "forties" and "fifties". Now in the "seventies" educators are striving to meet further students' needs by offering levels with- in subject fields. In this system, a student may study one subject at a basic level and another sub- ject at a more advanced level. The basic level is designed for students who do not plan to study a particular. subject field beyond grade 12. The ma- terial covered tends to be more practical and less theoretical than that of the advanced level. The advanced level, involving more theory, prepares a student to take the subject in grade 13. This accommodates the student who has superior ability in some subjects but average or less than average in others . In September 1970 at Schreiber High School, two levels will be offered to first year students in the following subjects: English, French, Mathematics, and Science. All first year students will have common course material in the first six week of school. This will allow: for orientation to secon- dary school and for testing to be carried out in the different subjects. Then, as a result of the student's progress in elementary school, his achievement on these tests and his aspirations, he will pursue the level which best suits his needs and abilities. In. later terms, the student may change levels in these. subjects, if his progress warrants it.
