Vol. 12 No. 31 STOKES' QUOTES ON OHSIP It is most regrettable that the Provincial Govern- ment is not going to use any of the estimated $175,000,000.00 to be received annually from the Federal Government under the Medicare Plan to reduce the present excessively high and regressive OMSIP premiums which will become standard throughout the province on October Ist. It is also clear that the government will not raise the inadequately low level at which people receive relief in whole or in part from payment of premiums. These levels have not been changed _ in three years while the cost of living has reduced the purchasing power of the $4,000.00 limit by more than 11%. | welcome the' crash program which the Minister announced to develop health resources which are so badly needed in Northern Ontario. The OHSIP rates effective October Ist, 1969 will be the highest in Canada, a single person will pay $70.80, couple $141.60 and family $177.00. ' In particular | welcome a better distribution of health personnel and alternative methods for the delivery of health services and geographic con- solidation. | think it is valid to suggest that the cost of travel or transportation of patients to medical centres should be covered under the Medicare plan. We happened to have our camera along on Sunday and snapped the two photos shown but black and white just doesn't do justice to either one of them. lt made us think, however, that nothing has been done to encourage this. We have prizes for the best decorated homes at Christmas. Why not a reward for the beauty Continued page 12 ......
