CRIMES OF NON-VIOLENCE COUNTERFEIT CHEQUES : . Investigations included - three reports were re- ceived of Wilful Damage, were investigated and settled without charges being laid; one alleged assault was investigated and settled without any charge being laid; one report of an abandoned auto was investigated and found to have been stolen from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Auto returned to owner; one complaint of a worthless cheque was investigated and the party responsible has been charged; one report of a break and enter of the Esso Bulk Plant is still under investigation; four complaints of Counterfeit Currency being passed were received and are still under investigation; two cameras, | movie and 1 box type were found and turned /in to this Detachment. Likewise, Government of Canada cheques have also been counterfeited, pdss- ed and not. discovered until they return to their respective Departments. During the past year, Officers of the Ontario Provincial Police Anti-Rackets Branch and the Met- tropolitan Toronto Police Fraud Squad, in conjunction with police departments across Canada, have been investigating this type of crime. While it is difficult to prevent the counterfeiting of cheque forms, it is not impossible to prevent the criminal element from cashing them. There are several precautions which citizens in all walks of life may take to prevent the forger from obtaining his objective. 1. IDENTIFICATION - If the passer is not personal- ly known, insist on several items of identification. If the cheque is already endorsed, have the passer sign it again in your presence. 2. DO NOT ASSUME - Skilled cheque passers often dress the part. A construction "hard hat" worn with work clothes does not necessarily mean what is being conveyed. The woman and child may not be what she seems. The old-age pensioner may be a ruse. The suave, well-dressed businessman could be a fake, as well as his cheque. 3. DELAY - Cheque passers like to work fast. Delay makes them nervous.
